All students begin with a core group <strong>of</strong>courses that develop visual literacy <strong>and</strong>basic studio techniques <strong>and</strong> emphasize anunderst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> the concepts <strong>and</strong> principles<strong>of</strong> the visual arts. Course schedules aredivided between liberal arts courses <strong>and</strong>studio courses which use materials, concepts<strong>and</strong> skills that students can apply to theirchosen area <strong>of</strong> study in the second year. Inthe first semester, each student is introducedto DCAD’s six majors through FoundationSeminar, a course split into two-weeksections allowing for all new students to learnmore about each area <strong>of</strong> study.
