Commentary<br />

At both year levels, the 2001 students performed very<br />

similarly to the 1997 students. Comparative performance<br />

on questions 3 and 4 shows that many year 4 students<br />

struggled when required to rename (carry).<br />

Commentary<br />

Year 8 students performed much better than year 4 students<br />

on multiplication tasks. There was a small improvement<br />

between 1997 and 2001 for both years: 10 percent<br />

more year 4 students got at least 3/5 correct, and 9 percent<br />

more year 8 students got at least 5/7 correct.
