In fact, the onlystudy known, which is the Auburn Study, proves the 6 ounceaction devices and current pads do not harm the horse.Unscrupulous people sore horses, not pads and action devices.To say they should be banned because it motivates people tosore horses is like saying we should ban automobiles becausepeople speed or run stop signs. <strong>The</strong> Tennessee WalkingHorse Breeders’ & Exhibitors’ Association is 100% only forthe sound horse, and is against soring or harming horses inanyway. We are dedicated to the welfare and protection of ourgreat breed!”Lewisburg, TN - <strong>The</strong> Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders’ andExhibitors’ Association (TWHBEA) is proud to introducethe new Motivated Mares Program. This program, which isopen to all registered TWHBEA mares, mirrors the popularGO! Gelding Program. <strong>The</strong>re have been many requests for aprogram that recognizes mares participating in all disciplinesand TWHBEA is very pleased to offer this new opportunity formare owners the world over.<strong>The</strong> Motivated Mares Program is open to all registeredTWHBEA mares regardless of age. <strong>The</strong> mare owner/rider mustbe a current TWHBEA member in good standing to participate.Upon paying the annual nomination fee, the nominated mareis eligible to participate in any category of this program.<strong>The</strong> program is broken down into two award categories,Category I-<strong>The</strong> Motivated Mares Competition Division andCategory II-<strong>The</strong> Motivated Mares Super Mare Division. <strong>The</strong>Motivated Mares Competition Division is divided into fiveareas, performance, pleasure, versatility, endurance trail, andrecreational trail. Each division is further broken down intotwo age categories, Junior Mare (4 years & Under) and SeniorMare (5 years & Over). <strong>The</strong> Super Mare Division is dividedinto two awards, <strong>The</strong> Flatshod Super Mare of the Year Awardand <strong>The</strong> Performance Super Mare of the Year Award. Winnersof these divisions will be the horses with the most overallpoints in their discipline at year’s end. <strong>The</strong> Super Mare Awardswill be awarded to the Mares who were awarded the mostpoints during the year in their division.This program will run from year to year. Points willbegin accumulating beginning on November 1 of each yearrunning through October 31 of the next year. Points willbegin to accumulate after entry forms have been turned inand all nomination fees have been paid. <strong>The</strong> Motivated MaresProgram Points Log must be turned in by November 1 and willbe verified by TWHBEA. For shows that are not turned intoTWHBEA to be published as show records on IPeds, a classsheet signed by the show secretary verifying the placing, mustbe included with the Log Book. Points will be earned by theplacing of each mare in a judged competition with the onlyexception being the Recreational Trail division. Single judgeshows will be counted as single points, three judge showswill be counted as double point shows, and five judges willbe counted as triple point shows. <strong>The</strong> points in a single judgeshow will be awarded by 1st place 10 points, 2nd place 9points, etc. Recreational Trail mares must fill out the MotivatedMares Recreational Trail Log where for each 5 hours ofrecreational riding one point will be awarded, thus for 50 hoursof recreational riding (time in the saddle) the mare would earn10 points. A detailed Log must be kept naming place, time anddistance ridden.<strong>The</strong>re will be an annual nomination fee of $20.00 foreach Competitive Division entered. $10.00 will be placed inthe Competitive Division that the horse is nominated for and$10.00 into either the Flatshod or the Performance Super Mareof the Year money. All monies collected will be paid out in agiven year. <strong>The</strong> owner of record at the conclusion of each pointyear as determined above will be the recipient of the MotivatedMares Programs cash awards which will be awarded at theTWHBEA Awards Banquet each year. TWHBEA will matchthe nomination fees up to the first 100 mares.<strong>The</strong> top five mares in each division of <strong>The</strong> MotivatedMares Competitive Division (Category 1), will receivemonetary awards with recognition given also to maresranking 6-10. <strong>The</strong>re will be only two winners with payoutfor the Motivated Mares Super Mare Division (Category 2).<strong>The</strong> winners will be the two mares, one Flatshod and onePerformance horse, with the highest overall points in theirrespective competitive division.TrAInErs’ EnforcEMEnT InITIATIvEsET To BEgIn<strong>The</strong> Walking Horse Trainers’ Association’s EnforcementInitiative will begin with its swabbing protocol at participatinghorse shows on June 15, 2012. <strong>The</strong> new initiative will test forcaustic agents and masking agents through gas chromatographymassspectrometry (GC-MS) technology.Any entry testing positive for a foreign substance violationthrough the enforcement initiative will result in the trainerreceiving a two-week suspension of their trainers’ license and allviolations will be made public on the WHTA web site. In addition,all violations will be made public to industry HIOs accepting theprotocol.continued on page 93
