LOT #20DANILO DUEÑAS (Colombia, b. 1956)Black Green / Negro verde, 2007Painted wood and cardboard on MDF31 1/8 x 14 3/4 x 2 1/2 in. (81 x 37.5 x 6.5 cm)Gift of the artist and Alejandra von Hartz Gallery, MiamiEstimated price: $10,000-$15,000Danilo Dueñas is a conceptual artist working with everyday objects and materials such as construction wood,MDF (medium-density fiberboard), car tires, planks, discarded furniture, or house trash. His compositionsgive new meaning for to these scrappy incongruent materials by creating strange configurations with them.Dueñas is an inheritor of the abstract geometric tradition in Colombia, but his contribution to thisbifurcation in contemporary art is the investigation of the nature of the objects and materials that he usesto create complex and calculated geometries. In the painting, Black Green, 2007, Dueñas juxtaposes materials in a form of povera assemblage that is alsoperfectly designed, challenging not only the materials but also the two-dimensional quality of the pictorialspace, giving a quasi architectural relief to the painting.Dueñas studied law in 1975 at the Facultad de Derecho de la Universidad de los Andes, Bogotá in Colombia. In 2011 he received a DAAD Fellowship award in Berlin, Germany. Selected exhibitions include: At Actiumand a Tribute to John McCracken, dadagalerie, Berlin, 2011; Beuys y más allá, Biblioteca Luis Ángel Arango,Bogotá; Flight, Galería Casas Riegner, Bogotá, 2009; Dentro del Espacio Expositivo, Periférico Caracas, Venezuela,2008; Hump, Galería Casas Reigner, Bogotá, 2003; and Espacio Liminal, Galería Diners, Bogotá, 2002.
