c. Methodology
1. ESRI/InfoUSA Business Point Data File Enhancement
Identification of Additional Missing Business Records
GWRC staff conducted on-line searches with www.manta.com to identify business establishments located in the
region that did not appear in the supplied ESRI/InfoUSA database of 10,019 records. These searches were run at the
zip-code level, focusing primarily on outlying rural and suburban zip codes, where it was suspected that more small
establishments may exist than were reported in the ESRI/InfoUSA database.
Additional searches run for the primary, more urban zipcodes in the Region (i.e. 22401, 22407, 22408, 22551,
22553, 22554, etc) yielded far too many listings to try to enhance the database further through this laborious
process. However, for the more rural areas, this comparison and the resulting additional establishment records
created (where the www.Manta.com record provided sufficient detail to estimate the firm’s employment size,
location and business sector) added several hundred records to the database. This enhancement of the original
data became important to the subsequent employment allocation process to produce the final traffic zone-level
employment estimates by NAICS 2-digit code.
Employment Estimation for Records with No Reported Employment
(NUMBER_EMP)
In the original database of 10,019 records, 2,885 (or 28.8 percent) had 0 employment reported for the business.
However, the ESRI/InfoUSA business establishment file had 3 other key attributes useful for estimating the number
of employees working with these establishments. First, virtually all of these records had an “EMPSIZE” code,
