MY PARENTS’ BILL OF RIGHTSWe talked about your rights. Now let’s look at the rights your parents have. Manyparents, youth, advocacy groups, and staff wrote this Parents’ Bill of Rights:“It’s healthy to keep in contact with your family. They can helpyou get through this.” – <strong>Youth</strong> B.M. (Gainesville State School)Parents are partners with correctional staff, educators, and treatment providers intheir child’s rehabilitation and shall be encouraged and assisted to activelyparticipate in the design and implementation of their child’s treatment, from intakethrough discharge. Parents of children 1 who have been committed to the care,custody, or control of the <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Juvenile</strong> <strong>Justice</strong> <strong>Department</strong> have the followingrights:1. As a parent, you have the right to know that you and your child will betreated fairly regardless of race, religion, national origin, language,economic status, disability, gender, sexual orientation, or age and thateach child will be treated as an individual.2. As a parent, you have the right to expect <strong>TJJD</strong> to provide a safe, secure,and sanitary environment for your child.3. As a parent, you have the right not to be judged, blamed or labeledbecause of your child’s incarceration.1 Children who are under the age of 18 years or are over 18 years and have signed a release ofconfidentiality authorizing TYC to share confidential information with their parents.
