2.6 The Cost of Not Providing Tracks and Trails in a Community Communities in which tracks and trails are not provided potentially lack: • A full range of recreational opportunities for local residents of all ages and abilities (including older adults, people with disabilities and young children) to enjoy • A full range of recreational opportunities that the whole family can participate in together • Opportunities to meet and engage with other members of the community • The physical and mental health benefits that can be attributed to physical activities such as cycling, walking, horse riding or canoeing • Safe commuter options for people wishing to walk or cycle to work or school • Safe places for young children to learn to ride bicycles • Economic benefits that can be achieved by providing cycling, walking, horse riding and canoeing tourism opportunities to visitors to the area • Economic benefits and township recognition and pride that can be achieved through holding cycling, walking, horse riding and canoeing events • Opportunities to educate the community and visitors about key flora, fauna and environmental issues through interpretive signage and activities 12
3.0 Local Context A range of local and state level documents have been reviewed in order to understand the policy context in which tracks and trails have been or are proposed to be developed. A summary of the information sourced from community plans follows, and a detailed description of the literature review is included in the Appendix.
