Labor Department and the Greater Mount Airy Chamber of Commerce, was recently held at Cross Creek Country Club honoring local businesses for their achievements in safety. The Chamber congratulates our members for their honors of outstanding on-the-job safety. Duke Energy Carolinas was the corporate sponsor for this event. The Golden LEAF Foundation has scheduled a second round of outreach sessions throughout North Carolina to provide more potential applicants with information about the new Open Grants Program process and priorities. The Foundation will begin accepting proposals for the Open Grants Program starting July 1, 2009. Nonprofit organizations and governmental entities are eligible for consideration of Golden LEAF grants. Prospective applicants are encouraged to review funding priorities and guidelines for the Open Grants Program posted on the Foundation’s Web site. Representatives from the companies were honored by the North Star Academy for their company’s efforts. James Bell, senior materials specialist, and Carol Colna, human resources manager accepted the plaque for CK Technologies. Bryan Turney received the plaque for Lowes Hardware. Karrah Dunn accepted the plaque for Walmart. David Hayes, career development coordinator at North Surry High School said the sponsors provided opportunities to broaden the students horizons through visits to the companies finding out first-hand what is needed in the workplace. CK Technologies was there to present awards for an art contest. Participating students submitted a healthcare logo. The winning logo, by Jenna Upchurch, will be featured on Company Wellness information. Jenna also was awarded $100.
