Rest, Reect, Renew
Last month, three dozen women gathered at the Drouillard
house for our Women’s Retreat to Rest, Re ect and Renew. With help
from the Sisterhood Women’s Fund, we were able to subsidize the cost
of the weekend and to offer scholarships to those who needed it.
This year we had record numbers –36 – double Chai - and
we truly felt a new life, a reinvigorated spirit and renewed sense of
community this weekend. I did not lead this retreat alone; several
Rabbi Mackler incredible and talented women joined with me in programming.
At Shabbat services, Jan Huettner and her daughter (4 th year
Rabbinical Student) Jessica Rosenthal, helped lead our creative service. Voices joined together to
create a warm sense of Shabbat, and together, we called my grandmother as I do every Shabbat,
to light candles over the phone.
Over the weekend, connections grew among our group. Lifelong Temple members
reached out to newer ones. Women who had attended each of the ve past retreats became
friends with women who were attending their rst. Mothers and daughters (and daughtersin-law)
came on the retreat together. Friends were reacquainted and new relationships were
developing. This group was a beautiful mosaic of our community, lled with varied experiences
and talents.
One of our rst activities was led by Pat Halper. In a writing exercise, we shared where
“I come from.” Our homes, era, music, families, all created who we are, and we shared a glimpse
of ourselves through ve simple sentences. We were touched and moved by each other’s stories;
we laughed, and nodded in agreement; we sighed and quietly remembered our own stories.
Soon the laughter really began. Jennifer Fleischer, a hoola hooping teacher and halfmarathoner,
brought out her hoops and the bravest of the brave began to move. One after
another, women joined in this hilarious workout of our spirits and our bodies! This was an
activity that brought smiles to everyone!
Many began Shabbat morning with yoga, led by Julie Simpson, as we stretched, and
moved, reminding ourselves of the precious gift of our lives, the miracles of our bodies, and the
opportunities we must take to recharge ourselves. Jessica Rosenthal led our Torah study, where
we dived into the challenges Moses faced as he was called to lead the Israelites. We re ected on
challenges of self-doubt, self-awareness, our own limitations and the need and blessing of having
support – as Moses had Aaron to help him lead, so too could we lean on our families friends and
community. Each woman contributed to our Torah study a gem of insight.
On Shabbat afternoon, we took a walk in a labyrinth Pam Harrison shared with us. We
learned that many religions, including Judaism, used these winding paths as ways to reconnect,
focus and celebrate. At our Seudah Sh’lisheet (our 3 rd Sabbath meal and learning), we celebrated
an early Tu b’Shvat, the festival of the trees, taking time to appreciate the natural world and
remembering our duty to protect it. Hoola Hooping and Tai Chi (led by Jani Kendy), mah jongg
and rest pervaded the afternoon.
As Shabbat ended, our art project had us making a mosaic from broken shards of glass.
Like the broken rst set of 10 Commandment Tablets that traveled with the second, intact set,
we understand that we are made up of different parts and carry with us pieces from our past
that we create into something new and whole. Under the guidance of Ceci Sachs, these ladies
created beautiful glass images we took home to remind each of us of the beauty of the weekend.
Through it all, there was of course, more laughter. Truth be told, it was often sidesplitting,
tear producing, gulping breathed laughter. You could hear it throughout the weekend,
whether you were in that room or not; it was delightfully infectious.
This retreat more than any other was inclusive of so many talents and skills of so many
women. From the staff support of Nancy Richardson, Mitzie Russell and Kathy Smeitana in the
of ce, to each woman who helped lead and participate in the weekend, it all came together
as we came together. Weekends and retreats like these encourage us to be what Jews are: a
community focused on solidarity, not solitude. I, for one, cannot wait for the next retreat!
Get on Board
January was an exciting month for your Temple with three special programs for our Jewish
Community. This year we were happy to have West End Synagogue join us in co-sponsoring a
three-part lecture series with Dr. Amy-Jill Levine. As part of our Adult Education program, we were
pleased to have Rabbi Rami Shapiro lead us in a two-seminar series on Jewish meditation practices.
Last, Rabbi Shana Mackler led a group of 36 women on the 6 th Biennial Women’s Retreat held at the
Drouillard House in Cumberland Furnace, Tennessee.
Through our Social Action Allocation process, we are proud to have recently funded twelve
Randy Goldstein
agencies, donating in total $15,000. The money for these allocations comes from the Kuhn and
Buchman Social Action Funds. During our Social Action Shabbat on January 13 th , we had a chance to recognize these
agencies & hear about all the important work they do in our community. I would like to thank Carol Fradkin, Social
Action Chair and Ann Gilbert, Allocations Chair for all their efforts.
I am pleased to inform you that our Temple Preschool has received its 3-star rating from the Department of
Human Services. Annually the DHS inspects our Preschool operations. The inspection covers all aspects of our preschool
program. I would like to thank Corye Nelson, Jan Huettner and our entire Preschool staff for all their work.
Once again, as part of outreach we will work with the Gordon JCC on Shabbat Services, dinners and programs in
the outlying communities with emerging Jewish populations. We will also continue to partner with the Jewish Federation
and Vanderbilt’s Hillel on the “Next Generation Engagement.” I hope by now you have had a chance to meet Joel
Abramson, the Young Adult Outreach Coordinator.
Please mark you calendar for this year’s Temple Arts Festival on April 21 st and 22 nd . We will once again turn our
Temple into an art gallery as we welcome artists from around the country. Your TAF Committee has been busy at work.
Many volunteers are needed and I hope you will say yes when asked to work and support your Temple. It’s a great way
to meet people while helping make this year’s Arts Festival another successful event.
It is that time of the year when the Nominating Committee begins to look to nominate the next slate of Board
Trustees. These positions will be voted on during the Annual Meeting held on May 4 th . Please call Patty Marks, Chair, if
you have someone you would like to recommend to the committee.
Finally, we are continuing to work on closing out this year’s Annual Giving campaign. If you haven’t done so, please
return your pledge card to The Temple. Your annual commitment enables our Temple to offer the many various programs
and services for our congregation. We hope you will consider increasing your commitment.
Please join us on a trip to Israel for returnees & for rst-timers.
Cantorial Search Committee
By Patty Marks
The Cantor Search Committee has been very busy.
After receiving applications and narrowing down the eld
of candidates, the committee has been conducting telephone
interviews and listening to music submitted by prospective
cantors. We are happy to report that at this time we have plans
to host a candidate for consideration. She will be coming to
Nashville in late January to meet the committee and other lay
leaders of the congregation. She will be auditioning for the
committee, as well as leading us in a service. The committee is
working on nalizing plans for this candidate’s visit.
In the meantime, we want to let you know that the
Letter of Variance that the committee submitted to the Joint
Cantorial Placement Commission has been accepted. This
means that our Placement Application will be made available
to newly graduating cantorial students. While that class is
not a large one, it is still exciting to be able to open up the
eld of applicants to this group. With this variance, there will,
no doubt, be an increase in work for the committee. But it is
work that we are all eager to take on!
This continues to be a fantastic committee. Jessica
and I are grateful for the generous way they share their talents
and time. They are dedicated, enthusiastic and committed to
the important task at hand.
Social Action Allocation Highlight:
Court Appointed Special
Advocates (CASA)
Every year, over 2000 children come to the
attention of our community courts. Through no fault of
their own, their lives are at a crucial turning point that
will determine their future. CASA volunteers give those
children a voice.
CASA was established in 1983 and is the
only organization authorized by the Tennessee Code
annotated to provide this service. When a CASA
volunteer is involved, children are more likely to stay
out of the child welfare system, are more likely to stop
continually moving from foster home to foster home,
and are more likely to be adopted.
CASA requested funding to provide trained
community volunteers to advocate for the best interest
of children who come to the attention of the Juvenile
Court primarily as a result of abuse and neglect.
Teaching and Learning Between
Congregants and Students - A Big Hit
As we begin a new secular year, we are ever mindful of our blessings and are grateful for
those who touch our lives in The Temple community. It has been gratifying to watch our students interact with so
many of our different groups here at Temple. We are looking forward to this continued interaction throughout
the year.
9 th graders meet with Dr. Bob Miller and two of the
medical students who work at Shade Tree.
Shade Tree is a free medical clinic in East Nashville, Started
by Dr. Miller and Dr. Lefkowitz, for our Temple community.
Kindergarten families create a Jewish Growth Chart
to record special events in their lives.
9 th and 10 th graders
meet with some of
the members of Lunch
with the Rabbi to
discuss current events.
Nursery families come together to
create special Shabbat Bags which
included a challah, challah board,
challah cover, candle sticks and
kiddush cup. They are all ready
to celebrate shabbat each week.
3 rd graders make their own
Chanukah candles to celebrate
Chanukah this year.
The Temple Preschool recently received notice
from the Tennessee Department of Human Services
that the school achieved a “3-Star” rating on its annual
assessment. This accomplishment has been achieved
consistently since the inception of the environmental
rating scale program began in 2001. The star quality child
care program is a voluntary process that recognizes child
care agencies that exceed required licensing requirements
and provide information to parents about child care. It
is designed to improve the quality of providers in the
state of Tennessee. The agencies that are evaluated
receive a rating of zero, one, two or three stars based on
seven components: director quali cations, professional
development, developmental learning, parent/family
involvement, ratio and group size, staff compensation, and
program assessment.
The school’s program assessment took place in
November and two classrooms were picked out of a hat
to begin the assessment process. One classroom was
chosen from an older group of children (2 1/2 to 5 years
of age), and the other was selected from an infant/toddler
base. Our Preschool Shalom classroom was selected and
the Early Childhood Environmental Rating Scale (ECERS)
was used to evaluate the environment, including space and
program, and to also score the interpersonal features that
directly affect the children and adults in that classroom.
Many different factors determine the assessor’s scores
and the following program strengths were recorded with
a perfect score: indoor space, furniture for routine care,
play and learning, space for gross motor play, greeting
and departure, safety practices, encouraging children
to communicate, using language to develop reasoning
skills, informal use of language, ne motor activities,
art, music/movement, sand/water, dramatic play, nature/
science, math/number concepts, promoting acceptance
of diversity, general supervision of children (other than
gross motor), staff-child interactions, interactions among
children, schedule, free play, group time and child related
display. Also receiving strong marks were the following
categories: health practices, discipline, furnishings for
relaxation and comfort, room arrangement for play, books
and pictures, blocks, and supervision of gross motor
activities. The two teachers in the Shalom classroom are
Kia Caldwell and Patricia Guardado.
The second classroom chosen was our Neshamah
class. The children in that room range in age from 12
months to 16 months of age. Perfect scores for that
classroom included the following: indoor space, provision
for relaxation and comfort, room arrangement, greeting/
departing, nap, safety practices, helping children understand
language, active physical play, art, dramatic play, nature/
science, promoting acceptance of diversity, supervision of
play and learning, staff-child interaction, and schedule. Top
scores were also awarded in the categories of display for
children, using books, ne motor, music and movement,
discipline, free play, health practices, peer interaction, and
furniture for routine care and play. The two teachers in
that classroom are Emma Shraybman and Suhad Muse.
The Temple Preschool received the highest
cumulative program scores we have ever received.
Congratulations to the staff, children, parents and
administration for a job well done. It takes a tremendous
amount of energy and dedication to receive a 3-star
rating every year; however, to earn such strong scores
in the environmental rating scales is a tribute and an
accomplishment worth celebrating.
