If you’re at all familiar with the Lord’s Prayer,
Matthew 11:2-4, you know the phrase “your
kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as
it is in heaven.”
Today we’re talking about both the now and
the not yet of God’s kingdom. As you’ll learn in
this session, in one sense the kingdom arrived
when Jesus came to earth. It is intended as a
spiritual reality now for all who follow Him. But
in another sense the kingdom is yet to come,
because all that God has for us and everything
he intends the kingdom to be won’t be fully
realized until Jesus returns. This means the
present matters to God, because even now He
is building His kingdom among His people.
But it also means we have a great future to
look forward to, because when God’s kingdom
comes once and for all, in perfection and for
eternity, it will be like nothing we can imagine.
So we can look forward to “kingdom come”
when we get to experience a wonderful forever
with our King, but we can also pray that God’s
will would be done here on earth as He invites
us here and now to know more of Him. What a
great God we serve!
