(NASA Langley Historical Archives, Weick collection) RETIREMENT PLAQUES Perhaps the most revered award bestowed upon retirees who worked for the NACA was a plaque adorned with the standard NACA wing insignia. NASA retirees who did not work for the NACA during their career are not eligible to receive this coveted plaque. The practice—extended well into the NASA years—was greatly appreciated by the dedicated employees whose hard work and team spirit contributed so much to the advancement of aeronautics and international respect for the agency. Employees at all levels received such plaques—from administrative personnel, to top-ranking researchers and managers, to administrative personnel and support technicians. At a special event during a visit to Langley in 1990, an honorary NACA plaque was presented to Fred E. Weick, a famous researcher who led critical studies in the Atmospheric Wind Tunnel (AWT), the Propeller Research Tunnel (PRT), and airplane flight tests. 18 His work in the PRT resulted in the NACA receiving its first Collier Trophy for the NACA cowling concept. PUBLICATIONS AND CORRESPONDENCE Technical publications produced by the staffs of the NACA laboratories did not feature emblems until about 1944. Prior to that year, NACA reports were published with a cover that simply stated the title, the author(s), and the date of publication. From 1944 to about 1949, covers of lower-level publications known as the Technical Note series carried the standard NACA wings. After 1949, the modified standard wings were used. 18 Weick came to the NACA in 1925 and left in 1936. He did not retire from the NACA.
