4-H DAIRY STEER SHOW — DS<br />

OPEN ONLY TO YOUTH PARTICIPATING IN THE CLEVELAND COUNTY 4-H DAIRY STEER CLUB.<br />

CHECK-IN: Steers must be in place in Weathers<br />

Livestock Arena by 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10, <strong>2015</strong>.<br />

There is no entry fee for this show.<br />

SHOW TIMES: Showmanship competition begins at 1 p.m.<br />

on Sunday Oct. 11, <strong>2015</strong>. Stock show immediately follows.<br />

Live auction begins at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 11, <strong>2015</strong>.<br />

Project Description & Background: The 4-H Dairy Steer Club, coordinated<br />

through N.C. Cooperative Extension’s 4-H Youth Development<br />

Program, provides an opportunity for youth ages 5 to 18 to develop<br />

important life skills through their involvement in a long-term, handson<br />

livestock activity. It also helps participants develop basic animal<br />

husbandry skills and a greater appreciation for production agriculture.<br />

Terminal Show – Rules and regulations<br />

n Animals will not be allowed to enter the barn until visually inspected<br />

and passed by health officials.<br />

n Health regulations — Please refer to the general rules for livestock<br />

on page 20.<br />

n To be eligible for competition in the fitting and showmanship contest<br />

and the stock class, participants must submit a completed entry<br />

form at the back of this book or online at www.ClevelandCounty<strong>Fair</strong>.<br />

com.<br />

n Important: No entries will be accepted after Sept. 16, <strong>2015</strong>.<br />

n Exhibitors will feed and care for their animals during the <strong>Fair</strong> until<br />

they are sold at auction.<br />

n Exhibitors are required to sell their animals to form a feedlot load.<br />

<strong>2015</strong> sale details will be announced at fair or before.<br />

FITTING AND SHOWMANSHIP CONTEST<br />

Exhibitors will be evaluated on their ability to present their steer in a<br />

manner that will develop the most favorable impression on the judge.<br />

Elements include:<br />

n Grooming<br />

n Leading and setting up the animal in the show ring<br />

n Show ring etiquette<br />

n Ability to answer technical questions about the livestock project<br />

PREMIUMS<br />

1st: $40 2nd: $35 3rd: $30 4th: $25 5th & below: $20<br />

DS-1-1 Cloverbud Fitting and Showmanship<br />

Non-competitive class for exhibitors 5-8 years of age.<br />

PREMIUMS<br />

Each exhibitor will receive a $20 premium.<br />

Exhibitors will be critiqued, not ranked.<br />

DS-1-2 Junior Fitting and Showmanship<br />

Competitive class for exhibitors 9-13 years of age.<br />

DS-1-3 Senior Fitting and Showmanship<br />

Competitive class for exhibitors 14-19 years of age.<br />

STOCK SHOW<br />

Steers will be evaluated on their relative growth and performance, carcass<br />

merit, and other factors relevant to their value as a meat animal.<br />

PREMIUMS<br />

1st: $40 2nd: $35 3rd: $30 4th: $25 5th & below: $20<br />

DS-2-1 Cloverbud Steers<br />

Non-competitive class for exhibitors 5-8 years of age.<br />

Each exhibitor will receive a $20 premium.<br />

Competitive class for exhibitors 9-13 years of age.<br />
