Employment & Education With the employment of a new coordinator for employment and education, IRO, together with NOGEPA, continued efforts to attract more qualified young staff into the oil and gas industry. Most of 2010 was used to identify existing efforts in this area as well as finding ways to strengthen the cooperation between IRO and NOGEPA. Education To IRO it is important to maintain good contacts with all relevant education and training institutes in the Netherlands at the different levels. Many IRO members are already involved with different programmes. In 2010, the third year of Avans Hogeschool Den Bosch’s Minor ‘Offshore Engineering & Automation’ was run with 40 students. Many lectures and excursions are arranged by IRO members and this practical way of learning is very well received by the students. More and more participants in this Minor originate from schools other than Avans, and see this as a great opportunity to start a career in the offshore industry. Since September 2007 Van Hall Larenstein University in Leeuwarden has been running their Bachelor course Petrochemicals and Offshore. The set-up is targeted towards competency based learning with many projects, excursions and internships. In 2010 this proved to be a successful formula and the first graduates have already found jobs. ROC Kop van Noord-Holland started a ‘kopklas’ Petrochemistry and Offshore in September 2009. This unique course is meant as an addition to ‘MBO-4’ level, specializing in oil and gas installations and production technology. The course takes a year which means that in 2010 the first students graduated and have already found their way into the business. Also a second ‘kopklas’ was started besides the normal MBO-4 programme that this ROC is running. The MIWB, (Maritime Institute Willem Barentsz), is a school specialized in maritime operations, including a specialization in Offshore. Just as in the two preceding years, in 2010 the course was voted one of the best in the Netherlands in a research conducted by ‘keuzegids hoger onderwijs’. Together with three other branch organizations (HISWA, Scheepsbouw Nederland and the ‘Vereniging van Waterbouwers’) IRO supports the efforts that are undertaken to launch a number of study programmes in Maritime Technology. One of the specializations will be maritime offshore studies. In the North of the Netherlands a Bachelor’s programme is being set up at NHL in Leeuwarden while an MBO programme is getting off the ground at ROC Friese Poort in Sneek. An agreement has also been reached on expanding the programmes in the West of the country. STC (Shipping and Transport College) in Rotterdam is investigating the options to offer both a Bachelor as well as an MBO level course. These will be implemented in cooperation with the above mentioned schools in the North of the Netherlands. Apart from the typical offshore / oil & gas related studies there are several MBO, HBO and Academical studies in more general fields such as Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Process, Operations, Maintenance, Civil Engineering etc. IRO realizes that these studies are also very important for inflow to the industry. When needed, IRO mediates / coordinates for traineeships, graduating projects and site visits. Events On 28 April 2010 the fourth Navingo Maritime & Offshore Career event was held. This busy event has grown to be one of the biggest career events in the Netherlands and is well visited by students and representatives from the maritime industry. IRO manned a stand together with NOGEPA to inform participants of the opportunities in the oil and gas industry. Avans Hogeschool in cooperation with KIVI NIRIA organized an offshore seminar on 25 November 2010. Besides various speakers from the industry the students also presented their project works leading to interesting discussions. With sponsoring from IRO, 60 Msc students Offshore Technology, attended the Deep Offshore Technology Conference organized in the RAI Amsterdam from 30 November- 2 December. They were very enthusiastic about the opportunity to see the latest developments in deep offshore technology. 12 IRO Annual Report 2010
Dutch Maritime Network An important task of IRO is to promote the upstream oil and gas industry with the younger public. To do this, IRO is involved in the Taskforce Jongeren, a task group within the Stichting Nederland Maritiem Land (NML). The taskforce aims to reach youngsters between 10 and 18 years old via educational material like ‘Gave Haven’ and ‘Work@ Water’. At the end of 2009, new material was released targeting group 7/8 of primary schools in the form of a board game called ‘Schip in zicht’. Also the ‘Spetters gezocht’ campaign continued with participation in career events, publication of newsletters and brochures. Special efforts were made in 2010 to target scouting groups; the taskforce was present at the JubJam100 event, the celebration of 100 years of scouting in the Netherlands. A successful, annually returning project is the ‘Vlettenproject’. In 2010 two different projects were run and IRO was proud to sponsor a boat in each of them. The project in South-Holland, called ‘Vletten op de Maas’ was held for the fourth time in 2010. In May, during Dordt in Stoom, the participants raced their boats and handed them over to the scouting groups. In this IRO sponsored the Willem de Zwijger College in Alblasserwaard. The new project in North Holland called ‘Vette Vletten’ was finalized with a spectacular race during Sail Amsterdam and IRO sponsored the young but very enthusiastic group from the Regius College in Schagen. ‘Vette vletten’ race during SAIL 2010 On 21 August 2010, the Vlettenrace was held at the SAILsation area in Amsterdam. Enthusiastic students of ten VMBO schools in the Province of North Holland built twelve boats over the past six months with support of Scouting groups. © IRO 2011 Training course ‘Oil and gas well sourced’ This non-technical course is meant for people who (start to) work in the industry and would benefit from gaining some general understanding of how oil and gas came into being, how it is found, how it is produced, what technology is used and how the industry is organized. The training is also useful for people who provide products and services to the sector. The course combines presentations with a tour around the Keppel Verolme yard where the different offshore ships and installations can be discussed while looking at examples. In 2010 the training course was given six times, of which two were in English. One in-house training course was held for Van Oord. In an in-house course the programme can be adjusted to the specific needs of the company and a greater number of participants are able to attend. During this project the boats were officially launched in Edam and tested during a canal tour in Amsterdam where the students were welcomed in the City Hall of Amsterdam by Ms. Carolien Gehrels. The closing event of this project was on 21 August during Sail 2010 in which the schools competed against each other in an exciting boat race which was witnessed by the Queen’s Commissioner, Johan Remkes. The Triade Atlas College Edam won the prize for ‘Fastest boat’, ROC Amsterdam was the ‘Best boat building school’, PCC Alkmaar had the ‘Best built boat’ and BIM Bakenesser Group of Haarlem was the ‘Best scouting group’. IRO sponsored the Regius College in Schagen, unfortunately they did not win a prize, but of course we are very proud of the boys! The event was organized by Nederland Maritiem Land and Amports, supported by the Province of North Holland and North Holland Scouting Admirality.
