Chi Pi Christmas Social Action
Voice of the Second District
Syracuse NY. December 2016. Each year the Brothers of the Omega
Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Chi Pi Chapter, participate in the “Toys for Tots”
program. The objectives of “Toys” for Tots are to help less fortunate children
throughout the United States experience the joy of Christmas; to play
an active role in the development of one of our nation’s most valuable
resources – our children; to unite all members of local communities in
a common cause for three months each year during the annual toy collection
and distribution campaign; and to contribute to the betterment
of communities in the future. Chi Pi Chapter partners with the Marine
Corps program which aligns with our mission of community Service.
The Brothers select a community based organization or school to which
the toys are distributed. Van Duyn Elementary School in the Syracuse
City School District (NY) was selected this year. The school is located in a
Chi Pi Brothers Toys For Tots Christmsas Toy Program
neighborhood where 77% of the students receive Free or Reduced Lunch.
In order to be a contender for the toys, students were required to have
100% attendance (neither late nor leave early) for the month of December
and exhibit CHAMPS behavior (Courageous, Hardworking, Motivated,
Persistent, Scholarly and Safe). On Tuesday, December 22nd,
every hour or so Mrs. Williams pulled the names of deserving students
over the school’s PA (public announcement system). Students whose
names were chosen were invited to the Conference Room which was
transformed into the PBIS CHAMPS Holiday House to select a toy/
gift of their choice. To make the day even more magical, Santa and
Jingles the Elf appeared at Van Duyn Elementary. Needless to say the
event was a tremendous success for the Brothers and the Students!
Delta Mu holds Discussion on College Dating
Delta Mu Brothers and participants at the College Dating Discusion
20
Ithaca, NY. October 29, 2015. At Robert Purcell Community Center
(RPCC), as apart of their Omega Week, the Brothers engaged with the
community on college dating culture. We watched a ted talk on hookup
culture and a video of students giving their thoughts on the hookup culture
at their respective schools. This was a discussion that gave students
a chance to give their opinions on the topic and learn from others. This
event started at 7:00pm and concluded at 9:00pm. The event also had
polls where people were able to voice their opinions on the questions
asked. We asked the audience questions such as “ what is considered dating”
“how many times have you been on a date?” And “what is considered
cheating?” . This was great because it allowed students to give
their true opinions without feeling ostracized by the community. We had
many interesting comments from the students that helped build greater
understanding within the audience. Towards the end of the event, we
gave statistics on the hookup culture and how it has changed over the
years due to social media. We also gave tips on hooking up in college
and ensuring physical and mental safety. We had over 40 students in attendance.
Students were happy with the event; one said “ this was great
just to be able to have a candid conversation on this topic was great”.
