Marriage Equality...A Civil Rights Issue
In June, Rabbi Schiftan and I had the honor and privilege of officiating
at the first same-sex wedding that took place at The Temple. We felt blessed to
celebrate with that newest Jewish couple to stand under the chupah. A few weeks
before, I shared these comments about why marriage equality is a value we uphold
and honor as Reform Jewish Clergy.
…Tonight I stand with the CCAR (our Rabbinic Union), the Union for Reform
Judaism, The Religious Action Center, Hadassah, and over 2000 other religious
leaders of different faiths in support of Marriage Equality.
Rabbi Mackler Whereas I maintain each person’s right to their individual religious beliefs,
as a rabbi, I take issue with the rationale given against same-sex marriage,
particularly when the Bible is used as prooftext. Since Vice President Biden articulated his beliefs about
Marriage Equality, through President Obama’s reiteration and the coverage of the overwhelming passing
of the ban on same sex marriage and civil unions in North Carolina, We have been bombarded with
comments and commentaries that have run the gamut from misinformed to shameful. And to see the
supporters of the ban in NC celebrate their victory by eating wedding cake, I found the ugly display to be
hateful and hurtful. Not the best expression of their believed superior religious morality. (Neither were
the more recent remarks about quarantining gays and lesbians.)
I believe in the separation of church and state, and that this does not have to be a religious
issue at all. Americans have the option of a civil secular wedding. But it has been brought into the realm
of religion. To be honest, I am tired of our texts being used to promote that which is anathema to our
understanding of our faith. As a believer, I wish I had a pulpit big enough and a microphone loud enough
to beg the question of those who want traditional Biblical marriage to be the law for all time: Really? In
the Bible, Marriages are described between Man and Woman, A man , a woman and concubines, Man and
woman and a woman and woman, An attacker/rapist and his victim, a man and his dead brother’s wife, A
soldier and a prisoner of war, and a man and his slave. You want all of these Biblical examples of legitimate
and legislated marriages to be legal and warranted today?
Four years ago, I argued the Reform Jewish position in opposition to Proposition 8 in California.
At that time, as in this year, a number of Orthodox Rabbis and Catholic Priests had expressed their support
to ban same-sex marriages primarily based on the inability for these couples to naturally have children.
By their narrow definition of marriage, centered primarily on procreation, any heterosexual couples that
cannot conceive their own child are not really married either. They cannot create a family and reproduce
themselves “according to [the] natural order”, so infertile couples should not be considered married. And
by this definition as well, any couple that chooses not to have children should not be able to reap the
benefits of marriage either.
Insinuating that a homosexual couple creates a family that is less stable than a heterosexual
couple is bigoted and misinformed. It is curious that this coalition chose to bring up instability, knowing
well full the high rate of divorce and instability in heterosexual marriages. Still, there is no evidence, real
scientific evidence, of higher levels of separation, or instability in same-sex unions. And if it was the “duty
of the state” to ensure that stability, the state should have acted long ago to make sure people who are
not compatible do not enter into any sort of agreement with one another.
It is true: it takes matter from a male and a female to make a baby. What is understated is that it
does not necessarily take a male and female to rear a baby – many homosexual couples raise wonderful
stable children every single day. I should know. I am one of those children. But marriages are more than
just coupling for the sake of procreation. There are social, economic and health benefits of that legalized
sanctified commitment.
Understanding that for many this may be a semantic issue, that same-sex couples can have civil
unions, but using the word “marriage” is an affront to some, This argument can quickly turn hate-filled and
worrisome. The truth is, society will not fall apart if you recognize another’s rights, if you acknowledge that
pushing boundaries does not dilute your faith but strengthens it. Marriage is not a commodity or value that
diminishes when more people participate.
Anti-gay sentiment is the last legitimate bigotry available, legislated and legalized. Children have
died from this sort of bullying and painful hateful environment. And knowing our own Jewish history, how
is it possible, then, for us to say nothing? With the passing of Prop 8 in California from the narrowest of
margins, my dear friend who is in a gay relationship, a father of an adopted child, responded: Now I guess
someone else has to sit in the back of the bus.” This is more than a religious issue. This is a civil rights
issue.
It is a civil rights issue primarily because people, all people who are consenting adults, should
be afforded the civil secular right to marry the person they choose – and they should be afforded
Get on Board
The Temple, through its volunteers, does much that we sometimes take for granted. The Book of
Remembrance, our annual memorial book, is a good example. Many people assist in its preparation, and
before it reaches our Yizkor Service on Yom Kippur, there is considerable labor and love that go into its
creation.
By now, you should have received your letter from the Memorial Book Committee inquiring about this
year’s edition. If you have not participated in the past, I encourage you to do so this year.
Ray Berkt The idea for our Book of Remembrance originated with Dr. Irwin Eskind. During his tenure as president of
our congregation, he asked Mayora Ross to put together a memorial book. Mayora embraced the idea, and she
and her many volunteers turned Dr. Eskind’s suggestion into the book that exists today. When Mayora died in 2006, Betsy Chernau
and Sally Wolfe, both of whom worked on the book, took over responsibility for its publication.
Through the years, the Book of Remembrance has generated hundred of thousands of dollars for our Temple, which has
been nice. But the Memorial Book is about something much more important than money. It is about an intangible that cannot be
calculated in dollars. It is about us, and those who are no longer with us.
Its pages offer a vivid contrast between the present and past. We recall people whom we knew, and those we never met.
Among those we honor are individuals who gave their lives for our country. We also honor those who died during the darkest
period of our history, Jews from distant lands whose names are forgotten. Although we may not know their identity, or know about
their lives, we honor them and say Kaddish in their memory.
I’m not from Nashville, and I am unfamiliar with most of the people who are being remembered. Still, I carefully examine
each page, look at each donor’s name and the name of the person being remembered, and think about the connection between the
individuals.
I wonder about the lives of those being remembered. Did they live a long and full life, and experience the joy of loved ones?
Were they successful in their work? Did things come easy, or was their life marked by difficulty? Could the individual have been a
young child, whose potential was never realized? I don’t know the answers to these questions, but I continue to wonder.
What I do know is that each name represents a life, and regardless of the person’s age or accomplishments, that life
had an impact on someone else’s life. There is a story for each person. Although we may not know the story, the person who is
remembering does, and that is what is important.
Each year, my mother’s name is listed in our memorial book. No one in our congregation knew my mother. She never lived
in Nashville, and she died before we moved here. Her name in the memorial book has little, if any, significance for those at The
Temple. But when I see my mother’s name, it opens a window into her life, and her memory fills my heart and mind with much
emotion.
I don’t know what others experience when they see the names of their loved ones, but for me, my mother’s name evokes
a feeling of great sadness at her loss, but also memories of love and happiness. I remember my mother at different stages of my life,
and always picture her holding my children.
I know that some people don’t feel comfortable listing a loved one’s name in the Book of Remembrance, and that’s okay.
We all remember loved ones in different ways, and the means we use to remember is not as important as the remembering itself.
This year, for the first time, I am adding the names of my grandparents and most of my aunts and uncles to the memorial
book. I don’t know why I haven’t included them in the past. Each year I think about it, but I’ve never done it.
When I see their names in the Book of Remembrance this year, when I think of their stories, the picture I see will be
incomplete. I don’t know much about them - they all died at relatively young ages, long before I was born. The oldest of my
grandparents died at age 51, the others died while in their 40’s, and my aunts and uncles were just children.
I know the names of the places where most of my relatives died, but not the dates of their deaths. There are no grave
markers to examine, no photographs to view, and no personal belongings to touch. Their physical presence has been erased from
history, and only their names remain.
The fact that the picture is incomplete will not matter. When I see their names, the love that I will feel, and the sorrow that
I will experience, are what will count. And just like when I see the names of people I know nothing about, I will wonder, wonder
about my family, and wonder about what might have been.
I am grateful that our Temple has a memorial book, and I appreciate the many volunteers who create it. I think that those
we remember would be pleased that we keep them in our thoughts. And while it is good that we remember them, I know that they
would want us to focus on the present, and live our lives in such a way that we make the future a better place for all.
The Temple is one of 20 Reform Jewish
congregations in North America selected to receive the
Union of Reform Judaism’s 2012 Incubator Grant, out of
more than 160 applicants.
The Union for Reform Judaism’s Incubator Grant
provides seed funding for innovative new programs designed
to further engage current members and attract new
members in Reform Jewish synagogue life. Applicants had
to demonstrate that their programming would stimulate
thinking in one of three focus areas: 1.) to create a culture
that supports and encourages conversion; 2.) retention and
engagement of post b’nei mitzvah teens and their families;
and, 3.) engagement in synagogue life, including recruitment
of potential members, integration of recent members and
retention of current members.
The Temple focused its grant application on creating
a culture that supports and encourages conversion. It will
use its $5,000 grant to expand and improve upon its pilot
program, “Conversion Conversations,” an introduction to
Judaism for non-Jews who are somewhere on their path
toward Judaism. The program began years ago as individual
study with Rabbi Shana R. Mackler, The Temple’s associate
rabbi, and has developed into a year-long, 11-session, group
curriculum.
“With this financial help, The Temple is now poised for
development into a solid and robust, identity and group
The Temple Awarded URJ Incubator Grant For Our
sustaining, conversion program,” said Rabbi Mackler.
“This year’s programming will deliver an in-depth
exploration of Judaism through rabbinic teaching, chevrutah
study, hands-on workshops, ritual practice & worship,
festival celebrations, and a cultural field trip, providing the
opportunity for those seeking to learn more about Judaism
to grow as a group and continue on their individual journey
toward becoming Jewish,” she said.
“Conversion Conversations has developed into
a nurturing way to strengthen our Temple as a welcoming
home for those whose religion is not Judaism and are
exploring conversion,” said Rabbi Mackler. “For those
unfamiliar to Judaism and Jewish worship, coming to a
Temple is often an intimidating experience. We aspire to
create an affinity, a bond among this growing group as they
transition to a sense of comfort and belonging.”
The Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) will collect
information from all grantees and share noteworthy
practices with member congregations.
“We are thrilled to offer these grants to member
congregations for a second year,” said URJ President Rabbi
Rick Jacobs. “We saw how much the grant process inspired
creativity last year, and were impressed with the results
of each of the award-winning initiatives. Together, we are
developing and learning innovative ways to engage people
in Reform Jewish life.”
New Chapel Torah Crowns
The Beautification Committee was charged with
finding Torah Crowns (Rimonim) for the two Torahs
in the Chapel. We carefully
researched the work of five
outstanding artists and are
delighted with our selection
of work by the artist, Ludwig
Wolpert.
Wolpert is the same
artist who created our
beautiful, bronze Shabbat
candelabra. And, he was
the first artist to integrate
Hebrew lettering with
ceremonial objects. The Chapel candelabra has
stylized Hebrew letters from Psalm 95: “O come,
let us sing unto the Lord. Let us shout for joy to
the Rock of our salvation”.
The new sterling silver Torah crowns were
cast in Portugal and are part of a limited edition from the
by Betty Lee Rosen, Beautification Chair
artist. The top of the crown is shaped like a pomegranate-
--a fruit that symbolizes life. The pomegranate fruit has
a natural crown shape at the top which becomes a
beautiful finishing touch for the piece.
A single rose-colored carnelian bell hangs from
the center. Carnelian is a brownish-red mineral which
is commonly used as a semi-precious
gemstone. The Hebrew lettering in the
top of the crown reads: “For from out
of Zion will come the Torah, and the
word of Adonai from Jerusalem.”
The new Torah crowns were
dedicated at Shabbat services on March
23, 2012. We are grateful to our donors
for making this purchase possible: The
Jonathan Kroser Family, the families of
Dianne Gilbert and Sandy Ginsberg and
the Confirmation Class of 2011. We
look forward to enjoying these beautiful
Jewish works of art for many years to come.
Religious School
by Lynda Gutcheon
Dear Friends,
hAve you registered your child For religious
school yet???? If not, please call our office and we will
send you the information so you can register online.
We are busy planning for the upcoming school
year. We are excited about all the new and interesting
programs and activities we will be offering. This year we
celebrate The Year of Honoring our Mothers and Fathers.
This verse, taken from the Book of Exodus, expresses the
principle that neither our social order nor our own lives
can endure unless we emphasize the centrality of the
home in which parents are honored and respected. It is
interesting to note that the Hebrew word for parents is
Horim which means “teaches”. Our hope is that we will
discover and re-discover the importance and the impact
our parents have on our lives and just how much they
have taught us. Each grade will participate in a special
project around this theme. We then hope to share those
projects with all of you.
Our faculty continues to work hard to prepare
for the upcoming year. We are grateful to have a devoted
staff, all of whom take seriously their roles in teaching the
next generation.
I look forward to seeing all of you on Sunday,
September 9 th . In the meantime, I hope you are having a
restful and pleasant summer.
Summertime at the Preschool
Summer is in full swing at the Preschool. Water
play, gardening, picnics, and field trips are included in the
curricula as we take advantage of what nature has to
offer. We are incorporating opportunities to learn about
shells, rocks, dirt and sand sculptures into our lesson
plans on these longer days--as well as reflections on
the summer Olympics. Mr. Bond, the science guy, will be
here with a new, expanded science show entitled, “Mr.
Bond’s Big Adventure”, on Wednesday, July 11 th . Always
an entertaining and educational program, we invite all
families to come for this event at 9:45 a.m.
Preschool
by Corye Nelson & Jan Huettner
On July 27 th , the preschool will close so that our
teachers can prepare for their new classrooms in the Fall
Session, and for teacher in-service training. This year we
will once again meet with the Gordon JCC and Temple
Micah Children’s Center for an afternoon of learning and
inspiration as we recharge our batteries for the upcoming
school year.
Have a wonderful summer! The pictures below
can attest that at Temple Preschool we are enjoying every
minute.

A Lasting Legacy
As you think about your estate planning, please
remember The Temple. We welcome and
appreciate all gifts, regardless of the size.
Your gift to The Temple will help ensure our
every benefit and responsibility therein. There
is nothing more offensive than debasing an
entire population by stereotype and fear.
Shame on the people who ask, “what’s to
stop the fall on the slippery slope from these
unions to marriages between a person and a
dog.” How is such an absurd suggestion any
less bigoted than the signs that once read
“No Jews, No Blacks, No Dogs?” We should
know better than to let that fear, or the fear
of gay parenting, to rear its ugly head. My
father’s partner and he effectively reared two
heterosexual basically-well-adjusted stable
children into professional productive caring
and compassionate conscientious adults. My
father and his partner have been together
almost as long as my parents were married;
and now, finally, they have been able to take
a small legal step together and registered
with their county as Domestic Partners. But
those limited legal benefits are no match for
the injustice and prejudice that awaits them
outside that small radius of their hometown.
I am personally and religiously
offended by those who become fear-mongers
and disrupters for their own agendas, twisting
the truth and allowing bigotry, hate and
prejudice to pervert faith, religion, love and
equality. If we truly believe each individual was
created in the image of the Divine, we should
know better than to disparage those walking
breathing loving divine images.
If clergy feel pressure to officiate at
these ceremonies, they should not perform
them. And, if clergy choose not to officiate at
a same-sex marriage, so be it. If they want to
declare religious ceremonies as out-of-bounds,
so be it. Inside their churches and synagogues
and mosques, religious leaders can and should
decide where they stand and how they practice.
But to legislate this narrow religious view as
civil law and license is an affront to those of
us who are religious and who do not see the
world and our fellow human beings as less than
whole and deserving.
Stripped of all religious sentiments
and concerns, no matter how one feels about
homosexuality, we cannot deny the reality that
these laws, these frightening amendments and
propositions are systematically removing civil
rights. And that is what needs to be fought.
Even as we are fighting as a country to not
become economically bankrupt, we should not
allow ourselves to be morally bankrupt as well.
In his Second Inaugural Address Abraham
Lincoln says, “Those who deny freedom to
others, deserve it not for themselves, and
cannot long retain it.”
Many people are discomfited by
our changing and evolving world. The first
Jew, Abraham, had to break from all that was
familiar to him in order to be the father of a
new nation. The basis of that new society was to
be justice, compassion and social responsibility.
Our whole faith is predicated on Abraham’s
evolving actions out in the world and in his
own tent. Abraham took the first step on this
journey, the journey we are still on, as the seed
of a new people whose values are rooted in
justice and righteousness. Our journey must
be a combination of justice personally and
politically. When we genuinely work to increase
justice and righteousness in our own lives, we
also cultivate these values externally; when we
actively address global and communal issues,
we set the stage for developing just personal
lives. All of these actions intertwined help us
be that light, be that blessing.
