Environmental Justice<br />

How can we create a just environment in which people have<br />

access to clean, safe, and welcoming places to live, work,<br />

learn, play, and pray, and ecosystems, habitats, and species<br />

are conserved? Why have some communities been dispro-<br />

portionately burdened with unsafe water, polluted air, and<br />

toxic trash? What can we do to change this? These questions<br />

are at the heart <strong>of</strong> environmental justice activism and analysis<br />

and the focus <strong>of</strong> this course. Local, national, and global case<br />

studies will help students develop a thorough understanding<br />

<strong>of</strong> this movement.<br />

lobbing, and determine the relevance and potential <strong>of</strong> mean-<br />

This course is designed as an introduction to the politics <strong>of</strong><br />

international economic relations. The purpose <strong>of</strong> the course<br />

is to give you a broad theoretical and historical overview <strong>of</strong><br />

the workings <strong>of</strong> the global trade, production, monetary and<br />

financial systems, and an understanding <strong>of</strong> pressing develop-<br />

mental issues as well as the problems that confront us all<br />

today as a result <strong>of</strong> a rapidly globalizing world economy.<br />

Psychology and the Law<br />

Psychology and the Law: The role <strong>of</strong> behavioral science in<br />

the legal system. This experiential course takes advanced<br />

psychology students through exercises in courtroom roles<br />

to illustrate the psychological assumptions made by the legal<br />

system. Opposing counsel and fact providers (psychological<br />

experts, witnesses and principals in legals action) and fact<br />

deciders (judges and juries) will be represented by students.<br />

<strong>Classes</strong> will consist <strong>of</strong> moot trials where legal issues <strong>of</strong><br />

evidence and procedure that assume psychological laws<br />

(<strong>of</strong>ten misunderstood) will be investigated. Trial work, a class<br />

presentation and term paper will determine grades.<br />
