OPERATOR PROFILE PATRICK CARRIÈRE: BOLD STEPS LEAD TO A SUCCESSFUL CAREER PATH s Supervisor at the City of Cornwall Wastewater Treatment Plant, Patrick Carrière has reached a milestone in the career he chose while he was still in high school. “A representative from the community college came in to do a presentation on environmental science and it piqued my curiosity,” he recalls, adding that after graduation, he enrolled at La Cité Collégiale. “The program included a broad range of environmental topics, but the one that caught my attention was the water and wastewater side.” But when he completed college in 1994, the Ontario Government was cutting many of its environmental programs and there were few positions. He found himself in a Catch 22, requiring work experience to get a job but unable to get a job to gain that experience. Undeterred, Carrière devoted two weeks of holidays from his non-water related job to volunteer at the Alexandria Water Treatment Plant and get his name in the system. “Three or four months later, there was an opening and I got the job,” he notes. “I started working there and I’ve been working in water and wastewater ever since.” While at Alexandria, he worked in water treatment and water distribution and, after the amalgamation that created North Glengarry Waterworks, in wastewater collection and wastewater treatment as well. During that time, he studied hard to obtain his certification as an operator in all four areas. He also went to school in the evenings to complete a millwright course. “I did that to become a better operator,” he explains. He then accepted a position at the WTP in Cornwall, eventually transferring to the maintenance department in the WWTP in order to increase his experience and obtain the necessary hours for his millwright certification. Carrière continued to work in maintenance at the WWTP until an opening for a supervisor position became available. “With a little bit of luck and some hard work, I was able to get to where I am now,” he reflects. “Every day brings a different challenge. You are continually adapting so you can produce the best effluent water. With proper monitoring and sampling you can be proactive and stay one step ahead of any changes occurring in the process.” “I’ve always had a great team to work with throughout my career,” he adds. “Together we have been able to work through any operational challenge.” Along with daily operations, Carrière has also enjoyed the challenges that have come with the expansion of the Cornwall WWTP. The project has revolved around the addition of a biological aerated filter system (BAF) for secondary treatment, one of only a few such systems in the province. “I was lucky enough to be involved from design to implementation,” he says, noting that the upgrade should be completed this fall. “We’ve been working on this for many years.” I’ve always had a great team to work with throughout my career. Together we have been able to work through any operational challenge. During that time, Carrière participated in a ‘friendly fines’ fundraising program. To promote punctuality, participants on the project were fined a dollar for every minute they arrived late to any meeting and conference call. In addition anyone who had a phone that rang during a meeting was fined $10. All proceeds were donated to the Agape Centre, an organization devoted to fighting hunger in the community. “It worked great,” recalls Carrière. “When we first started, we did collect some money. But very soon every meeting was starting on time and we rarely had distractions from phones ringing.” He adds that most of the $2,790 raised was due to donations. In the past, he has also given his time to the community as a soccer coach and volunteer fire fighter. Now that his daughters are older, most of his spare time is devoted to driving them to their sport activities. His work at the WWTP keeps him very busy the rest of the time. The plant is currently working toward substantial completion after which the focus will be on process optimization. “I am still very caught up in getting this plant up and running,” he says, adding that the goal is to produce the best quality effluent possible. “I am very lucky to work in Cornwall with such a good team and great support.” 70 INFLUENTS Fall 2015 Click HERE to return to Table of contents
