Meritor’s Krista Sohm Elected Board
Member of Trucker Buddy
Trucker Buddy International Board of
Directors has unanimously elected Krista
Sohm, vice president, marketing and
communications for Meritor Inc., as its
newest board member.
“We are very excited to
have Krista join the board,”
said Randy Schwartzenburg,
executive director of Trucker
Buddy International. “Krista
is recognized for her ability to
create and implement innovative
ideas. We look forward to the
contribution she will bring to
our board in helping us advance
Trucker Buddy’s mission of
enabling schoolchildren to
understand the importance of
the trucking industry in our
everyday lives.”
Krista Sohm
Sohm, who has 25 years of industry
experience, said, “I am proud to join the
board of TBI and represent Meritor. TBI
creates a shared experience and helps
support many of the essential skills children
are learning in the classroom, including
writing, math and geography.”
Meritor, a platinum sponsor of the
organization, has supported Trucker Buddy
for more than 15 years, Schwartzenburg
said. In addition to the philanthropic
contributions from the Meritor Trust, the
company has also endorsed the volunteer
efforts of its employees. Most recently
Mike Pennington, who passed away last
year, represented Meritor on the TBI board
and served on its advisory committee.
Trucker Buddy International,
an independent, nonprofit
organization, is often called the
No. 1 trucking image campaign
in North America and has
helped educate schoolchildren
and introduce their parents and
educators to the trucking industry.
This gives them the world
through the eyes of a professional
truck driver. The Trucker Buddy
program helps to educate and
mentor schoolchildren via a
pen pal relationship between
professional truck drivers and children in
grades K-8 as supervised by their teachers.
After an extensive screening process,
professional truck drivers are matched with
a class and as directed by the teacher, share
news about their travels with their class.
Students write letters and send pictures
to their drivers. Students’ skills in reading,
writing, geography, mathematics, social
studies and history are enhanced and
learning is made fun.
Since 1992, Trucker Buddy International
18 www.TruckDriverMagazines.com TRUCKING 2015
has helped educate
more than a million
schoolchildren and
introduced them to
caring, compassionate
men and women,
professional truck
drivers. The ongoing
success of the
program is because of driver volunteers,
participating teachers and the contributions
of sponsors. There are no fees to the drivers
or teachers to participate in the program.
The Trucker Buddy program is funded
entirely through sponsorships and
donations.
Drivers interested in joining the
Trucker Buddy program can contact
C.R. England Is First U.S. Carrier
to Introduce Western Star 5700
XE Automated Shift Transmission
Tractors into Fleet
C.R. England announced the introduction
of 2016 Western Star 5700 XE tractors into
their fleet.
Starting in July and then over the next
several months, almost 200 new units will be
put into service in the C.R. England fleet, with
tenured solo and team drivers and million
miler drivers the first to receive the Western
Star vehicles. Tenured Independent Contractors
with lease availability will also be offered the
option on new units.
“The adaptive cruise is so innovative and
makes it easier to focus on being safe,” said
Zach England, Chief Operating Officer after a
recent trip driving one of the vehicles. “We are
pleased with this new addition to our fleet and
expect it to be quite popular with our drivers.”
These exclusive, state-of-the-art tractors
feature woodgrain and leather interiors and a
Detroit Powertrain. This combines the DD15
with the direct drive DT12 automated shift
transmission to provide one of the industry’s
most efficient powertrain packages.
In addition, these trucks come with many
safety features including forward collision
mitigation, adaptive cruise, and hill-start
technologies. The Western Star 5700 XE has
been designed to increase efficiency and to
reduce the total cost of ownership.
Transport America Announces
Owner Operator Contractor Pay
Increase
Transport America recently announced a
significant pay increase for its owner operators.
This pay change will allow all of the company’s
independent contractors to make $1 per mile.
“Every single person from top to bottom
here at Transport America is working
together to provide a great experience for
our drivers,” said Mike Bash, director of
recruiting operations for Transport America.
“We’re invested in our drivers’ careers as
24 www.TruckDriverMagazines.com TRUCKING 2015
much as they are and they understand that
we’re able to provide them with the support
and opportunities needed for success. This
pay increase for our owner operators is just a
small piece of the large vision we have for our
drivers’ futures.”
The pay increase, which went into effect
July 1, eliminates the difference between
HazMat and non-HazMat base pay. With
the increased pay, all Transport America
owner operators will earn $1 per mile. This
mileage pay increase comes just after another
announcement of additional pay package
enhancements which went into effect May 1.
These changes included improved fuel and
DEF discounts with 100 percent pass through
to the owner operator. This is decreases drivers’
cost anywhere from 10-60 cents per gallon.
In addition to the top pay at Transport
America, owner operators can also expect
multiple lease options, base plate bonus,
$2,000 sign on bonus with own truck, no
forced dispatch, $1,000 referral bonus and
consistent miles as well as the respect, quality
assistance with insurance, maintenance
and dispatch, and great all-around driver
experience the company is known for.
Transport America currently has job openings
for solo drivers, teams and owner operators
for regional, dedicated and OTR routes. For
career opportunities, please call 877-218-5342
Covenant Transport announced a new pay
package for its HazMat OTR team drivers.
The pay package, which includes a $1,000
per week minimum guarantee for professional
drivers with at least one year of experience,
went into effect June 1 for the more than 1,000
HazMat team drivers currently working for
the company. This is believed to be the largest
guaranteed minimum program in the industry.
The minimum guarantee for HazMat team
drivers with less than a year of experience is
$850 per week. The new pay package also
features guaranteed home time, companypaid
HazMat endorsement, an improvement
in earned home-time to 2 days earned for 12
Covenant’s guaranteed home time policy also
pays drivers $100 for each day they are late for
their scheduled home time.
In addition, the company also hires
individual drivers without their HazMat
certification, pays for them to get certified and
has an analytic matching program to pair them
up with a compatible team driving partner.
Covenant’s HazMat team driver compensation
drivers to earn much more as a team than if
they were running solo.
The
Bottom Line
By Shasta D. May
IRS Budget Cuts Lowers Collections
Treasury inspectors indicated in a recent
report that revenue officers collected 7%
less money from delinquent taxpayers in
2014 than they did in 2011. In addition,
the number of tax collectors in the field
has dropped 28% over the past five years.
However, they have increased efficiency,
since the average revenue per case has
increased.
IRS Penalty Abatement for First Time
Offences
Under the IRS First Time Abate program,
the IRS will approve a onetime waiver of
the late payment and filing penalties if the
taxpayer qualifies under rules of the program.
To qualify for the break, the taxpayer must
have paid or arranged to pay the tax due and
must have been compliant for the past three
years. The abatement is not automatic and
taxpayers will have to request the relief.
Are You Facing Unresolved IRS Issues?
If you have IRS troubles, whether it’s
unpaid tax liability or unfiled taxes, try and
TAX TIPS
get it fixed as soon as possible. Maybe all
you need to get back on track is a monthly
payment plan or the preparation of back
taxes. Whatever it is, delaying longer is
likely not the best option. As we approach
the last quarter of another year it’s a good
time to look into resolving your IRS matters.
Unresolved issues with the IRS can turn
into levies on your bank account, liens on
property or wage garnishments. Consider
talking about your issues with your tax
professional and coming up with a plan to
resolve the problem before the next tax filing
deadline.
Are you on Extension for 2014? Time is
almost up!
If you are on extension for the 2014 tax
year and have not had your income taxes
prepared now is time to get everything to
your tax preparer. The October 15, extension
deadline is almost here.
Income Tax Projections
You now have almost nine months of
operation for the year, and that is more than
enough income and expense information on
your trucking operation to project your profit
and loss for the rest of the year. As a self-
44 www.TruckDriverMagazines.com TRUCKING 2015
employed person, you need to know where
you stand before the end of the year in order
to make smart financial decisions. Having a
projection done will give you some valuable
information and answers to important
business questions. Have you paid in enough
with your quarterly estimated tax payments?
Is there anything you can do before year-end
to reduce your tax liability? Will it help to
buy some tires or make a contribution to
a retirement account before the end of the
year? Being able to answer those questions
will enable you to plan for the remainder of
the year. You may be planning to purchase
a new truck, take some time off, do a major
truck overhaul, fix up your home, or add to
your savings. If done now, a tax projection
will indicate your tax position before the end
of the year so you can do some informed
planning. Tax projections can act as a built
in warning system for the business as well,
when things start to go bad you can usually
see it on paper first. This is especially
important for those that do not have the
benefit of monthly Profit & Loss statements
at their disposal.
Having a tax projection to review along
with advice from a trucking tax professional
can keep you and your business out of
trouble by making sure you get the business
and financial information needed to make
informed decisions.
