AUSTRIAN WINTERWONDERLAND<br />

7 DAY TOUR<br />

Departure: Sunday 3rd – Saturday 9th February<br />

There are few sights to rival the invigorating beauty of the snow-capped<br />

Austrian Alps and you will find no better example of Austria’s natural<br />

beauty than in the Salzkammergut region, fondly known as the Austrian<br />

Lake District. Here you will find beautiful deep blue lakes, surrounded by<br />

verdant pine-clad mountains and delightful villages <strong>with</strong> wooden houses<br />

bedecked <strong>with</strong> brightly flowered window boxes – this really is picturepostcard<br />

Austria at its best. …where better to escape the British winter?<br />

The Mohrenwirt Hotel<br />

Nestled in the beautiful Salzkammergut countryside, this locally rated 4*,<br />

family run hotel enjoys a prominent position in the centre of the village, yet<br />

only metres from the lake. Each of its modern and spacious rooms is ensuite,<br />

<strong>with</strong> satellite TV and hairdryer. The restaurant serves a delicious<br />

and diverse menu, and the hotel’s wonderful under-eaves spa is fully fitted<br />

<strong>with</strong> a sauna, solarium and gym. There is also a lift to all floors<br />

Itinerary<br />

SUNDAY – After an early departure, we leave the West Country and<br />

journey east, <strong>with</strong> a comfort stop en route, to Dover for the ferry crossing<br />

to Calais. We then continue our journey to our overnight hotel in Liege in<br />

time for evening dinner.<br />

MONDAY – After breakfast, we continue our journey through Germany<br />

into Austria and our hotel in Fuschl, where we’ll be spending the next four<br />

nights. A welcome reception <strong>with</strong> drinks awaits us before our evening<br />

meal.<br />

TUESDAY – The morning is free for you to spend as you please and<br />

explore your new surroundings <strong>with</strong> its wonderful lake and mountain<br />

views. You may like to stroll around the local shops and cafes, or make<br />

use of the hotel leisure facilities. This afternoon a horse drawn sleigh or<br />

cart ride will show you the landscape from a very different perspective.<br />

Join us if you wish after dinner this evening for a guided evening walk,<br />

followed by mulled wine.<br />

WEDNESDAY – After a leisurely breakfast we make our way to St Gilgen,<br />

a typical Austrian village, on the edge of Lake Wolfgang, and the location<br />

for the opening credits of the film The Sound of Music. You will also find<br />

Mozart's mother's house, the church where his sister was married, as well<br />

as a museum about his life. Whilst here, you may like to take a gondola<br />

cable car up to the top of the Zwölferhorn mountain,1522 metres above<br />

sea level, in just 16 minutes. During the ride you can enjoy the<br />

incomparable view of the Wolfgangsee lake, the Schafberg mountain and<br />

right into the foothills of the Alps in the neighbouring county of Upper<br />

Austria.. At the top of the cable car there is a restaurant If you’re lucky you<br />

may even catch a local musician playing folklore songs on his accordion.<br />

We continue on to St Wolfgang, a picturesque town, also on the edge of<br />

the lake <strong>with</strong> plenty of shops and restaurants to sample the local cuisine.<br />

After dinner this evening, you will be entertained <strong>with</strong> some typical<br />

Austrian zither music.<br />

THURSDAY – Today we make the short journey to the charming and<br />

elegant city of Salzburg, most famous as the birthplace of Wolfgang<br />

Amadeus Mozart, and for the classic film, the Sound of Music. Whilst here<br />

you may like to visit the Cathedral, the Mozart Museum, the Fortress, the<br />

Mirabell Palace and Gardens, or just browse the shops and enjoy a<br />

leisurely lunch. We return to our hotel in time to relax before a farewell<br />

gala dinner.<br />

FRIDAY – Sadly, we this morning bid farewell to our hotel in Austria and<br />

begin our homeward journey. With regular comfort stops en route, we<br />

return to our overnight hotel in Liege for evening dinner.<br />

SATURDAY – After breakfast, we <strong>travel</strong> back to Calais for the return ferry<br />

crossing to Dover. We continue our journey home, arriving mid/lateevening.<br />
