Julien Marcel
CEO
BoxOffice Media
It is once again my pleasure and privilege to welcome you to our
February issue, which includes our anticipated 2016 Giants of
Exhibition.
Over the years this ranking has become an important component
of our publication’s identity, often regarded not only as a guide
but a point of reference for those who use it and expect its arrival
every year. It is also a fantastic opportunity for our magazine to
recognize the many circuits who open their doors to eager audiences
across the country.
This issue also provides a chance to salute the drive-in theaters as they gather for their
annual convention in Kissimmee, Florida. “Giants” in this case not only refers to
screen or location count, but to the iconic role that drive-ins play in American exhibition.
Working together, the drive-ins have proved that their future is significantly
brighter than the nostalgia associated with them.
Finally, it has been brought to my attention that, besides our Giants of Exhibition issue,
there is another much-anticipated cinema event on the horizon. I won’t make any
bullish predictions about potential winners, but I do expect a positive outcome for our
business: a surge in the general public’s attention to our work—which is always good
for the industry.
WANDA ACQUIRES LEGENDARY ENTERTAINMENT
n Dalian Wanda Group Co. Ltd. has acquired Legendary Entertainment
for nearly $3.5 billion (around RMB 23 billion) in cash, marking
China’s largest cross-border cultural acquisition to date. Thomas
Tull (pictured) will remain as chairman and CEO of Legendary and
will continue to be responsible for its day-to-day operations.
Legendary is a film-production company that owns film, television,
digital, and comics divisions, and has delivered many of the
world’s blockbusters, including the Batman trilogy, Inception, The
Hangover, Jurassic World, 300: Rise of an Empire, Pacific Rim, and
Man of Steel. Legendary’s film productions have grossed more than
$12 billion worldwide at the box office. Upcoming releases include
Warcraft (shown), based on Blizzard Entertainment’s award-winning
universe, and The Great Wall, which is set to be the largest film for
global distribution shot entirely in China.
Tull said in a statement, “I am honored to be a part of the Wanda
family. Together, Wanda and Legendary will create a completely
new international entertainment company. There is an ever-growing
demand for quality entertainment content worldwide, particularly in
China, and we will combine our respective strengths to bring an even
better entertainment experience to the world’s audiences.”
READING INTERNATIONAL HAS NEW CEO
n Reading International Inc. has appointed Ellen
Cotter as president and chief executive officer. Cotter
has served as interim chief executive officer since June
2015 and has worked at Reading in various capacities
since 1998; for the past 15 years she has served as the
senior operating officer of the company’s U.S. cinema
operations.
William Gould, lead independent director of
Reading International’s board of directors, said, “After
conducting a thorough search process, it is clear that
Ellen is best suited to lead Reading moving forward.
We have worked closely with Ellen in her role as chairman
and interim CEO and have been impressed by
her leadership, passion, and commitment to Reading.
Ellen’s experience with Reading and sizable equity
interest in the company is a great combination as we
enter the next chapter of our history.”
Cotter said, “I am excited and honored to be
appointed president and CEO of Reading. We made
great strides in executing on our strategic plan this
past year, and I remain incredibly optimistic about our
prospects for continued growth and success.”
PROCELLA LOUDSPEAKERS COME TO
ESTONIA
n Procella Audio has installed Procella Cinema
loudspeakers at the Scape theater in Tallinn, Estonia,
a 465-seat room with a 20.4 x 8.6-meter wall-to-wall
screen. The cinema features a full complement of 68
Procella Audio Cinema loudspeakers in a 31.5.20
channel Dolby Atmos configuration. The fully immersive
cinema has a Barco 4K laser projection system,
luxury seating, and additional premium extras.
Procella Cinema loudspeakers are used exclusively
for the AS2 presentation technology used in the
Tallinn theater. Developed by Ari “Jaska” Saarinen and
Ari Salenius of the Nordic Cinema Group (NCG), the
465-seat Scape theater
auditorium in Tallinn, Estonia
FEBRUARY 2016 BoxOffice ® 7

EXHIBITION BRIEFS
AS2 system features multiple unique design elements,
most notably that the main screen loudspeakers are
located above a curved, solid screen rather than behind
a perforated screen. This technology improves both
sound and picture quality, providing more image
brightness, ensuring no moiré patterns in the projected
image, and eliminating the degradation that takes
place when sound passes through a perforated screen.
Over the last decade, the AS2 system and Procella
loudspeakers have been exclusively installed in each
of the premium theaters operated by NCG under the
Finnkino (Finland) and Forum (Baltic) theater brands.
In 2016, this will be expanded to include theaters in
Sweden and Norway.
NCM NOW REPRESENTS CANNES LIONS
FESTIVALS IN US
as the official representatives of Lions Festivals in the
United States. The Cannes Lions International Festival
act on behalf of the festival in their respective
countries, supporting creative agencies and clients to
participate and succeed at the festival. Founded in 1954,
the festival takes place every June in Cannes, France.
Philip Thomas, CEO, Lions Festivals, said, “We
have a network of representatives in 90 countries, and
as a global festival the role that these representatives
play within their own markets is essential to the whole
creative community. We’re delighted to be able to
welcome NCM to that team.”
NCM will take responsibility for the Young Lions
Competitions, holding regional competitions to find
COMMUNIQUÉ
n The movie-rating system has long been a fairly
reliable proxy for whatever particular groups or individuals
think is wrong with American movies and—by
extension—America. The ratings are too lenient regarding
violence and too strict regarding sex, and what
is the MPAA’s problem with “the F-word”? Or, liberal
Hollywood sanctions every possible sexual perversion
and blasphemy while
RESPECTING
THE AUDIENCE
New movie-rating survey reveals
what parents really think about
sex, violence, and language in
movies
by Patrick Corcoran,
Vice President & Chief Communications Officer,
NATO
89% of parents surveyed
are extremely or very
familiar with the ratings
and 77% are extremely
or very familiar with the
ratings descriptors and
93% agree that both the
ratings and descriptors
are helpful; 79% agree
the ratings are accurate
and 84% agree the descriptors
are accurate.
Parents Ratings
Advisory Study
2015
bit.ly/1RyPLzi
demonstrating their
hatred for America
and its values. Either
way, these un-American
values are being
“shoved down our
throats.”
In other words, in
a funhouse reflection
of its critics’ complaints,
the rating
system has an agenda,
and it’s not yours.
But what if, just maybe, the rating system is
earnestly trying to do just what it says it is trying to
do: reflect the concerns that a majority of American
parents have about movie content and inform them of
what their children might see in a particular movie?
To test that proposition and determine whether the
rating system accurately reflects parents’ concerns, the
Classification and Ratings Administration (CARA) of
the MPAA commissioned a survey through Nielsen to
see if parents found the rating system useful and accurate,
what kinds of content they were most concerned
about, and how they would classify certain content if
given the opportunity.
The survey (available via the link at left) is fascinating.
Alongside the findings from previous CARA
surveys that measure general familiarity with the
rating system and its usefulness, there is an interesting
variance, by region, in the percentage of parents who
find the ratings accurate. While much of the country
is within a few percentage points of the average, the
New England and Middle Atlantic regions outstrip the
rest of the country with 90 percent and 86 percent of
parents, respectively, finding the ratings accurate. On
the low end, 73 percent and 74 percent of parents in
the Mountain and North Central regions, respectively,
find the ratings accurate. Region also accounts for
differences in whether parents find certain content
appropriate within various rating categories, as we shall
see.
Less comforting, 69 percent of parents said they
had never seen a trailer inappropriately paired with a
movie. This suggests a stricter eye could be applied to
trailer placements at CARA and at theaters.
Much of the controversy over ratings in the press
revolves around the ratings given for sexual content.
An R or the rare NC-17 for sexuality frequently
prompts disapproving clucks, with commentators
typically noting that children can see thousands of
murders at the movies, but heaven forbid they see two
adults express their love for one another, or variations
on the same. This is pointed to as a sign of hypocrisy
or prudery—the MPAA doesn’t want you to see
certain things. Never mind that with the exception of
the NC-17 rating, children can see any movie their
parents wish them to, and no rating prohibits adults
from seeing any movie they choose. In the minds of
critics, the rating system is censorship. It may be more
accurate to say that to most critics, the rating system is
censoring the wrong things.
So, according to parents, what content concerns
them, and is the rating system getting it right? Unsurprisingly
to anyone who doesn’t live in Los Angeles
or New York, sexual content rates highest among
parental concerns, with 80 percent citing graphic sexual
content as the top concern, followed by full male
nudity at 71 percent, and full female nudity and use
of hard drugs both coming in third with 70 percent.
Graphic violence and use of the F-word are next at 64
percent and 62 percent, respectively. Action/fantasy
violence comes in at just 37 percent, so concerns about
decapitated orcs and the wholesale slaughter of Loki’s
alien army and similar depictions in PG-13 titles don’t
prompt the same level of concern among parents as
more realistic depictions.
Indeed, in PG-13 rated movies, use of the F-word
is cited by more parents as appearing too frequently,
despite the fact that it is quite rare and when used
more than once prompts an automatic R rating.
Fifty-three percent of parents are concerned that
it appears too frequently in PG-13 movies. This is
something to keep in mind the next time a controversy
erupts over an appeal of an R rating due to language.
When given the opportunity to apply the appropriate
rating themselves, only 26 percent of parents believed
18 BoxOffice ® FEBRUARY 2016

a PG-13 rating was appropriate for one use of the F-word. Regional
differences appear here as well, with flinty New Englanders, laid-back
residents of the Pacific region, and parents in urban areas more likely
to find its use appropriate in a PG-13 title.
In exercises where the parents would apply ratings for
content, parents, on average, begin assigning an R rating
when two to three uses of the F-word appeared,
much as the current rating system does. The
film’s genre and the context of the usage were
less important than the number of uses.
In contrast, parents judged violent content
less on its frequency than on its kind.
Sexual violence was judged most harshly,
reaching an NC-17 rating in parental
assignment regardless of frequency.
The rating system is most often criticized
for applying restrictive ratings to sexual content
(as opposed to violent content, for which
it is often criticized as too lenient), yet parents
would apply the R rating to almost all sexual
content, with the exception of brief nudity, for which
they would apply a PG-13. Interestingly, even though the
majority of movies released with an NC-17 have received it for sexual
content, most parents would not apply the NC-17 rating for “explicit
scenes of sexual intercourse.”
As noted above, parental concerns over content in PG-13 movies,
which do not restrict attendance by children, are highest for the
F-word at 53 percent, closely followed by graphic sex scenes at 51
percent. No other type of content is cited by more than half of parents
as appearing too frequently in PG-13 movies. The next six types
of content that parents feel appear too frequently in PG-13 movies
are suggestive sexual innuendo, full female nudity, partial nudity,
brief nudity, underage partying, and hard drug use. Graphic violence
is the ninth most cited type of content that appears too frequently,
with 44 percent of parents mentioning it.
Why is this survey important? Because the various camps who
battle over the rating system believe that ratings should mirror their
own moral view of the universe. Those who are comfortable with
the depiction of sexuality, or for whom language is merely language
and can do no harm, or those who find depictions of violence to
be as harmful as the real thing, or those for whom any depiction of
nudity or sexuality outside of wedlock or the privacy of the bedroom
is as sinful as the real thing, or for whom the F-word and other rude
or blasphemous language is an assault on the ears—all would like
to configure the rating system to fit their conception of right and
wrong.
The irony is that each of these views is utterly subjective, and that,
frankly, is the core difficulty in applying any rating system. People are
subjective. The strength of the rating system is that it acknowledges
that subjectivity but places it where it belongs. The sole purpose of
the rating system, since it advises parents on content and, in some
circumstances, restricts children’s attendance based on that content,
is to reflect the concerns of parents. This study shows that the rating
system, with raters selected from parents, is doing a good job reflecting
those concerns. Returning regularly to sample parents’ views and
concerns can only strengthen the system’s accuracy, and regular publication
of the results will strengthen parents’ confidence in the rating
system. That openness will force critics of the rating system to weigh
Parental
concerns over
content in PG-13
movies, which do not
restrict attendance by
children, are highest for
the F-word at 53 percent,
closely followed by
graphic sex scenes
at 51 percent.
their criticisms on the scale with what parents really care about.
In a recent Washington Post column by movie critic Ann Hornaday,
in which she lamented the grueling, graphic violence in
The Hateful Eight and The Revenant, she felt compelled to note the
CARA parent survey, if only to sigh that “parents evinced
far more concern about sexual content and nudity in
movies as opposed to violence.” As more evidence
of parents’ real concerns seep into public
consciousness, perhaps critics will begin to
consider why they have those concerns. My
guess is that parents are most concerned
with what their children will confront in
real life. Although violence is a big concern
in our society, the majority of us will
never confront it in real life. But parents
know their children will at some point deal
with sexuality; they will at some point hear
and use language their parents would rather
they not. Parents want some control over when
and where those things happen. As a parent, my
concerns may not align precisely with the majority of
parents in this survey. Indeed, they do not. Yours may not
align with mine. The movie industry—the movie theater industry—though,
has promised to determine those concerns, and honor
them. And we do that through the rating system. n
NUMBER CRUNCH
STANLEY KUBRICK
n I first became
interested in movie
business data because
of Stanley
Kubrick.
I realize
that most
people
say they
wanted to become a director because
of Stanley Kubrick, but that wasn’t
the case with me. After being
blown away by Kubrick’s films, I
quickly devoured every piece
of writing I could find about
him. During my research,
I discovered how seriously
Kubrick took the business
side of the movie industry. It
was surprising to me that this
creative genius also obsessed over
the commercial success of his films;
I thought those interests never aligned.
I imagined Kubrick to be an uncompromising
artist who wouldn’t spend a second
dealing with anything related to the bottom
line, but that couldn’t have been further from
the truth. Right up until the end of his life and
career—which, unfortunately for all of us, came
at the same time—he was concerned about how
his latest project would perform. The story goes that
Kubrick analyzed box office data in order to find the
best release date for Eyes Wide Shut. It worked. The
Tom Cruise–Nicole Kidman vehicle was the only
film of the legendary director’s career to open in first
place.
The lesson I took away from this is that data is
important to us all. Nobody is above it. If a director
who is considered by most to be one of the great—if
not the greatest—film artists of all time understood its
value, then what possible excuse could anybody else
have for not valuing it?
My new role at NATO will be focused on the
many ways data impacts our industry. It will allow me
to take on projects that intersect with the work I did
during my nearly eight years at Boxoffice.
One of my first priorities will be to analyze data
related to the release window. As I write this, NATO
is in the process of identifying a research firm and an
Or How I Learned to
Love the Data Side of
the Movie Business
by Phil Contrino
Data and Research Manager, NATO
economic analysis firm
to help us get a better
understanding of where
the public stands on this
important topic. How are
consumer habits changing
as the release window
gets shorter? What kind
of financial impact is it
having on theatrical revenue? These are just two of
the many questions we’ll dive into. Better data will
help us make better decisions both in distribution and
exhibition. It’s important for both sides to understand
this topic as thoroughly as possible, and I’m excited to
study it.
I’m also pleased to announce that beginning
in February, NATO members will start to receive
domestic box office predictions from Boxoffice as a
new member service. These predictions will go slightly
beyond what’s currently available for free on pro.
boxoffice.com. During my time with Boxoffice, I often
received notes from people in the exhibition community
telling me how valuable those predictions were to
their business. It’s exciting to help usher in a new level
of access.
I also look forward to talking to more exhibition
professionals who deal with data to see how many different
approaches there are out there. There’ll be time
for that at CinemaCon in just a couple of months.
The work with data that’s happening in the movie
business is very inspiring, and it’s bound to only get
better. Just look at how much things have changed
in the last 10 years. The impact of social media, the
analysis of loyalty-program data, detailed research into
what kind of content consumers respond to most,
and many other factors have changed this business in
substantial ways.
In addition to obsessing over grosses every week, I
also make a point to read about how other industries
are using data, and it’s fascinating. Keeping tabs on
data practices outside our field often allows me to see
the movie industry through fresh eyes, which then
results in new approaches to information. I highly
recommend checking in on the Predictive Analytic
Times (www.predictiveanalyticsworld.com/patimes)
from time to time to see how professionals in other
industries use data to better understand their worlds.
I look forward to keeping you all updated in these
pages. n
n Movie Tavern’s Vice President of Marketing
Danny DiGiacomo dishes on Southern Theatres’
foray into the cinema dining experience
Interview by Daniel Loria
How has the competitive landscape changed
since you first launched Movie Tavern?
When the first Movie Tavern opened in 2001, we
were one of the few who
dared to launch such a
concept. Now that it has
gained such popularity,
it is interesting to see all
the great variety of dinein
theaters and offerings
available to moviegoers.
How does
programming
help bring an element of variety into Movie
Tavern’s offerings?
Our Breakfast and a Flick program is our most
popular program. Every Saturday and Sunday for 9:00
a.m. shows we serve from a special breakfast menu that
offers quite a variety of options, including mimosas
and Bloody Marys.
What tends to work better for you, themed
menus that are curated along with a specific
film, or a consistent menu that returning
customers can expect?
Our guests love fun themed menu options, but
really what they want is good quality food and good
service. That makes them come back and bring
friends.
How do you tackle the ordering concept?
We always recommend that our guests get there
30 minutes early or so, but all seats are equipped
with call buttons so service is available anytime
throughout the show. We do a last call at a certain
point before the movie ends so our guests can finish
up and be on their way with no hassle when the movie
is over. We have years of experience to pull from in
terms of service logistics. Both our internal team and
outside vendors are part
of the process.
How does staff
training differ in
your cinema dining
concept as opposed
to the rest of the
Southern Theatres
circuit? Do you look
for staff that come in
with restaurant experience, or does it require
a separate or additional training process?
We have a great training program that is well suited
for those who have a restaurant, hospitality, or cinema
background. We love having a team with a variety of
experience because it gives us that edge and variety we
need to provide great service.
What role do more traditional concessions,
like popcorn and candy, play in your
operations?
Popcorn is always a popular part of the moviegoing
experience, but we have seen first-hand that our
guests truly love the fact that they can have dinner
and a drink delivered to their seat while they take in
a movie. n
The outdoor sector of exhibition gathers in
Kissimmee, Florida, for the 16th annual United
Drive-In Theatre Owners Association Convention
24 BoxOffice ® FEBRUARY 2016

JOHN VINCENT
PRESIDENT
UNITED DRIVE-IN THEATRE
OWNERS ASSOCIATION
Interview by Danial Loria
We had a record year at the box office in
2015; how was business for drive-ins across
the country?
I daresay even better, percentage-wise. When
you have family movies that really hit, like Minions,
Inside Out, and Jurassic World, it really does send
many drive-ins over the top.
What are you going to be covering at this
year’s convention?
We’ll be focusing on marketing, especially social
media and in-theater marketing. For years we had
to center on digital cinema because that was the
main thing: getting the deals done. Now that we’re
on the other side of that, we’ve chosen to try to
take the convention and focus on something different
every year. Last year we covered concessions
and had Larry Etter from Malco Theatres and the
National Association of Concessionaires.
The concessions stand is quickly changing
in theaters around the world; is that change
also reflected at the drive-in?
Just like McDonald’s will always have burgers
and fries, drive-ins will always do well with
comfort foods. Many of us over the years have experimented
with salads and the like, but it’s kind
of fallen flat. We do recognize, however, that in
today’s society there is a more heightened awareness
of things like gluten-free. There are some
drive-ins that are leading the charge in trying out
some new menu items, but at the end of the day
the brass tacks of money is always going to come
from comfort food.
What are some of the biggest trends you’re
seeing in the drive-in business?
We’re seeing more dabbling in alternative
content. A couple of drive-ins did the [Grateful
Dead’s] Fare Thee Well concerts. A couple of
drive-ins are experimenting with sports events
when they can get the licensing. We’re definitely
going to see a lot more in that direction. We’re
seeing success in that area, and it will probably
continue to grow—maybe we’ll even see studios
come up with some of their own alternative-content
events in the coming years. Now that we
have the digital projectors, it opens up a lot more
possibilities. Some drive-ins are even experimenting
with gaming nights during the off-season.
We do have to emphasize, however, that most of
our revenue does continue to come from first-run
Hollywood movies. Like our indoor counterparts,
we absolutely don’t want to see the release window
collapse.
Now that the digital conversion is mostly
realized, what are some of the biggest
concerns on your agenda?
The window is such a big concern for us.
There needs to be that incentive for people to
come out. Most of us are a little more sensitive
on the summer season, with some big summer
films opening as early as May when not all drivein
locations are open. Other than that, it looks
really good for drive-ins. We had a very successful
summer. There’s this negative connotation out
there that drive-ins don’t work and that’s simply
not true. It is tough to make it work in a smaller
market with a $50,000 projector, and we’ll probably
lose a few in rural areas to that, and it’s sad
and I hope this is only temporary. It remains to be
a great concept, when people talk about the resurgence
of drive-ins, I always say that it bottomed
out in 1987—that was the worst year—and it’s
been a fairly solid business since the early ’90s,
the resurgence actually started back then. Driveins
are a great way to watch a movie, it’s a great
option for families, and we also think it fits with
Generation Z. There’s been some talk about what
this latest generation wants, about being looser on
restrictions on cell phones, and that’s exactly what
drive-ins can offer.
Are there any specific regions where you’re
seeing a surge of interest in drive-ins?
We’re seeing some growth in the South in
places like Texas. The fair-weather states will
probably be preferable for new builds. Let’s face
it, the land is expensive these days, so many
people will try to make the most out of it on a
year-round basis. I think that’s where most of the
growth will continue to happen, but there’s still
good news in other areas: one just reopened in
Bangor, Maine. If there’s one area of the country
where we’ll see a lot more growth, I would say
the southern parts of the country where you can
really make the numbers work.
What’s the current state of the drive-in?
We work hand in hand with NATO and appreciate
the help we get from them and our distributor
partners. We’re all happy to be in this business. We
do this with a passion. Most locations are locally
owned and operated, but there are also some drivein
chains out there. We’re also seeing some midsize
circuits pick up some drive-ins, and I’m happy to
see that as well. It’s nice to see some of these medium-sized
players getting into the space.
IN THE LOBBY
TICKETS,
POPCORN,
DEATH STAR
Dimensional Innovations turns a
cinema lobby in Omaha into an
immersive experience
by Daniel Loria
n Star Wars mania became a
full-blown global phenomenon
(once again) in late 2015.
You might have heard about
it: the latest entry in the series,
The Force Awakens,
launched in mid-December
to a record-breaking run that
culminated by toppling Avatar
as the highest-grossing film of
all time in North America after
only 20 days of release. Theater lobbies across the
world were abuzz with anticipation from first-time
fans to repeat visitors. At the recently opened Alamo
Drafthouse in Omaha, Nebraska, however, The Force
Awakens dominated much more than the conversation.
Guests were treated to a fully immersive Star
Wars–themed lobby as soon as they stepped into the
new cinema: flashing lights, sound effects, and largescale
replicas of some of the franchise’s iconic sets
helped create the illusion of a galaxy far, far away for
local moviegoers.
26 BoxOffice ® FEBRUARY 2016

“The theater owner, Tyler Calabrese, for Alamo Drafthouse,
and the architect, Kip Coleman from Elevation
Architects, came up with the original idea and then
contacted us through Alamo corporate to see if this was
a feasible project and how we could design and build it,”
recounts Brad Woods, practice director at Dimensional
Innovations, a Kansas-based design firm that has crafted
custom-themed environments for high-profile clients
from a number of industries. From the locker room of
the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets to Sprint’s ad campaign in
Times Square, Dimensional Innovations has specialized
in creating an engaging public experience with their
designs. Now you can add the Star Wars–themed lobby at
the Alamo Drafthouse’s Omaha location.
Details like lighting and paneling come into play,
and there’s even an Emperor’s Throne, where visitors can
take photos while doing their best impression of the evil
emperor Palpatine. The true centerpiece of the project,
however, is a 10-foot replica of the Death Star towering
over the lobby. A push of a button triggers an LED
system that recreates the laser blast from the original film,
complete with sound effects that give the whole experience
a truly immersive feel. Woods admits the laser touch
proved to be the project’s most difficult challenge. “Using
DI’s Innovations Lab, we were able to design and install
a proprietary LED system that was programmable and
resembled the laser from the Death Star in the movies.
It all had to be synced with the sound system, as well as
being serviceable from the manager’s office. We also built
mock-ups for the Death Star and illuminated interior
wall panels.”
The project was supposed to be under wraps—until
an Internet spoiler foiled those plans. A picture of the 10-
foot Death Star traveling down the highway hitched onto
the back of a trailer was leaked online by an unsuspecting
motorist—and honestly, who wouldn’t post a picture of
that sight after their morning commute?—drawing scores
of views and comments as the image quickly went viral.
“At first, we were worried that some Star Wars fanatics
would follow the Death Star as it was being shipped
to Omaha from our factory in Kansas City in hopes of
finding its destination,” remembers Woods.
Dimensional Innovations isn’t new to the exhibition
industry. The company has worked on projects for
leading exhibitors AMC and Cinemark over the last 15 to
20 years, specializing in theater-concept design, interior
design, fabrication, and installation. Their experience in
exhibition includes tackling a range of projects, from setting
up exterior and interior signage to creating immersive
themed environments like the one in Omaha.
“It is all about creating a memorable experience for
moviegoers, and we feel that this begins in the lobby,”
says Woods. “Our designs help keep patrons engaged and
keep them coming back to see movies and thoroughly
enjoy their experience. Nowadays, theater owners have to
go above and beyond ‘Let’s go see a movie’ and create that
experience to get them off the couch and away from their
70-inch TVs. We collaborate with owners and their architects
to help their theaters set themselves apart, which, in
turn, adds to the owners’ bottom line.” n
REGAL ENTERTAINMENT GROUP
Knoxville, TN / regmovies.com
Regal Cinemas once again leads exhibitors in the U.S. and Canada in both screen count and sites. The circuit plans
to install luxury recliner seating in an additional 1,000 screens in 2016 and 2017, effectively furnishing around a
quarter of all its screens with premium seating. The process was already in full swing through 2015, with around
850 screens furnished with recliners by year end. Regal is also betting on enhanced food and beverage offerings,
expanding their menu in 185 locations by the end of 2015 and offering alcohol at 135 sites in the same period.
acquired online gaming platform WorldGaming in September, giving them access to the tournaments, leagues,
and gaming ladders organized by the eSports company. More recently, Cineplex and WorldGaming signed a
History
Amherst Cinema operated as a single-screen 600-
seat commercial theater from the 1920s to 1999, when
it closed. The derelict structure was rescued in 2001 by
a group of visionary community leaders who worked
on a purely volunteer basis for several years, raising
millions to renovate the theater and open it as a nonprofit
art-house cinema. Our theater opened in 2006
with three screens and added a fourth in 2013.
Audience
Our audiences are intellectually curious, discriminating,
and adventuresome. We are a premier arts
destination and the sole venue for art-house cinema
in western Massachusetts. Patrons come from a 25-
mile radius and tell us that our theater is a very welcoming
destination and offers compelling programs.
We love to hear that—our goals are to be a crossroads
for our big, wide community, to open new doors for
audiences, and to provide a thoroughly enjoyable theatergoing
experience.
Programming
Our programming is clearly different from the
commercial cinemas in our region; it is distinguished
by our first-run art-house film, curated film series
and special events, and educational program for
school children. We often hear from our audiences
that no one type of program draws them and that
they deeply appreciate our offering so many different
programs. Patrons tell us they trust our film selection
and curatorship.
Showmanship
We had a lot of fun recently with the Internet Cat Video Festival
from the Walker Art Center. We promoted this program through
social media, inviting patrons to send us images of their cats, which we
showed onscreen before the program. (Audiences loved that!) We also
partnered with a local animal shelter. Our late-night screening sold out
to the college-age crowd, and our matinee drew families with children.
What’s not to love about a full house of festively costumed cat lovers?
We know that onscreen messaging in the theaters is crucially
important to converting audiences to members and to promoting
the film series and special events unique to our theater. We’re now
creating our own trailers to speak directly with our audiences.
Overall, our priority is curating diverse, top-flight programs.
Once we set the program, then we figure out promotion. We use the
traditional channels for all programming: website, weekly e-newsletter,
social media, media releases, and e-mail. We also target groups
and individuals we believe will be interested in a particular film or
series. Hard copy works for us. Our quarterly newsletter is mailed to
8,000 mailboxes. The newsletter also seems to evaporate out of our
lobby. So do the lobby flyers we create.
We have relationships with other nonprofits and with academic
institutions, and host curated film series with these partners, who
promote the programs among their own constituencies. Examples:
art museums, environmental groups, food banks, language-study
organizations, and women’s studies centers. We also advertise with a
local radio station and provide content for their programs and radio
hosts.
Membership
As with most arts organizations, ticket sales cover only a portion
of our costs, so memberships are critical to our financial stability and
make all our programming possible. Members get reduced admission
to most programs, so there are economic benefits. We believe,
though, that most people become members because they support
what we do. Our members understand that independent cinema
builds a strong and vibrant society and they want us to thrive. We
have 5,000 members who are widely distributed over a 25-mile
radius. We’re so pleased that membership keeps growing at 7 to 10
percent a year.
The Power of Cinema
One of the great joys of our work is bringing rising and established
It isn’t in our top 50 grossing films, but one of our
favorite films at The Grand was the Australian comedy
Kenny. Not many theaters in the U.S. played it (I believe
we had about 20 percent of the entire U.S. gross from
our cinema!), but our community really latched on to
that a few years back. Discovering a film that no one else
was playing was fun.
TheGrandCinema
T A C O M A , W A S H .
History
Our cinema is in a converted space from a 1920s Odd Fellows
building (an older fraternal organization). Part of the building was
remodeled into a three-screen (now four) cinema in 1995. Originally
it was a for-profit enterprise, but that didn’t work and was about to
go out of business. Local cinephiles stepped up to rescue the cinema,
converting it to a nonprofit in 1997. The executive director, Philip
Cowan, has been in the top position since 2006. Philip worked for a
decade in minor league baseball before joining The Grand, keeping
his self-made pledge to only take jobs that were fun. As The Grand
does more things in the community, the staff continues to expand,
adding one newly created position most years.
Community
The Grand has what is probably a standard art-house audience:
slightly older, middle class or above, with more women than men.
38 BoxOffice ® FEBRUARY 2016

We do partnerships with local
colleges such as University
of Washington–Tacoma and
Tacoma Community, but
ultimately younger audiences
compose a very small part of
our audience.
Programming
Particularly during awards
season, many of our films stay
at The Grand for a couple of
months. Because of this, we often
heard “We want to see something
new” from our frequent
patrons, so we started a Tuesday
film series. Every Tuesday we bring in a film that plays a matinee and
an evening screening. This gives audiences a chance to see a new film
every week. We play a lot of documentaries and foreign films on those
days that we otherwise wouldn’t have room to play. Tuesdays are now
our highest attended weekday because of this. Another event we created
that is unique to The Grand is a festival for the filmmakers named by
Filmmaker magazine as their 25 New Faces of Independent Film. For
the last six years we have played the films of those filmmakers and flown
them to Tacoma to present their work. Filmmakers who’ve attended
consistently say it is their best festival experience ever, largely because it
is like a mini film camp for them where the focus is on them.
Cross Promotion
We do well with environmental
or progressive films and
make efforts to get speakers
for post-film discussions after
as many as we can. Getting
an interested organization to
cross promote a screening is
the absolute best way to draw
an audience, so we try to
find films that fit community
interests. Recent examples
include Bikes vs. Cars and The
Messenger, a birding movie that
easily sold out.
Membership
Members are a huge part of what we do at The Grand. We have
about 7,000 members, and that continues to grow. We give two big
perks that are important to our members: free small popcorn and access
to a member’s only parking lot. We gave away over 30,000 orders
of popcorn to our members last year, and everyone says it is the best
popcorn anywhere. As for the parking, our cinema is on the border
of downtown Tacoma and parking is scarce, especially during the day.
We worked out a rental agreement with a neighborhood parking lot
that was underutilized, and it has turned into a true win-win partnership
for all involved. n
BOXOFFICE BREAKOUTS
Six to Watch in 2016
With the New Year comes a clean box office slate.
It’s a foregone conclusion that most established
franchise flicks like Batman v Superman: Dawn
of Justice, Captain America: Civil War, X-Men:
Apocalypse, Finding Dory, Ghostbusters,
Star Trek Beyond, and Rogue One: A Star
Wars Story (among others) will find plenty
of success thanks to built-in fan bases
and pre-existing histories on the big
screen. What about everything else,
though?
ZOOTOPIA March 3
Disney’s in-house animation team is on a roll: Frozen, Big Hero
6, and Tangled warmed many hearts over the past half decade,
and this latest offering looks to corner family audiences during
the spring box office season. The film’s teaser trailer featuring
a sloth-run DMV office has played like gangbusters over the
holidays in front of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, so there’s little
doubt parents already have this on their radar. DISNEY
2016 looks to have many potential
winners in store, making it difficult to
narrow down this list. Without further
ado, here are six films we think could
have audiences talking enough to turn
them into strong box office performers.
CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE June 17
After May’s Neighbors 2, this summer looks fairly light on adult-friendly
comedies with big box office potential. That’s where Central Intelligence
comes in with a mid-June opening, often a great launching pad for comedy
hits during the pivotal season. What makes this one a sleeper contender?
Five words: Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart. Individually they bring enough
appeal to casual moviegoers to sell most movies with their names alone.
Putting them together may prove to be a stroke of marketing genius.
WARNER BROS.
THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS July 8
This summer will begin with Disney/Pixar’s Finding Dory as the presumed animation
champion of the year, but don’t count out the newest original idea from Illumination
Entertainment. Featuring an all-star cast of comedic voice talent such as Louis C.K.,
Kevin Hart, Eric Stonestreet (among many more), and a widely appealing concept that
asks what pets do all day when their owners are gone, The Secret Life of Pets will give
parents just as much reason to check it out as their kids. The first trailer has received
nearly unanimous praise since debuting in mid-2015, bringing to mind the kind of prerelease
buzz enjoyed by the animation studio’s Despicable Me six years ago. This could
prove to be one of the biggest hits of the summer. UNIVERSAL/ILLUMINATION
SUICIDE SQUAD August 5
If 2016 has a list of wild cards, this one is near the top. After Batman v
Superman, the DC Cinematic Universe will veer into a decidedly non-Marvel
direction with David Ayer’s (presumably) R-rated adaptation of a lesserknown
comic property featuring a team of villains assembled to counter
an unstoppable threat. Will Smith stars as one of the lead characters, and
Jared Leto’s take on the Joker (the first in a live-action film since Heath
Ledger in The Dark Knight) is highly anticipated—but we’re betting Margot
Robbie’s Harley Quinn will be the talk of the town (and the inspiration for next
Halloween’s most popular costume). WARNER BROS. / DC
THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN September 23
Director Antoine Fuqua (The Equalizer, Olympus Has Fallen) and his team
have assembled an all-star cast for this modern update of John Sturges’s
original western—not the least of which includes Denzel Washington and Chris
Pratt. Westerns are still hard sells for today’s audiences, but the potent mix
of veteran star power and proven young blood could produce a solid postsummer/pre-holiday
hit. SONY
DOCTOR STRANGE November 4
Although part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this film represents a
venture into the mystical worlds we haven’t yet seen in the eight years and
many chapters since the first Iron Man. Disney and Marvel have cast the
film brilliantly with Benedict Cumberbatch in the lead as Stephen Strange, a
surgeon who learns to harness the powers of magic after a life-altering car
accident. It’s hard to question their ability to experiment with obscure and
unknown (to the general public) characters after the successes of Guardians
of the Galaxy and Ant-Man, and Cumberbatch’s legion of global fans will surely
be eager to see him don a superhero persona. DISNEY/MARVEL
by Kenneth James Bacon
n We’ll get to that title in a minute.
I have been to a drive-in theater exactly
once. It was so close to my home that I
could sometimes receive the FM audio of
whatever movie they were showing in my car
as I rolled up my street. Puget Park Drive-
In opened in 1971 in Snohomish County,
Wash., and closed a few years ago to make
way for a hospital—I’ve been there once
too. But some years ago, having driven by
the place hundreds of times (you could see
the screen from the freeway), I decided to check it out. I remember the movie
was Runaway Bride (because I’m easily talked into things) and the Friday night
crowd was quite large. As they say in the parlance of an eldercare newsletter—a
good time was had by all. Puget Park was okay (the bathrooms were clean), but
I would have really preferred to take a DeLorean back to 1955,
when Chicago-area operator Stanford S. Kohlberg was a drive-in
showman of the first order.
Kohlberg owned the Starlite Drive-In, and movies weren’t the
only thing on his mind. Profiled in the June 4, 1955, issue of Boxoffice,
Kohlberg’s outdoor theater boasted a driving range, batting
cage, outdoor ping-pong (in the
Windy City?), ice skating rink,
miniature golf, horseback riding
(free hay!), an arcade, a motorcycle
track, and an amusement
park dubbed Kiddieland (all
rides five cents). When he wasn’t
hosting jitterbug contests he was
projecting Lady and the Tramp
and The Robe onto his 125-foot
CinemasScope screen. Kohlberg
eventually managed to expand his
holdings to 50 drive-ins across
four states.
Now, about that title.
A few years after Kohlberg
appeared in the pages of Boxoffice,
he hooked up with Chicago advertising executive Herschell Gordon
Lewis, who had moved on from making commercials to making
exploitation features. Kohlberg produced a few of them, including
2,000 Maniacs, Blood Feast, and Color Me Blood Red. Perfect
drive-in fodder to feed his theaters. Many films in the Lewis catalog
were “nudie cuties,” a popular exploitation genre at the time. An
hour or so in length, these featured the barest of plot and the barest
of young woman. An early example was the Kohlberg-Lewis epic
Boin-n-g shot in gloriously faded Eastmancolor. It was occasionally
exhibited as Untamed Women in Nature in the Raw. The film stars
veteran character actor William Kerwin (who was dating June 1963
Playmate of the Month Connie
Watson at the time) and Peter
Falk–eyed Bill Johnson as two
middle-aged men who decide
to make a “nudie cutie” and
hire four young women to frolic
and cavort in various stages of
undress. It’s all played as harmless
comedy as the bumbling producers
and their cameraman forget
to put film in the camera, forget
about removing the lens cap, and
fall out of boats in their attempts
to photograph the breasts and
buttocks of their young charges.
The bizarre musical score features
a skating-rink organ and a bleating
clarinet. The four pretty, but unnamed, women—Don Draper
would quite like them—go to great lengths to expose all but the
most private of parts while they undress, sit, prance, preen, and
row a boat. They aren’t totally successful. I know this because I just
watched all 70 naked minutes of it. You know—for science. n
FILMMAKER INTERVIEW
NOTES FROM
THE UNDERWORLD
JOHN HILLCOAT’S LATEST
FILM, TRIPLE 9, BRINGS US A
GRITTY CRIME DRAMA THAT
HAS MORE IN COMMON WITH
THE NEW HOLLYWOOD OF THE
1970S THAN TODAY’S GLOSSY
PRODUCTIONS
by Daniel Loria
A
stark, uncompromising crime drama with an ensemble
cast of morally ambiguous characters, Triple 9 very much
feels like a film from a different era. The film’s screenplay
first drew attention after its inclusion on the popular
Black List, a ranking of the best unproduced screenplays, back in
2010. It wouldn’t be until Australian director John Hillcoat (The
Road) became attached, however, that the project began to build
momentum. It was clear from the beginning that the production
needed a cast as strong as its screenplay, thus beginning a multiyear
pre-production saga to pull together an ensemble of actors that
could commit to the film’s shooting schedule. After multiple false
starts, Triple 9 finally entered production anchored by strong performances
from Casey Affleck, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Anthony Mackie, Aaron
Paul, Norman Reedus, Woody Harrelson, and Kate Winslet. The film
draws its title from the police code that indicates “officer down,” a
last-resort tactic that a renegade group of dirty cops and ex–special
ops agents employ in order to create a distraction to pull off one
last heist. Boxoffice spoke with director John Hillcoat on the making
of the film and its heart-thumping action set pieces.
Bank robberies are one of those unforgettable vicarious
thrills that the cinema affords us. If executed well, they’re
impossible to forget. Classics like Gun Crazy, The Friends
of Eddie Coyle, and Heat are just a couple that come to
mind. How did you want to approach the way you shot
your own heists in the film?
I find action very interesting when you try to ground it. That’s
when you get unpredictability. If you ever talk with guys that have
been around those sorts of situations, they’ll tell you it’s always
messy, chaotic, and unpredictable. I spoke with several advisers,
people who advised Michael Mann in Heat and contributed to the
Bourne Identity series, and I went to YouTube to research live-action
actual robberies, police shootings, all that kind of stuff that is now
accessible. I also looked at DVDs that I love, like the big shootout
in The Getaway—I think Peckinpah was one of the masters of
action. [His work] has something that has always stood out for
me: focusing on the reactions of everyday people. That’s the sort of
detail I was going after: bank tellers wetting themselves with fear,
that kind of messy realism. We researched as much as we could and
time of shooting I made sure we had enough coverage for
when it came time to edit; that was very important.
You put together a great ensemble cast in this
film. What was the biggest challenge of bringing
such a talented group together?
I’ve worked with ensembles quite a bit in my time,
but this was the biggest and most stressful. It was because
of the schedule juggling and less to do with the different
personalities. Everyone on board were serious actors
genuinely excited about the project, and they fired off one
another like in a play where everyone is reacting to each
other onstage. There was a communal aspect to it, like a
family; everyone raised their game because of that interaction.
That’s when you know they’re not just interested
in the spotlight—it doesn’t have to be on them the whole
time. It was a nightmare when dealing with their schedules,
though. These are working actors who are very busy.
were very specific about details like what happens when a body is
Tasered. It all had to do with research in both the real world and
the cinematic world. I find that’s the aesthetic that best keeps you
on edge, when it’s rooted in reality, as opposed to some recent
crime thrillers that are becoming more and more divorced from
that reality. It’s become overly stylized and cartoonish. I wanted to
return to those great films and worlds that I find more interesting,
those that have one foot in reality.
Getting those scenes right is crucial for the film to work;
were you pressured by that?
I’m never relaxed, and when you’re juggling so many characters
there’s an additional challenge to it. I did have the benefit of research,
as I mentioned, and a lot of the gang unit officers who appear alongside
Anthony Mackie in the film are the actual guys from the unit.
A lot of the extras that appear as the Latino gang members are actual
ex–gang members. We used a lot of SWAT-trained police advisers on
set and on camera. Actors like Chiwetel Ejiofor were trained by Navy
SEAL guys. We used different advisers for different situations. At the
The theme of good versus evil is present
throughout the film, and it’s never depicted in a
black or white manner, especially where religion is
concerned.
I tried to find a matter-of-fact authenticity wherever
I could, and shooting the film in the South, in Atlanta, I
noticed in the gang unit that most of the guys were very
religious. When facing such extreme situations, sometimes
people lean on certain beliefs that help rationalize that chaos.
I was intrigued by that and how there are two sides of the
fence; doing things in the name of religion can sometimes
be very dangerous. I find that morality, when it comes to
extreme action and violence, is never black and white, but
religious dogma sometimes does tend to make things black
and white. That’s why I tried to present, on one level, how
these high ethical codes are leaned on to help justify actions,
and in the end you can see how damaging and compromised
those actions really are. I really wanted to get those layers
across. I don’t believe that life is black and white, especially
when it comes to high stakes and serious moral dilemmas,
and when it comes to violence there is no true victor—everyone
is tainted by that experience. I wasn’t trying to single
out anyone in particular—when depicting law enforcement, a lot of
them turned to Christianity, and the pecking order of the world’s top
organized crime association used to be the Italian Mafia, who were
Catholic, and today it is the Jewish Russian mob. It’s all very well documented,
and I didn’t want to cast an aspersion on any religion. It’s just
trying to be truthful to those specific characters.
What sort of films have inspired your career as a filmmaker
the most?
I’ve been very influenced by world cinema, but the reason I’m
comfortable working in America is my love of genre films. I love
the type of films that test characters and the great American genres
like westerns and crime films—to me they reached a high point in
the ’70s when they mixed the skill set of the studio system with the
maverick film school students that were influenced by world cinema.
It was a hotbed of creativity that has now been going on in TV over
the past 10 years or so. For me the ’70s were like the renaissance following
the golden years of Hollywood that spanned from the 1940s
to the ’60s. It was definitely the high-water mark. n
THEATER SPACE FOR LEASE
AN 8,400 SQ. FT. SPACE containing two
movie theaters is available for lease in
Frankfort, KY, at a very reasonable lease
rate. It would be perfect for the new concept
of eating in the theater. The theaters
are located in the middle of a major shopping
center. The center owners would
prefer an operating movie theater rather
than convert the space into retail use.
