(120 x 88 cm)Gift of the artists, courtesy of Galería Nina Menocal, Mexico CityEstimated price: $4,000-$6,000Atelier Morales, the two-artist collective formed by Teresa Ayuso and Juan Luis Morales, work mainly withthe medium of photography, focusing on themes of history, architecture, culture and collective memory.Trained as architects, they left Cuba and live in Paris where they promote Cuban art, architecture anddesign in France. Their photographic work, often hand-tinted or technically altered, offers scenes that mixfantasy with reality while investigating social and political issues.Clasificación N°3 / Classification No. 3, 2003, from the series Los Bohíos, is a photograph that presents eighthouses in a system of organization from a project involving site investigation, classification and documentationof these original and transformed houses that form part of “an abandoned cultural patrimony.” Bohíos is thename given to peasant homes or huts in Cuba since the indigenous people first appeared there centuries ago.Some bohíos still remain on the island but the majority are being destroyed by people and harsh weather,so this popular tradition of construction is becoming extinct.Ayuso studied architecture at the University of Havana in 1985 and later continued studying industrialdesign at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México in 1986. Morales also studied architecture at theUniversity of Havana in 1983 and completed a Doctorate in architecture at the Escuela Técnica Superiorde Arquitectura de Madrid in 1986. Selected exhibitions include Pilgrims, Curator’s Voice Gallery, Miami,FL, 2011; Arte Multiple et la Série Voyage Equinoccial, Havana Gallery, Zurich, Switzerland, 2009; RisingStars, Galería Nina Menocal, Mexico City, 2006; and Beyond Delirious, CIFO, Miami, 2005. Ayuso and Moraleslive and work in Paris.13
