384 ST. LUKE.justice, for a criminal to turn his prison into ascene of delights, and lead the life of a Sardanapalus, whilst, at the same time, the sentence of his condemnationis preparing. A man who hurts andwrongs nobody, and lives in a constant succession ofpleasures, passes his life innocently, according to thenotion of abundance of people ; but is this the notionwhich is here given us by Christ ? They willcertainly perceive the contrary, but they will perceiveit too late, in that day of mourning and weepingwhich shall never have an end !''26. Woe unto you when all men shall speak wellof you ! for so did their fathers to the false prophets."A man might free himself from this enchantmentof riches, good cheer, and pleasures, did not flattery,as it were, shut the gate against his return. It isa very great misfortune for the rich and great to beexposed thereto : but it is a much greater for falseprophets, teachers, and spiritual directors to be praisedand honoured by the world; for it is a sign that theworld is pleased with them ; and a man cannot pleasethe' world, but at the expense of Christ and thegospel. A commerce of flattery betwixt the greatand their spiritual directors, is a source of infinite evilsand misfortunes. When they come to settle the account, the gain on both sides will be hell and eternaldamnation.Sect. IV.— The Love of 'Enemies. Patience. Wemiist lend, hoping for nothing again.27. II But I say unto you which hear, Love yourenemies, do good to them which hate you, 28.
