WWW.YPSPATIALA.INTHE PRINCIPAL’S SPEECH (EXCERPTS)“Your Excellency Honorable Maharani Preneet Kaurji, distinguished parents, guests, Old Yadavindrians, and my dear staff and students. On this, our 64thAnnual Academic Day Celebrations , we aredeeply honored and grateful to Maharani Sahiba, Honorable Minister of State for External Affairs,Government of India, for having taken timeout fromher busy schedule, especially when the BudgetSession is on, to grace the occasion. I am sure theprize winners would be especially delighted, and willalways cherish the memory of receiving their awardfrom your esteemed self……Her Excellency has been a great source of strengthto the School and has always been forthcoming intimes of its need, especially because of our increasedinteraction and global movement of our students.I begin my annual report with a report on staff matters. The School welcomed the new Vice Principal, MrsNishi Bhatnagar, who took over at the beginningof this session. Mrs. Mimi Bajpai ,our former Viceprincipal, was given a warm send- off as she retiredafter a pleasant and successful four year stint as theVice Principal of the School .We wish her the verybest in her retirement years…… The Year 2013 began on anextremely sad note with the suddenand untimely demise of one ofour dear colleagues andEconomicsteacher,Mr. Rakhal Mohan Sharma. An able teacher ,warm, friendly and affectionate by nature, loved andendeared to by peers and respected by students, Mr.Rakhal’s loss is irreparable for the YPS Communityand a void which will be difficult to fill. The school is on the anvil of embarking on majorinfrastructural revamp in the coming years TheBoard of Governors have generously sanctioned aRupees 10 crore project for the construction of anew Phulkian Boarding House building, with twonew dormitories, dining Hall and a state- of- the -artkitchen. The school hopes to have 50 % of the SeniorSchool students as boarders from the year 2014onwards. The wish list also includes a cricket pavilionwith a fitness gymnasium by the old students, a multipurposehall, new staff quarters, expanded schoolinfirmary, a new laundry, bakery, six –a-side astroturf hockey ground, a 10 meter shooting range etc.All these projects are imperative for YPS to retain itsposition as a premier institution in north India.I have had the privilege of being the Principal of thisesteemed institution, for the past five years sinceAugust, 2007… In 2007 one realized the need tobuild a positive culture, enthusiasm and creativityamongst the staff, students and parents and connectto our glorious past and traditions. An essentialfirst step was democratization and impartiality of itsadministration… identifying weak links, introducingconcepts, and practices, technology for learning, formath’s classes, English language laboratory, trainingteachers……At this juncture to the question where we are, wecan proudly claim that the school has an openenvironment, ‘Where the Mind is without Fear’,where technology is used by one and all, whereinteraction is abundant and the team spirit abounds…To this, I am grateful to the dedication and efforts ofmy academic staff …To the question where we wish to go…the aim isto transform the old education and to revert intoa more holistic approach of learning to treat eachchild as a unique individual with his own inherentnatural abilities and to develop it to the fullest usingall the available resources… The need of the hour, with increased violence against the weaker sex ,isto create and establish good moral values, gendersensitization, refinement in behavior, courtesyin language, pride in our culture and respect forelders. …We have the will and the momentum, and together, along with our children, we hope toachieve our goals and vision. In the end I am grateful to our entire team andcredit of all our achievements in all spheres goesto my dedicated academic staff and to the Bursarand his team and also to my dear children who arethe hub around which the entire school rotates. Iacknowledge with deep gratitude, constant supportof dear parents who have been always supportiveof every action the school has initiated. My specialthanks to Old Yadavindrians and AYOSA who havealways been very positive and supportive to theschool… In the end, nothing is achievable withoutthe unstinting support of the honorable membersof the Board of Governors and our Patron HisHighness Maharaja Amarinder Singh, to whom weare eternally grateful and without whose vision anddirections, the school would not have attained suchglory Thank you to one and all !”15
YPS Year Book 2012THE CHIEF GUEST’S SPEECH (EXCERPTS)“To begin with, I would like to say that it gives megreatest pleasure to be among the students ofYPS . The School is an integral part of Patiala,it issomething I feel very close to…my children werehere for their formative years and my grandchildren, and all the children of people of Patiala who are herewhom I consider as my children and grandchildren. Many things have been said .The little ones of theJunior School gave a delightful speech as was thevery good speech given by the Head Boy and theHead Girl……We were not very aware when we were yourage . You are much more empowered because thefacilities you have are much more than we had. Idon’t know whether it is good or bad because wehad a lot to look forward to. You have everything at avery young age , so you strive for excellence …And in this quest of gaining knowledge, a questioningmind and dialogue are very important. All our greatsaints, the people who founded our religions, thepeople who gave best to the world –they all hadquestions and then had dialogue and then came to aconclusion…so to build your temple of learning youalso must question and engage in dialogue and forthis I think there are four important pillars that youneed to have –first is learning to know, then learningto do, learning to live together …and that is what youare doing in YPS today-learning to live together, andshare technology…and the fourth pillar is that youhave to translate the values you have learnt – familyvalues, man and woman values , social values – andthe environmental values, which is a very importantvalue in this day and age because our survivaldepends on the environment… And one of the mostimportant things in this value is the awareness ofsocial cleanliness. We have a duty when we live insociety -to make sure that we are good in our civilways and it is on you, children ,to change the futurebecause you are young , you understand …andyou are empowered with the knowledge you getin school ……Even when life began , before any religion cameinto being , all our forefathers lived and worshippeddifferent natural phenomena …because their liveswere dependent on them ..on fire, rain and othernatural elements..We should treat them in the samemanner and look after this precious gift ……Do you know that you are very lucky that it is ourgeneration that has, actually, seen a photograph ofthe Earth from the Space ,given to us by NASA? Thisis the kind of progress we have made and this is whatwe have to preserve…The human mind is much more complex than thecomputers we use everyday. You have to developthis mind and put it to good use… It is learning thatempowers us ;it is the knowledge that is the greatestempowerment and this is what is going to makeus live with dignity , ambition for the future and ourhope…I would like to briefly touch on the many things thathave been happening around with women and thegreat youth outpouring in the support of women’srights…One of the students had mentioned in thespeech that you had gone to UN . I just want to tellyou that it was great privilege for me when I wentto the UN two years ago. I spoke on women there, and there was a Vote for making a new wing-the UNWomen. And you will be pleased to know that theIndian mission there made the greatest contributionto be able to pass the formation of this new wing…I spoke on it and the President of the GeneralAssembly asked me to come up on to the podiumand chair the Assembly to pass the bill. And I cantell you I had never done that before…But it gave megreat pleasure when I ,actually, banged the hammerdown and the bill was passed. ..With these words, I would like to thank everyoneand many congratulations and I look forward to seemany of you doing better and better in life..May Godbless you with happiness, health and long lives …16
