Module 8: Community Awareness – voter registration; getting a driver’s licenseor ID card; getting insurance; selective service registration; <strong>TJJD</strong> parole; juvenilerecords; enrolling in and attending college or trade schoolWhile you are working on your modules, you will also need to do communityservice, get and keep a job, and save up the money you will need to move out.Completing Independent Living PreparationThis chart shows you the four things you must do to complete Independent LivingPreparation and be eligible for money from <strong>TJJD</strong> once you move out.Completing Independent Living Preparation1. You must pass all of the independent living modules with a score of 70or above on the quizzes.2. You must complete at least 60 hours of community service.3. You must maintain employment for at least 30 days.4. You must save enough money to pay your apartment and utilitydeposits and your first month’s rent.Independent Living Financial AidIf you finish Independent Living Preparation and have to live on your own, <strong>TJJD</strong>may be able to give you some money (for up to six months) until you can takecare of yourself. Ask your case manager or parole officer about the rules to getfinancial aid.It is important for you to know that if you get money from <strong>TJJD</strong> for rent, you areconsidered on intensive parole supervision. That means you have to let yourcase manager or parole officer in to your place to search for contraband whetheror not you are home. Also, in order to get money, you have to sign a contractwith <strong>TJJD</strong> that will list all of the rules.86
