When crews get a bag of ice, don’t just
throw the ice bag away. Instead, use it
as the daily trash bag. This gives crews
a nice sized bag to neatly dispose of
drink containers and lunch trash. It can
then be simply tossed away in an
appropriate trash container at
the pull out or a gas station that
evening or the next morning. This
is a good habit to develop and
improves housekeeping on the truck.
Here’s a tip for the winter months when
ice and snow build up on windshields
overnight. Cut a large, heavy-duty
garbage bag in half and spread it over
the windshield. Take the corners of the
bag inside the doors. When the doors
shut they will hold the bag in place and
prevent ice and snow from building up
on the windshield, which saves a lot
of time at the pull out in the morning.
More importantly, it prevents people
from standing on icy running boards
trying to clear a windshield. Anything we
can do to prevent a slip or trip is worth
the effort.
An inexpensive tote filled with extra clothes and gloves along
with a bag for wet or dirty items keeps your things neat and organized
TIPS
Dave Ennis
Two sets of eyes are better than one. If
you are a passenger, make sure you are
keeping your eyes on the road as well.
Many situations where accidents are
prevented were credited to the passenger
noticing something that the driver
didn’t see. After all, as the passenger,
your safety depends on avoiding an
accident.
With the unpredictable weather this
time of year, keep plenty of clothes
available for changing weather conditions.
To prevent a messy stack of cloths
piled in the truck, try getting an inexpensive
tote to store your stuff in. This
will keep it neat, organized and clean,
and can be taken home easily.
In the very cold winter months, do not
allow trucks to hold woodchips over the
weekend. They certainly will freeze to the
bed and hours will be wasted digging
and picking away chips at the dump.
Ask your supervisor about getting some
RainX and using it on your mirrors and
windows. This will help prevent ice build
up. This product also improves visibility
when driving in the rain.
Always be aware of where the tail end of
your rope is when climbing. Make sure it
is not laying in mud or water. During the
winter months, if your rope gets wet, it
will freeze causing your rope to expand
and then not hold knots. If your rope
does get wet, try to hang or lay it in a
place where it will dry out. Always make
sure your rope is stored properly. After
all, it is your LIFELINE.
I would like to remind all CDL holders
how important it is to keep your driving
record clean, both on and off the job.
Speeding not only risks an accident,
but also puts you in danger of a ticket.
These violations add up quickly and you
can find your driving status in jeopardy.
It is also important to remember that if
you get any ticket, even in your personal
vehicle, you need to report it to your
supervisor within 24 hours.
When bucket crews are trimming, fold
your mirrors in to keep them from getting
hit by debris. These mirrors are very
expensive. At a cost of $428 for the
mirror and arm it is important to prevent
these mirrors from being damaged.
