Side BearingsLoad Cell Testing: A second techniqueused to determine the suitability ofresilient blocks and their correspondingcounterparts is to use a calibrated loadcell. Using this technique, the load cellcan be inserted between the side bearingtop cap and the body side bearing wearplate. The car should be gently lowereduntil the top of the side bearing is 5-1/16" above the bolster. The resultingvertical force output can be comparedagainst the nominal preload. Record thismeasurement and repeat the procedurefor the opposite side. Worn resilientblocks and other components leadingto insufficient vertical forces should bereplaced. Contact A.
