Thundercepror,developed by Ernieware in theNetherlands, features icon%to1frtic.1•1,driven menus and a load/save11feature. Ever seen that on a1Ezap-to-kill game before? No, ,neither have we. And it almostworks— if only the shoot-'emuppart had been just a smidgenfaster.Load in the game and you see1 C 1 IItunfilifil re m• 1•1111F. IF*1511F--twit 0mots • k —1 • I. o•a series of icons which allowyou to load/save your hi-scoreand position in the game, checkout your hi-score and anymedals you may have won, lookat the configuration of theenemy fleet and the number ofthese craft you have knockedOut of the sky and finally re-armyour ship between levels.All nice touches which makeThunderceptor stand above thenormal shoot 'em up in terms ofpresentation. Graphically, theshoot 'em part is pretty good.Big ships, nice animation — butit lacks the sort of urgency that aclassic zapper needs to keepyou coming back for more.It's a scrolling shoot 'em up inthe Defender/Salamander style— but falls short of theclassiness of those two games.The action seems a mite slow— although it is difficult to zapthe approaching enemy craft,which come in many and variedforms. R EVI EWER . TI MYeah! Rygar, at last! Get thetape loaded up NOW! Niceloading screen — but whatabout the game! Hmmm.Graphics ain't that impressive.Rygar looks a bit wimpish andmoves a bit oddly for my liking.And was that the first level? I'vecompleted it without losing alife! Shock horror! On to leveltwo— which is a bit moredifficult. I'm starting to enjoythis a bit more now despite thedodgy graphics.And some of the effects —like the three creatures doingacrobatics, leaping on eachothers shoulders — are a bitneat.If you've not seen the coin-opyou won't know that Rygar is abarbarian character trapped in aworld full of larger than lifemonsters, objects and weaponsto be collected and, moreimportantly, a lot of fun to behad!The coin-op is a multi-level,horizontally scrolling game withstunning graphics, hugecharacters and great gameplay.The Spectrum version, wehaven't seen any others yet,crept into our office just beforewe went to press with thisissue, and initially it looks verydisappointing. But ignore thegraphics maybe we're beingspoilt by all those ST games —and play the game. Soon you'llbe hooked.Although the first couple oflevels are reasonably easy tocomplete you soon work outthat almost all the elements ofthe coin-op are present so ifyou have played the arcadeversion, you'll be able to use allthose hard-learnt tricks in thecomputer version.As you hack 'n' slash yourway through the assortedmonsters you'll find somethings are transformed intoobjects or weapons which willbe useful to you in the future.Objects like:• The Star gives you extrafiring range.• The Crown — gives you extrafirepower. You can kill morethan one monster at a time.• The Tiger Head — allows youto kill monsters by jumping ontheir heads. Without this youcan only stun them using thistechnique.• The Shield — makes youinvulnerable for a short time.• The Sun — allows you tojump higher and have a crack atflying monsters.Each level has to becompleted within a set timelimit —ticking away at the topof the screen. So don't hangaround killing monsters for toolong. You can go back onyourself to pick up objects —but beware wasting too muchtime.If you reveal a question markdon't pick it up — shoot it first touncover what the real object itshiding.Ignore the graphics and enjoythe game is my message. We'veyet to see the other versions —but we know you've beenwaiting for this game with itchyjoystick fingers, so watch Outfor more Rygar reviews in upcomingissues. Overall,Spectrum Rygar is slightlydisappointing compared withElite's Thundercats, which is,we have to say it, a similar typeof game.Spectrum owners should takea look at the game before theybuy — this version could be forhardened Rygar fans only.ilk GRAPHICSO.
