Pote’s Notes Honoring Tradition - Moving Forward Thank you. Thank you to all the Nobles and Ladies that have helped and supported us over the last 9 years. Thank you to Past Potentate Hank Paulson for seeing something in me that could help Osman Shrine. Thank you to the Nobles for your confidence in me by allowing me to be your Potentate for 2012. Thank you to my family, Joan, Katherine, Marianne, Frank IV, my aunt Evelyn, my mother-inlaw Joan Mueller, and my father-in-law John who resides with the Supreme Architect of the Universe. Over the past nine years on the Divan, I hope that I have made decisions for the betterment of Osman Shrine. I will continue to look to the future of Osman Shrine serving as your Potentate. In my journey through Freemasonry, I have been actively involved with my Lodge, Newport #118, the St. Paul Valley of the Scottish Rite, Grand Lodge of MN and Osman Shrine. Through this involvement, I have come to cherish many traditions and have defended these traditions to all parties. While these traditions are very valuable and necessary, we must recognize that we are now in the 21st century. I started messing around with computers by stealing time from the engineers where I worked in the mid 1980's. The power and ability of the computer I worked on then had less power and storage than my two-year old smart phone. But I recognized then how it could transform how I worked and In This Issue . . . Technology has leapfrogged over those 25 years with the expansion of the internet, web pages, social networking, email, video, iPhone, Android, etc. With these leaps in technology, we sometimes forget that we are humans that need real interaction with one another. Maybe that is why I have been such an advocate for the old penalties, ritual work that is delivered with meaning rather than rote memorization, welcoming a new brother or Noble to make sure that they know who they can turn to for answers and conversation. The theme for the year is Honoring Tradition - Moving Forward. We need to recognize and use those traditions that have served organized Freemasonry well for almost 300 years, while at the same time utilizing the inventions and means of the 21st century to communicate and expand our presence to the world within and without our portal. We have a lot of great activities planned for our Nobles and Ladies, as well as prospective families this year. We have a goal of 100 new Nobles for the year. To help accomplish that, we will be holding prospect parties throughout the year. We will have our first Ceremonial on February 26, which will follow our Ladies’ Appreciation Brunch. We will have a Ceremonial at this year’s Circus, on Sunday morning, Stated Meeting Minutes - 12 Club & Unit Reports - 14 January Birthdays - 21 Shriners Hospitals Report - 24 Osman Womens Auxiliary - 26 Co-Pays Q&A - 27 Daughters of the Nile - 24 Paper Supporters - 25 Calendar - 26 Children’s Holiday Party Pictures - 28 Yes, there is a Santa Claus! - 28 the first one in 9 years. We will be holding Ceremonials outside of St. Paul. There will be plenty of opportunities to show potential candidates the warm and gracious glow of Osman Shrine. We are organizing two trips in 2012 which are open for all - Nobles and Ladies and those who wish to see how much fun Osman Shrine life can be. Our first trip of the year is a traditional train trip to Chicago in antique refurbished railcars and we will stay at the Palmer House Hilton Hotel. Info on this trip is in this issue. The second trip is a Fall Leaf Hunt into Boston, Massachusetts and Maine. More on that later in the year. To help us on the Divan, I have appointed Roberto Sean Gardiner as the Outer Guard. Sean, his Lady Tracy and their son Ian helped us tremendously by taking care of cotton candy production and sales at the 2011 Circus. Sean has shown his leadership, management and ritual skills with his lodge, York Rite and Scottish Rite. Not to mention that he is a techno geek. Please welcome Sean, Tracy and Ian the next time you see them. I hope you are ready for an exciting and eventful year with Osman Shrine. I know that Joan and I are. We thank each and every Noble and their Lady for being a part of Osman Shrine and we look forward to seeing you at the next event.
