how they plan to continue developing the college and career readiness skills.<br />

Consult with local special educators and family advocacy organizations to identify and<br />

address potential barriers that may impede some students’ successful participation<br />

in career development programs and activities (e.g. inaccessible or inappropriate<br />

assessment instruments to determine eligibility to participate, capacity to access<br />

materials required to develop ePortfolios, or ability to access work-based learning<br />

opportunities).<br />

Consider including district-level family engagement officers to work with parents,<br />

families, and guardians to assist with and reinforce the career development activities.<br />

South Carolina’s Resources for Parents is intended to connect families to information and resources<br />

to involve them in their children’s college and career planning process, including the<br />

Parent Tool Kit for College and Career, eIGP, Work-Based Learning, MicroCareerBursts, Tools for<br />

Career Exploration and Preparation, and Career Clusters.<br />

Kentucky developed an extensive Parent Toolkit to help K-12 educators more effectively engage<br />

families in career development.<br />

Understanding the New Vision for Career Development: The Role of Family is a family-focused<br />

career development brief by NCWD/Youth (authored by the PACER Center) to support family<br />

engagement in career development.<br />

Families and College and Career Readiness: What Schools Can Do to Engage Families in the Individualized<br />

Learning Plan (ILP) Process is an Info Brief by NCWD/Youth that describes actions<br />

that schools can take to improve family engagement in the ILP process based on feedback from<br />

families of youth with and without disabilities.<br />

The Institute for Educational Leadership (IEL) hosts the Family and Community Engagement (FCE)<br />

Network, a national peer learning and action network that brings together parents, teachers,<br />

school and district leaders, and other family-focused practitioners. The FCE Network involves<br />

individuals interested in improving systemic family and community engagement and learning<br />
