Innovative Technology Innovation is crucial for the oil and gas industry as the new finds of oil and gas are often at difficult locations such as deep offshore and arctic areas. Bringing down the ever growing costs of exploration and production is also an important issue together with improving and increasing the production from existing fields. Minimizing the carbon footprint for environmental considerations is crucial. Good reason for IRO to stress the importance of innovation and for IRO to promote a number of innovation programmes offered by the Dutch government. Maritime Innovation Programme Within the frame work of the ‘Maritime Innovation Programme’ the Dutch offshore supply industry has been working to develop new innovations to secure the future oil and gas demand. The programme started mid 2007 with a budget of 39.5 million Euro allocated by the Ministry of Economic affairs. As the programme is in its final stage, a new innovation agenda for the maritime industry was presented in November 2010 to the Dutch political world. Copies of the agenda are available at IRO. One of the activities of the MIP that was supported by IRO was a workshop on composite materials. IRO SME innovation consultant Due to lack of results, IRO decided mid 2010 to end the cooperation with the IRO SME innovation consultant who was allocated to IRO under the Maritime Innovation Programme (MIP). Though IRO recognized that the activities of the IRO SME innovation consultant contributed to the promotion of the Maritime Innovation Programme to IRO members, the main reason for cancelling the cooperation was that the SME consultant did not succeed in realizing concrete projects. The limited scope of the MIP (deep offshore and the LNG supply chain) and other conditions to qualify for support under the programme were seen as the main reasons for the failure. Maritime Innovation Forum In 2010 IRO regularly attended the Dutch Maritime Board (NML) Maritime Innovation Forum (MIF) meetings. IRO was granted a support by MIF for organizing a decommissioning seminar with ITF and Decom North Sea. However, as it proved not possible to agree on a date the seminar was postponed to 2011. Underwater noise study On 23 April 2010 IRO organized a meeting on the need for financing a study on the effects of offshore underwater noise on marine life. This study is important as new legislation, that intends to forbid offshore piling because of the negative effect on marine life, is in preparation. However, in reality the effects of offshore piling on marine life are not determined and there is no standard for underwater noise. The outcome of the study might be an important lobby argument to prevent the introduction of the legislation that forbids offshore piling. At the meeting the researchers who will carry out the study explained the scope of the project. Total cost of the study is € 845.000 of which the government and NOGEPA are willing to finance € 645.000. The supply industry has been requested to finance € 200.000 of this study to be divided over four years. The outcome of the meeting was that four IRO members that have interest in offshore pile driving have agreed to contribute a total amount of € 120.000 which proved to be enough to give the study a go ahead. 4 IRO Annual Report 2010
Export promotion Export promotion remains an important IRO activity. In 2010 a large number of activities were organized. Participation in oil and gas exhibitions, outgoing trade missions and other export promotional activities were held. Some of these export promotion activities were organized by IRO. In other cases the lead was taken by organizations like FME, HME, EVD, other (foreign) associations, embassies etc. Exhibitions 2010 The IRO exhibition programme is selected upon experience, interest shown by the member companies (during meetings, visits, the annual exhibition survey and so on) and advice of the Committee on Commercial and Financial Affairs, which reviews the programme. In 2010 IRO participated in the following exhibitions: Offshore Technology Conference - Houston, USA Attendance at the 2010 Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) reached 72,900 as offshore energy industry experts from around the world came together to share technological advances and innovative approaches at the world’s largest event for offshore resources development. OTC was held 3-6 May at Reliant Park in Houston. Attendance surpassed the 2009 total of 67,700, and the sold-out exhibition was the largest in 28 years, totalling more than 568,000 square feet, up from 557,000 square feet in 2009. OTC’s expanded exhibition in Reliant Arena in addition to Reliant Center, enabled the exhibition’s growth. Although this was a record year for OTC, the drilling accident in the Gulf of Mexico affected the mood and the tone of the event. The Dutch pavilion had the same size and concept as in 2009, however the Holland branding has been changed for the next 3 years. In total there were 44 exhibitors in the Dutch pavilion. Neftegaz - Moscow, Russia Under the 2g@there programme Russia, IRO organized a small Dutch information booth at the Neftegaz exhibition from 21-25 June 2010. Seven companies were represented in the booth. The exhibition was not a success. Official figures, such as the number of visitors, are unknown. IRO has no plans to participate in the 2012 edition of this show. Offshore Northern Seas - Stavanger, Norway Attendance at the 2010 Offshore Northern Seas (ONS) conference and exhibition set a new record, according to the official statistics. A total of 49,735 visitors were attracted to this major industry event in Stavanger from 24-27 August, an increase compared to the 41,906 people that visited the previous exhibition in 2008. For the second time the pavilion was located in Hall J. In total there were 32 companies represented in the pavilion. Overview Exhibitions 2010 Rio Oil & Gas - Rio de Janeiro, Brasil Under the 2g@there programme Brasil, IRO organized a Dutch Pavilion at the Rio Oil & Gas show. The 15th edition of Rio Oil & Gas ended on 16 September breaking several records. At the end of the event, more than 53,000 visitors from 51 countries had walked through the exhibition and conference hallways. This was 33% higher than the attendance of 39,000 people from the last edition in 2008. In total there were 12 companies represented in the Dutch Pavilion. IRO has again booked exhibition space for the 2012 edition. ADIPEC - Abu Dhabi, UAE Under the 2g@there programme Middle East, IRO organized a Dutch Pavilion at this exhibition for the third time. The exhibition was held in the brand new ADNEC exhibiton complex. Again there was a growth in both visitors and exhibitors. In total there were 45,597 visitors. A growth of 18% compared to the 2008 edition. In total there were 29 exhibitors in the 420 sqm Dutch Pavilion. IRO has again booked exhibition space for the 2012 edition.
