Soazig Kaam PHOTOGRAPHED BY MICHAEL MOORE DIRECTED BY ROBERT SILVER HAIR & MAKEUP BY BONICE HALVERSON Soazig Kaam is a PhD student in Architecture and Building Sciences at the University of California, Berkeley. While she is persuing engineering studies, she has always been interested in artistic design. At 10, she started to sell her colections of handbags and jewelry at school. In fall 2011, she discovered the student-run non-profit association FAST (Fashion and Student Trends) at UC Berkeley and designed her first collection for FAST fashion show under her brand Ponée Ka. Born and raised in France with Cameroonian parents, Soazig grew up with the influence of these cultures she likes to blend in her designs. She associates African fabrics (Wax, Kente, Ankara, Bazin) with European inspired shapes and designs. Her latest collection, Negatives, proposes retrospective but also new perspectives in her Euro-Africano designs. Mixing of angles and viewpoints, the collection reverses colors and expectation. Soazig draws her inspiration from a role model, the woman she is inspired to become. The designs are not intended for African women only. Rather, the brand wants to speak for all cosmopolitan women with the desire of defining themselves as fashion-conscious, independent, confident, and self-aware women.
