4. Enrollment LimitsGraduate StudentsThe normal courseload for graduate students is12 units per quarter. Only registered studentscarrying a minimum load <strong>of</strong> 8 units are eligibleto be appointed as graduate student researchersor as teaching assistants; to receivefellowships and most forms <strong>of</strong> financial aid; andto be eligible for campus and extramuralbenefits and services (<strong>University</strong> Housing,Student Health Service, etc.).Except as authorized by <strong>the</strong>ir departments,graduate students should not enroll in morethan 12 units <strong>of</strong> strictly graduate work—i.e.,courses numbered in <strong>the</strong> 200s and/or 400s—orin more than 16 units <strong>of</strong> upper-division coursework,or in a combination <strong>of</strong> upper-division andgraduate coursework which exceeds <strong>the</strong>semaximums.Generally speaking, <strong>the</strong>re is no part-timestatus for graduate students at UCSB, nor are<strong>the</strong>re reduced fees for a reduced courseload.Most lending agencies demand repayment <strong>of</strong>loans if a student is not registered or is carryingless than a normal courseload. The Immigrationand Naturalization Service requires internationalstudents to be engaged in a full course <strong>of</strong> studywhile at UCSB.College <strong>of</strong> Creative StudiesStudents in <strong>the</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Creative Studiesnormally take four courses totaling at least 15units each quarter and are not required to filepetitions for excess programs.College <strong>of</strong> EngineeringStudents in <strong>the</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Engineering aresubject to <strong>the</strong> following course enrollmentlimits:• 12 units—Minimum load for full-time standing.• 14.5 units—Maximum number for any studenton academic probation. Also recommendedfor students with disabilities or part-timeemployment.• 17 units—Maximum allowable for first-quarterfreshmen without petition to <strong>the</strong> dean <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>college.• 18 units—Maximum without petition to <strong>the</strong>dean <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> college for all o<strong>the</strong>r students in<strong>the</strong> college.Undergraduate students in <strong>the</strong> College <strong>of</strong>Engineering must pass at least 36 units eachacademic year. At least three-fourths <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> unitspassed must include courses prescribed for <strong>the</strong>major. Complete details <strong>of</strong> this requirement arecontained in <strong>the</strong> UCSB General Catalog.College <strong>of</strong> Letters and ScienceStudents in <strong>the</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Letters and Scienceare subject to <strong>the</strong> following course enrollmentlimits:• 12 units—Minimum load for full-time standing.• 17 units—Maximum without petition to <strong>the</strong>dean <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> college for students on academicprobation.• 21 units—Maximum without petition to <strong>the</strong>dean <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> college for all o<strong>the</strong>r students.The average course load for students in <strong>the</strong>College <strong>of</strong> Letters and Science is 15–17 units perquarter.5. AttendanceYou must attend <strong>the</strong> classes you register forbeginning with <strong>the</strong> first day <strong>of</strong> instruction. If youcannot attend due to reasons beyond yourcontrol (such as serious illness), notify yourinstructors. The <strong>Office</strong> <strong>of</strong> Student Life can assistyou if you are too ill to contact your instructors.Although some instructors will drop studentswho are absent from <strong>the</strong>ir classes, it is normallyyour responsibility to drop any class that you donot wish to complete. If you do not attend aclass and do not drop it <strong>of</strong>ficially by <strong>the</strong>published deadline, you will receive a failinggrade.6. Address VerificationAll students MUST update or confirm <strong>the</strong>iraddress information as new students and everyfall quarter. Additionally, you are encouraged toupdate your address information as necessarythroughout <strong>the</strong> year. UCSB mail is not forwardedby <strong>the</strong> U.S. Postal Service.New and Returning StudentsA block may be placed against your registrationif you do not update or confirm youraddress by:1. Using GOLD (at gnet.ucsb.edu) afterSeptember 1.2. Turning in a Change <strong>of</strong> Address form to <strong>the</strong><strong>Office</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Registrar</strong> after September 1.Refer to <strong>the</strong> section “Privacy <strong>of</strong> StudentRecords” on page 20 for information regardingyour rights pertaining to academic records.7. <strong>University</strong> E-mailU-Mail (<strong>University</strong> e-mail) is now being used forstudent notification by course instructors andadministrative departments including <strong>the</strong> <strong>Office</strong><strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Registrar</strong>. All UCSB students shouldobtain a U-Mail account and keep it active.1. If you have not already done so, activateyour U-Mail account today atwww.umail.ucsb.edu.2. Forward your U-Mail to ano<strong>the</strong>r e-mailservice, if you prefer. Your U-Mail accountmust be active for this to work.3. UCSB Classes inVentura and Santa Maria11Through its Off Campus Studies program, UCSB<strong>of</strong>fers live and televised courses every quarter at<strong>the</strong> UCSB Ventura Center located at 3585 MapleSt., Suite 112, Ventura, CA 93003, as well as at<strong>the</strong> UCSB Santa Maria Center located at AllanHancock College, 800 South College Drive,Santa Maria, CA 93454. In Ventura, courses areavailable in <strong>the</strong> following disciplines: anthropology,computer science, computer engineering,English, history, law and society, politicalscience, psychology and sociology. In SantaMaria, courses are available in <strong>the</strong> followingdisciplines: English and history. Occasionally,courses from o<strong>the</strong>r disciplines are provided tosatisfy General Education requirements. Coursesin computer science and engineering (availablein Ventura) are televised exclusively, with labstaking place on <strong>the</strong> main Santa Barbara campus.Live classes are held once a week for threehours between 4 and 7 p.m. or between 7 and10 p.m. Televised courses are broadcast fromcampus during <strong>the</strong> day. Course exams are heldin both Ventura and Santa Maria.
