If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shallbe thine."The diabolicalinclination to cause themselves tobe worshipped, is, in some measure, in all the proud,and is a stronger temptation than that of carnal pleasures.Herod, to satisfy his passion, hazarded, byhis foolish promise, no more than the half of hiskingdom ; but there are those who, like the devil,would give all they have to be worshipped. Whatcan be said of those women, who join in themselvesall the lasciviousness whereof the flesh is capable,and all the pride of the unclean spirit, but only thatsuch are monsters more to be dreaded than the devilhimself?" 8. And Jesus answered and said unto him. Getthee behind me, Satan : for it is written, Thou shaltworship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thouserve."One only God, one only religion. O my God,how little do we understand what it is to worshipthee only ! Men worship every thing which theylove, every thing wherein they place their happiness :and the number of those who love none but thee, andwho place their happiness in thee alone, is less thancan be imagined." 9.
