Phone UseYou will be able to use the telephone.However, you are only allowed tomake calls with staff permission andduring times you are not busy withactivities such as school or groupwork. The exception is if you need tocall the <strong>TJJD</strong> abuse hotline. You donot have to have staff permission tocall the hotline.Staff will give you permission to callyour parents, guardians, familymembers, and other approvedresponsible adults. You are givensome free long distance phone minutes each month at <strong>TJJD</strong>’s expense. Theagency does this to encourage you to seek family involvement in your treatmentprogram. Eligible youth may buy extra phone minutes or make collect calls tothose on an approved list. In emergencies, <strong>TJJD</strong> will help you contact yourfamily.Phone calls (other than to your lawyer) may be recorded and checked for illegalactivities. If you abuse phone privileges, <strong>TJJD</strong> may not let you use the phones.VisitationRegular visitation happens at least on the weekends. Sometimes, your facilitymight have visitation on a day during the week, too. If there is an emergency,your parents can make special arrangements to visit you.You are allowed to spend time with your family and others who have beenapproved for visitation because it is important to your success. Your parents willget a copy of your facility’s visitation rules. Visitation may be suspended forsomeone for breaking the rules. If there is an emergency on campus, visitationcould be suspended for everyone until it is safe.If your family can’t afford to visit you, <strong>TJJD</strong> volunteer groups can help. Yourparents should contact your facility’s community relations coordinator to find outdetails. The volunteers can help pay for gas, motels, and bus tickets.8
