Preserve evidence: If the assault has just happened and you have reported it, donot brush your teeth, change clothes, take a shower, or eat or drink anything.<strong>TJJD</strong> staff will get you to a doctor or nurse to examine you and preserve anyevidence that may still be on or in your body.Be safe: Reporting sexual assault or abuse is the fastest way <strong>TJJD</strong> can put astop to it so that you are safe and can begin to heal. It is a traumatic experience,but one from which you can recover with the right counseling and help. <strong>TJJD</strong> willprotect you and get you the help you need. Victims of sexual assault who waitedto tell often wish they said something sooner. Also, most abusers don’t have justone target. By reporting sexual abuse, you will be keeping others safe.Keep Healthy BoundariesYou can reduce your risk of being sexually abused or assaulted by keepinghealthy boundaries. Some sexual predators are good at what is called“grooming.” This is where they try to break down normal, healthy boundaries sothey can take advantage of you.• Don’t ask for or accept favors or gifts that are against the rules.• Do not have inappropriate conversations with other youth or staff.• Avoid anyone who is overly complimentary of you, tries to get you alone,or wants to share inappropriate secrets.• Report anyone who threatens you.• Report anyone who has a pattern of touching you too much (likehugging, hand holding, or pretending to accidentally brush up againstyou).• Report anyone who develops a pattern of looking at you in a way thatcauses you to feel uncomfortable.LOOKING AHEADTAKING RESPONSIBILITY & DEFINING YOUR FUTURE65
