In 2009, the palm oil sectorcontributed RM17 billion or 3.3 per cent (onethird) to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) andaccounted for RM49.6 billion in exports. Underthe 10th Malaysian Plan (2011-2015), Malaysiaaims to boost palm oil industry’s GDP’s outputto RM21.9 billion, with RM69.3 billion in exportsearnings. To achieve the target, Malaysia will bepromoted as a global hub for palm oil and thepreferred destination for foreign investments inthe development of value-added products andsustainable supply of raw materials to support thedownstream activities.As the way forward for the industry, the RM162million invested by Cargill is to expand their existingoperations and build a new vegetable oil refinery in<strong>Port</strong> <strong>Klang</strong> Free Zone (PKFZ).
