Guro # ɓl vi bend; rise; swellThus, finally, the stem 'cover' is represented in SM, although in adifferent form.Type III: *mp. It consists of only one set, 'to sting'. Unfortunately,among the SM forms provided by Claire, only one (that of Dan) belongsto the stem in question, and even that one is given in a form that isimpossible in Dan, ɓ (as it was mentioned, in the nasal context only m ispossible, rather than ɓõ); in my data, the Dan-Gweetaa form is ɓō 'to sting(of insect)'. As for the other SM forms given by Claire, some of them(Yaure põ, Mwan fõ) are absent in my data (and to me seem ratherdoubtful), others belong to a quite different stem:*p dig-2 (to) > Dan (bl, gw) p vt dig out, Tura # p vt dig (soil; hole),Guro # f vt pierce, Mwan # p vt pierce,Wan # p vt pierce, Beng p vt pierce(After some hesitation, I checked out the Mano form fòō 'to dig';otherwise, it should be considered as irregular.)Therefore, the reasoning based on the presumption of existence ofType III cannot be considered as valid.Type IV: *b. Both sets, 'stomach, belly' and 'white', seem to be valid,but there is one detail to add: in Wan, the reflex of the stem for 'stomach,belly' is blū, which makes me reconstruct Proto-SM form *Ǹ-pùlù (see3.1.2.).Type V: *v. As has been mentioned in 3.2.2., v- in Mano, Mwan, Wanand Beng can be explained through diachronic change of *b- before backlabial vowels in certain contexts. This makes it unnecessary to differentiatebetween Claire's types IV and V.As for Claire's stem 'to throw', she has fused two different SM stems,my *blŋ throw-1 (to) and *b send-2 (see 3.2.1.), both well represented inthe languages of the group.Type VI: *p. Claire's sets seem to be valid, I disagree on just one pointconcerning her set 'to tear, to split': I consider the Wan form pl asbelonging to a stem different from all others (see *pa tear in 3.1.1.), whichis yet to be confirmed.Type VII: *f. This type rises no questions; on the reconstruction of anasal prefix in the stem *Ǹ-fGŋ 'lungs' see 3.1.5.Type VIII: *ɓ. Claire's sets are valid, there are just minor corrections tobe done:1) 'liver, heart': the Wan form (ka)ɓlú 'belly' given by Claire is in factk-blū, I mentioned the second component of this form when discussingthe type IV. I do not think that it belongs to the type VIII;
2) for the same stem, the Mano form given by ZE is ɓūlū (rather thanbulu);3) 'antelope, goat': the Mano form is ɓò (rather than gbó, bú, bó).These criticisms are not, by any means, intended to belittle Claire'swork, which was an important contribution to the development of Mandecomparative studies. It is simply meant to demonstrate the progress madein the Mande studies during the last 15-20 years which allows a comparativistto work with much more precise data as well as continue ourdiscussion on the importance of internal sub-group reconstructions —which, according to Claire, «seem to be doomed to failure» [Grégoire1988:104].3.3.
