THY KINGDOM COME session one 11<br />

America was birthed in rebellion to a kingdom.<br />

“The history of the present King of Great Britain<br />

is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations,<br />

all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute<br />

tyranny over these States,” wrote Thomas Jefferson in the<br />

Declaration of Independence. In other words, this king is a<br />

jerk and his rule of us is unfair!<br />

THE LORD SHALL REIGN FOR EVER AND EVER.<br />

Exodus 15:18<br />

It is core to our nature as citizens of this country to resist<br />

subjection to a kingdom and to see this form of government<br />

as “tyranny.” Democracy is the Christian way, right? Yet it’s<br />

impossible to read very far in the gospels without noticing<br />

Jesus’s frequent mention of a kingdom and His teaching<br />

about its importance. So how should we think about this<br />

kingdom? What does Jesus mean when He talks about it?<br />

And what does it mean for us as we follow Him as Lord?<br />

Over the next few weeks, we’ll learn more about the Bible’s<br />

teaching on the kingdom of God; it’s language, customs, and<br />

values. Today we begin with an overview of why this idea is<br />

so important. Let’s dive in.<br />
