Tau Pi Community Service Initiative
Columbia, MD –December 29, 2015. As part of its Community Service
Initiative, Tau Pi Chapter has been conducting a Christmas Door Decorating
Contest at Harmony Hall for the last seven years. Harmony Hall is an
assisted living community in Columbia Maryland. The facility consists of
over 254 units of independent and assisted living seniors.
With a goal of providing each resident with an opportunity to show and
share their Christmas spirit with fellow residents, Tau Pi Chapter held
its annual door decorating ceremony on Tuesday, December 29, 2015.
Residents had been notified of the dates to decorate their doors. This year
we used six of our Mentees from our High School mentoring group as
judges. For their services, the mentees are able to receive Community
Service points at their respective Howard County High School.
On Saturday, December 26, 2015 the mentees were provided with evaluation
forms and required to visit each door. Forms were completed and
returned to Bro. Frank Miles for review, tabulation and a determination
of winners. The top ten were presented with a Certificate of Performance
and a gift card to the local Giant Food Store at the Tuesday ceremony.
In addition to the Door Decoration Contest Ceremony, the residents were
treated to an outstanding Kwanzaa presentation by Delta Sigma Theta soror
Ms. Michelle Davis. As a former educator and extremely knowledgeable
person of Kwanzaa history, she was able to engage and heighten the
attention of the mostly Caucasians senior residents.
The event was filled with excitement and much applause from the attendees.
After the celebration, many residents stated how pleased they
were with the Kwanzaa presentation and the door decorating contest, and
hoped Tau Pi would come back again next year. Bro. Frank Miles and
Bro. Jerry Watkins, co-Chairman of the Mentoring Committee coordinated
this annual and successful event.
