Sunni Herman, Executive Vice President Jewish Home at Rockleigh Connections Kesher. Connection. Every day at the Jewish Home at Rockleigh we make lasting connections. We have an extremely strong, dedicated staff and we are pleased to have added Bob Bardach to our administrative team, a caring, creative individual who has quickly bonded with residents, staff and families. Our residents connect. Whether they are assembling a blanket to give to the organization Sharsheret or they volunteer in the Gift Shop, they find meaningful ways to fill their days. The Executive Committee of our Resident Council, the “machers” in the building, continue to meet monthly and have helped form our Men’s Club and the Jersey Girls. A highlight of the year was Syril Rubin hosting a delicious luncheon for our residents in her home. Newly conducted satisfaction surveys of our long term residents have helped further focus us on ways to connect our residents. …interdisciplinary programs strengthen the relationships among the staff and the residents. A first annual, hugely successful, Employee Health and Benefit Fair, sponsored by Ronnie Aroesty and the Herb Seid Endowment, helped link staff with various health resources available to them. Staff connections were enhanced through participation in the building-wide Purim masquerade contest. Nursing helped facilitate a new iPod music program and both the recreation staff and our social workers have been helping residents during mealtimes. These interdisciplinary programs strengthen the relationships among the staff and the residents. Our staff is busy working on implementation of electronic medical records which shall help further enhance communication and connectivity to local hospitals. Our association with our families often does not end when a loved one no longer lives at the Home. They can be found chatting in Carl’s Place, enjoying the musical programs, visiting with residents and becoming volunteers and lay leaders. Our family has become their family and so they stay connected. Our connection to the community remains quite strong. Always mindful of the safety of our residents, we conducted a tabletop evacuation drill in collaboration with the local and regional fire, police, and ambulance departments. We hosted a cardiac assessment program for the community presented by Englewood Hospital’s EMS Department entitled, “Listen to Your Heart.” With funding from the Maurice Levy Memorial Nursing Fund, we opened our doors to staff from other nursing homes to learn about the new Department of Health Survey process. We have had many guest lecturers from the community at our newly formed Jewish Home University. In addition to our regularly scheduled groups who entertain, the Kaplen JCC School of Performing Arts and the Thurnauer School of Music programs performed several times for our residents. The icing on the cake was when our residents performed the play “Broadway Melodies…A World Cruise” for the seniors at the JCC. We look forward to many future joint programming activities. The American designer, Charles Eames once said “Eventually everything connects — people, ideas, objects. The quality of the connections is the key to quality, per se.” Connections made at the Jewish Home at Rockleigh increase our quality of care every day. 16
Wilson Aboudi, President Jewish Home Assisted Living Reaching the Next Level of Care and Comfort .JHAL is proud to be a part of the Jewish Home Family and consider ourselves the second generation of this charitable endeavor — those who follow our founding dreamers and builders. As the second generation we also have our dreams to build and expand the Jewish Home Family. In additions to these dreams, the second generation now has the obligation to operate and maintain the Jewish Home Assisted Living’s magnificent facility, and to attain even higher standards than those previously reached. Toward this end, Jewish Home Assisted Living has made many improvements this past year: Installation of a satellite connection that enables our residents to participate in live 92 Street Y programs, installation of an Outdoor Fitness Trail Health System enabling residents to exercise, improvements to the washing machine facilities enabling residents to be more independent, the purchase of a van for transporting our residents to personal appointments, improved lighting in event of a power failure for the safety of our residents, the development of an intern program with local colleges bringing many younger visitors into our building and the availability of enhanced hearing impairment equipment to increase participation and enjoyment of our residents during lectures and movies. Each one bring us a step closer to attaining the next level of care and comfort for our residents. This past June 24th, Jewish Home Assisted Living celebrated its Fifth Anniversary with 100 residents and family members in attendance. At this celebration, JHAL acknowledged 28 dedicated employees who have worked at the Home for the past five years. These are the employees that prepare the food and serve our residents, our aids that assist and care for residents daily, the maintenance staff that cleans and maintains the building and the recreational personnel that provide entertainment, activities and programming. All this and more could not be accomplished without our able and dedicated administrative staff lead by Executive Director Lauren Levant, Director of Sales and Marketing John Albanese, Director of Health Care Services Risa Kory, Director of Activities and Volunteer Services Julie Cochrane, Director of Social Services Nancy Ames, Director of Food Services Jean Duroseau, Director of Engineering Ron Espanola, Business Office Manager Chris Sarvis, and all the dedicated employees of Jewish Home Assisted Living that better the lives of our seniors each and every day. 17
