offices and the hospital. They put her
on medication, and when she was a
month old, she underwent the surgery
to repair her heart. Andi was admitted
to Palmetto Health for 5 days before
she was transported to MUSC for
heart surgery to repair the VSD.”
“I was worried,” said Van. “The
doctor explained to me that if they
ruptured the part of her heart that
controlled her heart rate, she would
need a pacemaker implanted and have
it for the rest of her life. Throughout
the surgery, I sat waiting, and hoping,
and praying that everything was going
well.”
Although the surgery was a success,
the Montgomery’s also learned

causes hormone deficiency. “She’s
on medication,” said Elsie, “and will
have to take it the rest of her life.”
After overcoming VSD and coping
with Andi’s Hypothyroidism, Elsie
and Van noticed that Andi had something
on her lip. “It looked like she
was always wearing lipstick,” said Elsie.
“Her bottom lip was really red.”
Andi was once again visiting the
doctor. “We were told she had a Hemangioma,
a birthmark. It was a blood
filled tumor on her lip. She was having
difficulty speaking and she would
drool all the time. Her doctor said to
just leave it alone. But we researched
it some, and decided to take her to a
plastic surgeon. When she was thirteen
months old, she underwent surgery
again to have it removed.”
Shortly after her surgery, Andi began
talking and was able to pronounce

her words. “I think she would have
had a lot of difficulty if we hadn’t pursued
the surgery,” Van said.
Andi is now six years old and is
doing well. The Montgomery’s have
since had another child, Ginny. “We
were thankful there weren’t any complications
with Ginny,” said Elsie.
“She is only one year old, and she was
definitely a surprise.”
The Montgomery’s faith in God is
what they say pulled them through the
trials of Andi’s health. “When Andi
was going in for the surgery to repair
her heart, our minister at the time, and
two lay leaders from our church, came
over and baptized her,” said Elsie. “It
was such a moving experience. Without
our faith in God and His plan for
Andi, I am not sure that we would have
survived. Although we were scared for
our daughter, we knew that He was
present with her through it all.”
