Aaron Marcus, The Past 100 Years of the Future, Page 58
Star Trek, Television Series, 1966-69
In marked contrast with many somewhat conservative HCI-content in movies of the
1960s and 70s, the StarTrek, TV series 1966-69, and film series, from 1979-
, Creator,
Gene Roddenberry, showed many creative innovations in HCI devices and techniques
supposedly of about the year 2366, from medical diagnostic tools with their intriguing,
cryptic displays, to the ever-present voice communicators, which were so well
established as a theme that they were respectfully copied and used in Galaxy Quest, the
comedy that pays homage to TV science-fiction series. Another aspect of the series was
the cross-cultural, cross-gender, and cross-species make-up of its crew, which
suggested that much user-centered design might have been done to accommodate
many different kinds of personas and use scenarios…of course, I might be reading into
this a bit.
