A Message from Rabbi Goldstein Mackler
. . . “Jewish Views of Stem Cell Research”
(This is an excerpt taken from Rabbi Mackler’s March 13, 2009 Sermon)
When President
Obama signed an
executive order
permitting the use of federal funds or
federally funded lab space for embryonic
stem cell research, an amazing thing
occurred: each denomination within
Judaism, and each agency in the Jewish
world spoke with one accord. From the
Orthodox Union, to the Religious
Action Center of our Union for Reform
Judaism, from the Conservative
Movement, to the Interfaith Alliance;
from B’nai Brith International to
Hadassah, from the Jewish Council on
Public Affairs to the National Council
of Jewish Women – each agency, each
movement sent out a press release
celebrating this renewed commitment to
human initiative in partnership with
God.
Eight years ago, when embryonic
stem cell research was halted on a federal
level, these groups protested with one
voice, and many agencies worked
tirelessly to garner private and state funds
to keep the research going. Scientists at
Hadassah Hospital’s Goldyne Savad
Institute of Gene Therapy were among
the first in the world to derive
embryonic stem cell lines. If the
prohibition resulted from a religious or
an ideological core, how then could all
these Jewish agencies and movements be
against it?
Clearly, there is nothing written in
the bible about Embryonic Stem Cell
research, but as you might guess, that
does not mean Jewish tradition is silent
on the matter.
From mystics to rabbis, Judaism
expresses a broad vision of the nature of
human life and of our place in the
scheme of things. Further, we bring our
own Jewish lens through which we look
at the importance of scientific and
medical work. Our understanding comes
in the first chapter of the Hebrew Bible,
“Let us make man in our image, after our
own likeness.” Every human life is sacred
and irreplaceable because each of us carries
within us a trace of God’s presence in the
world.
We may disagree with one another
and with our neighbors as to when
independent life begins, or when
ensoulment may happen, but each of us
agrees that from a person’s birth, he is
endowed with dignity and sanctity, and
his life is a gift from God on loan.
Another crucial understanding is that
Jewish ethics is classically constructed in
terms of responsibilities, duties and
obligations rather than in the language of
rights. In ethical dilemmas we are not
arguing a conflict of rights, but a conflict
of duties and responsibilities. This is

As I write this,
my first article of my
second year as
president, I am
tempted to look back at the year gone by
and reminisce about all that we have done
– our accomplishments, our challenges,
our successes and our obstacles. Then I
might look ahead and tell you of my goals
for the next year – where I hope to see
us, how we might change to improve,
what programs and classes I would like
to see happen. And I might share with
you what I have learned in the last year.
But I am not going to do that. That will
be my talk on May 8 th at our Annual
Meeting. It will begin at 6:00 p.m. and
will be followed by a congregational
dinner and services. I hope you will be
there for it!

May is also the month of two other
annual events, Post-Con graduation and
Confirmation. If you have never been
to a Post-Con graduation, I encourage
you to be at Temple on May 1 st at 5:45
p.m. (please note the change of time for
this 1 st Friday night of the month!) to
hear from our graduating seniors about
the two years they have spent debating
issues, eating pizza and learning from one
another and from their fearless teacher,
the indefatigable Alan Mazer. I have
never gone and not left with a sense of
pride in our students and the program
we offer and a feeling of optimism that
the future, as represented by these young
adults, is bright!
Confirmation will be held on
Sunday afternoon, May 3 rd . It is a lovely
service, conducted by the members of
the Confirmation class. It is always
interesting to hear from members of the
class about what Judaism means to them,
what their personal beliefs are or how they
feel about their experience at Temple.
There is great honesty and insight in these
talks and I always love listening to them.
On a personal note, this year’s
Confirmation class was the first 3 rd grade
class I taught in Religious School. (I taught
for 3 years!) I have watched these young
people grow up and am proud for them
and their families that they have reached
this wonderful occasion! Let me take this
opportunity to congratulate them all!
I hope to see you at any or all of the
events I have listed. But if I don’t, thanks
for the privilege of serving this
congregation. And thanks for your
continued support and participation!

precisely how Jews and Jewish
organizations can celebrate the prospect
of stem cell research done on preimplanted
embryos that would otherwise
be destroyed.
Simply stated, we ask, “what are our
obligations to our loved ones who suffer
from these debilitating diseases like
cancer, diabetes, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s,
and those suffering paralysis from
accidents, verses our obligations to preimplanted
embryos on their way to be
discarded?”
Judaism is quite clear on the question
of the status of embryos created in vitro,
or in a petri-dish. A pre-implanted
embryo is a form of human life, and we
therefore owe it the respect due to human
life. However, it is not a person, and our
duties to it are not those we owe persons.
As Jews we don’t view these
techniques as ‘playing God’ or ‘defying
God’s will.’ Instead, we celebrate having
been given the gift of being able to

understand and discern. Indeed, we come
to know, love and respect God precisely
by deepening our understanding of
creation.
Inasmuch as the Torah gives
physicians the mandate to heal, the
Jewish value of pikuach nefesh teaches
further that preserving life and promoting
health are among the most precious of
our responsibilities. Our tradition
requires that we pursue advances in science
and medicine that have the potential to
save and enhance lives, and that “when
one delays in doing so, it is as if he has
shed blood” (Shulchan Aruch, Yorei
De’ah 336:1).
Moreover, it is one thing to find
meaning in suffering, another to accept
it when it can be prevented. Stem cell
research and the prospect, however
distant, of treating genetic disease is a
momentous enhancement of human
dignity.
We realize that every technology
carries with it the possibility of
diminishing or enhancing human dignity,
depending on how we use it. The strength
of a civilization lies not only in its ability
to conquer opposition, but also in its
ability to practice self-restraint: in what it
can do but chooses, for ethical reasons,
not to do. So we ask: Will we focus on
eradicating degenerative diseases, or will
we allow vanity to encourage cosmetic
eugenics? Will we fight to ensure these
potential treatments are accessible to all,
regardless of status or station in life?
What all our Jewish organizations and
agencies and denominations said recently
in the name of our ancient and influential
faith, is that there is religious value in
much of the scientific and medical work
currently being done. May a time soon
come when we will see this greatness
enhance our lives, relieve suffering and
offer a refuah shlemah – a complete
healing for all people.

upcoming marriage of their daughter Marcia to Justin Segal, son of
Dr. and Mrs Neil Segal of Denver, Colorado. Marcia is the

Dear Students and Parents,
In the blink of an eye the end of our Religious School year is here. I am so
grateful to our staff and to all of you for your support and commitment to
Jewish learning. This year we have looked at repairing ourselves in the context
of repairing the world. We have learned this on so many levels, many we will hear about on our final day of
Religious School. In addition we have watched with pride as our students gained, not only basic Jewish
knowledge, but began to connect our history and traditions with their own family history and traditions.
On May 1 st thirteen students will graduate from our Post Confirmation Program. This represents close to
50% of our students who voluntarily continue their Jewish education following Confirmation. On May 3 rd ,
we will celebrate the Confirmation of our 2009-5769 class of twenty-eight students. Most of these students
also celebrated their Consecration together some ten years ago. For the past twenty-five years I have watched
our Religious School grow and blossom. I have watched Cantor Gutcheon teach Hebrew to over 500
students. This year, in particular, I am extremely proud, grateful and humbled to be part of this Congregation
– its history, its traditions, and its educational process.
I hope you all have a wonderful summer. I look forward to seeing you next September as we
celebrate The Year of Heroes.

It was a very good year . . .

As we prepare for our Pre-Kindergarten graduation (May 13 th at 7:00 p.m.) and our Shalom Picnic
(May 17 th 4:00-6:00 p.m.), it is only natural that we look back and realize what a challenging and revolutionary
year this has been. We have a new president of our country, a new director for our school and many new
staff members. We have welcomed additional families to our school.
Our parents and teachers have struggled to make choices for their children in an economic crisis.
Indeed, it has not been an easy year, yet through our hardships we have come together. In November we had
our first family Shabbat; we co-hosted our first Kindergarten forum with Blakemore Children’s Center. We
attended picnics, went out to dinner and gathered together just to talk. When one of our staff members
became ill, another volunteered to stay and work in her place. When new siblings were born, the parent
committee ordered meals for the entire family. When children were ill, phone calls and cards were made.
The Temple Playschool has always been about community, pulling together and making things work.
In unsettling times such as these it is comforting to know that we have been there for each other.
Looking back, I can see that so many people have helped us achieve new heights. First of all, our
teaching staff was exceptional. Opportunities to learn new ideas and broaden our children’s focus were
made through field trips, presidential elections, the Olympics, Earth day, and Mitzvah Weeks. We even
added a Rock ‘N Roll class for our older children in the afternoons. The parent advisory board and parent
committee under Karen Shaffer and Erin Herbst were both incredible. They worked constantly for our
school, ready to offer sound advice and provide parent support. Senior staff and office staff were always there
to offer guidance and help with budgetary and overall problems. Our Playschool office staff worked extra
hours to make sure that all of our bills were paid, and events from carnivals to seder were organized and
ready to go.
We are indeed fortunate in this transition year to be surrounded by people who care about each
other. It is an honor to come to work every day.
