YPS Year Book 2012THE CHIEF GUEST’S SPEECH (EXCERPTS)“To begin with, I would like to say that it gives megreatest pleasure to be among the students ofYPS . The School is an integral part of Patiala,it issomething I feel very close to…my children werehere for their formative years and my grandchildren, and all the children of people of Patiala who are herewhom I consider as my children and grandchildren. Many things have been said .The little ones of theJunior School gave a delightful speech as was thevery good speech given by the Head Boy and theHead Girl……We were not very aware when we were yourage . You are much more empowered because thefacilities you have are much more than we had. Idon’t know whether it is good or bad because wehad a lot to look forward to. You have everything at avery young age , so you strive for excellence …And in this quest of gaining knowledge, a questioningmind and dialogue are very important. All our greatsaints, the people who founded our religions, thepeople who gave best to the world –they all hadquestions and then had dialogue and then came to aconclusion…so to build your temple of learning youalso must question and engage in dialogue and forthis I think there are four important pillars that youneed to have –first is learning to know, then learningto do, learning to live together …and that is what youare doing in YPS today-learning to live together, andshare technology…and the fourth pillar is that youhave to translate the values you have learnt – familyvalues, man and woman values , social values – andthe environmental values, which is a very importantvalue in this day and age because our survivaldepends on the environment… And one of the mostimportant things in this value is the awareness ofsocial cleanliness. We have a duty when we live insociety -to make sure that we are good in our civilways and it is on you, children ,to change the futurebecause you are young , you understand …andyou are empowered with the knowledge you getin school ……Even when life began , before any religion cameinto being , all our forefathers lived and worshippeddifferent natural phenomena …because their liveswere dependent on them ..on fire, rain and othernatural elements..We should treat them in the samemanner and look after this precious gift ……Do you know that you are very lucky that it is ourgeneration that has, actually, seen a photograph ofthe Earth from the Space ,given to us by NASA? Thisis the kind of progress we have made and this is whatwe have to preserve…The human mind is much more complex than thecomputers we use everyday. You have to developthis mind and put it to good use… It is learning thatempowers us ;it is the knowledge that is the greatestempowerment and this is what is going to makeus live with dignity , ambition for the future and ourhope…I would like to briefly touch on the many things thathave been happening around with women and thegreat youth outpouring in the support of women’srights…One of the students had mentioned in thespeech that you had gone to UN . I just want to tellyou that it was great privilege for me when I wentto the UN two years ago. I spoke on women there, and there was a Vote for making a new wing-the UNWomen. And you will be pleased to know that theIndian mission there made the greatest contributionto be able to pass the formation of this new wing…I spoke on it and the President of the GeneralAssembly asked me to come up on to the podiumand chair the Assembly to pass the bill. And I cantell you I had never done that before…But it gave megreat pleasure when I ,actually, banged the hammerdown and the bill was passed. ..With these words, I would like to thank everyoneand many congratulations and I look forward to seemany of you doing better and better in life..May Godbless you with happiness, health and long lives …16
