And it came to pass, as he went into thehouse of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread onthe sabbath-day, that they watched hira."Christ goes not into public company, except whenthere is some good to be done. The world takesnotice of every thing in ecclesiastical persons, and inthe great: this obliges them to a particular care inall their actions. How corrupt is the heart of man !This Pharisee, instead of opening his heart to thelight and grace offered him in this visit of our blessedSaviour, opens it only to malice and malicious suspicions.Hov/ should we be able of ourselves toprofit by the afflictions which God sends us, since,without the assistance of his grace, we abuse even themost engaging instances of his favour !" 2. And, behold, there was a certain man beforehim which had the dropsy."It issufficient sometimes that our miseries be onlyexposed to the eyes of mercy. Mercy is of a preventingnature, and, without staying for our solicitation,is disposed to do us good. The pride of man'sheart, which this dropsical person represents, stoodin great need of such a charitable physician as JesusChrist." 3.
