The <strong>Christmas</strong> ConcertThe end of <strong>the</strong> year is always an exciting and busytime at <strong>Swans</strong>. On Tuesday 20 th December <strong>the</strong><strong>Secondary</strong> School celebrated in style with <strong>the</strong> annual<strong>Christmas</strong> Concert showcasing <strong>the</strong> musical talents ofboth <strong>the</strong> students and staff alike. Mr Omissi, ourresident compere, <strong>to</strong>ok <strong>the</strong> helm and safely guided <strong>the</strong>cast and audience through an evening of excellententertainment. This year saw <strong>the</strong> addition of originaldrama sketches celebrating <strong>the</strong> season written andperformed by students in both <strong>the</strong> lower and middleschools. Year 8 romped through <strong>the</strong> spirit of<strong>Christmas</strong> with fantastic characters experiencing fantastic problems which were eventuallyresolved. Year 10 were more reflective but set a cracking pace as <strong>the</strong>y remembered what hasmade <strong>the</strong> <strong>Christmas</strong> season so special in times gone by. The musical items under <strong>the</strong> direction ofMr. Peacock were fur<strong>the</strong>r enhanced by <strong>the</strong> assistance of Miss Laura Krier who trained <strong>the</strong> choirand vocal soloists. The fare on offer was an exciting and eclectic mix. We were treated <strong>to</strong> sometechnically demanding trumpet solos from Alicia andswayed <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> rhythms of African Drums played bystudents from Year 8. The Keyboard group played ustraditional and modern <strong>Christmas</strong> tunes. Even <strong>the</strong>audience <strong>to</strong>ok an active part in a spirited rendition of ‘OCome All Ye Faithful’. The concert was linked by a seriesof delightful readings by students and staff from DylanThomas’ ‘Memories of <strong>Christmas</strong>’. Miss Ca<strong>the</strong>rineimpressed us with a version in Welsh and Miss Helenmade us salivate as she read about <strong>Christmas</strong> dinner. Thewhole evening came <strong>to</strong> a tumultuous end with <strong>the</strong> joint Staff / Pupil Band including AndyPeacock, David Kirkland, Rob Maldonado, Dan Whitney and Laura Krier playing ‘<strong>Fair</strong>ytale ofNew York’ and ‘Merry <strong>Christmas</strong> Everybody’. Thanks <strong>to</strong> Mrs Hoogewoud for guiding <strong>the</strong>development of <strong>the</strong> drama sketches and producing <strong>the</strong> entertainment. We must also not forget<strong>the</strong> contribution of Dan and Jero our technical advisors and crew, <strong>the</strong> administrative, kitchen andestates staff.Primary Book ClubA big thank you goes out <strong>to</strong> all of those parents, students andteachers who buy through our Primary School book club. With everyorder we accumulate points which we can cash in for books. Wehave just received over 50 books for our library inprimary including fact books, dinosaur books, ‘TinTin’, ‘Beast Quest’, ‘Where’s Wally?’, ‘Diary of aWimpy Kid’, a large selection of <strong>the</strong> extremelypopular ‘Horrid Henry’ books and many more.
