Winless Johnson: It’s Not Time Yet To Be Worried
Jimmie Johnson smiled and offered polite
reassurance to fans and media who may
be getting antsy all because the reigning
NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion
hasn’t won yet in 2014 -- four races into the
schedule.
“It’s not even close to time yet (to be
worried),” a goodnatured
Johnson told
reporters at Auto Club
Speedway, where the
six-time Cup champ is
an all-time best five-time
winner.
Johnson may not
have a win, but he has
certainly been a factor in
every race. The Hendrick
Motorsports driver reeled
off three top-six finishes
in the first three events,
then led 44 laps last week at Bristol, Tenn.,
before a tire problem ruined his day, resulting
in a 19th-place finish.
“It would be great to get the win and get
ourselves locked into the Chase,” Johnson
said. “But I think we are in a good spot and
we’ve been very competitive. We have had a
shot to win a couple races. All in all things are
well and we will hopefully get a win before
long.”
Johnson said he personally -- as well as the
team -- spoke with Goodyear representatives
about the tire situation at Bristol.
“We had a great conversation about the
wear on the tire and what potentially could
have happened,” Johnson said. “From a team
standpoint we are still very adamant that the
wear on the tire was
not the issue. We are
very confident and the
tire was still intact. Just
a half inch strip came
unwound from the inside
corner of the tire and it
was some 60 feet long.
“We just try to learn
from it and try to give
them the tire and all the
information we can so
they can make a better
product.”
Jimmie Johnson
His Hendrick
Motorsports team seems
to have a handle on things.
“I absolutely care about points,” Johnson
said. “I think it’s a pretty rare situation to have
16 different winners in 26 races. There will be
people transferring into the Chase based on
points.
“We showed up at four of the five pretty
far off, especially off the truck,” Johnson
explained. “We didn’t test as often as we
would have liked during the off-season to
understand the new rules package and we
have been playing a bit of catch-up.
“The next five are going to be real good
races for us. If we can come off the truck how
we start a race I think we will be in that racewinning
window.”
Hamlin Focused on Winning, Not Grudge
Denny Hamlin conceded
that he thought about last
year’s race at Auto Club
Speedway – specifically his
final lap accident – for a brief
portion of the first practice lap
back at the track this season.
“The only time I thought
about it directly was going
off into turn three on the first
lap,” Hamlin said. “The next
time I came around it was an
afterthought and I haven’t
thought about it since. Denny Hamlin
The site of his near head-on collision
inside that corner has now been reinforced
with a SAFER barrier to
absorb more of the shock
that Hamlin’s body instead
endured. He was taken by
ambulance from the track
and diagnosed with broken
vertebrae which left the
23-time Sprint Cup Series
winner sidelined for four
races and part of a fifth,
his title hopes finished two
months into the 2013 season.
But instead of holding a
grudge against Joey Logano,
who he collided with triggering the accident,
Hamlin insists he simply circled the Auto
Club 400 on this year’s schedule.
The best revenge would be a victory.
“This is a track we really want to perform
well at,” Hamlin said. “Redemption would
be nice, so instead of retaliating, it would be
great to end the day in Victory Lane.”
Because it was the second consecutive
week Hamlin and Logano had tangled, the
accident fueled a feud that carried over to
Twitter, veiled threats of retaliation and
unmistakable bad blood between the two
drivers.
Ironically, Logano and Hamlin have been
assigned garage stalls right next to each other
for the weekend. And while it makes great
fodder for the press, both downplayed the
intensity now a year later.
“We’re close in points, so I expected it,”
Hamlin said of the California close quarters.
“For us it really didn’t matter too much.
Really doesn’t change anything. I spoke the
same number of words to Joey as I did my
teammate Matt whose parked on the other side
of me.”
Logano went
even further
downplaying
that there was
any lingering
uneasiness. He
told reporters last
week at Bristol,
Tenn. – the
Joey Logano
track where the
acrimony ignited
on track in 2013 – that things had settled as far
as he was concerned.
“I feel like we get along fine now,”
20 ITJ www.TruckDriverMagazines.com

Logano said. “A year is a long time. It’s
over now. I feel like we’ve moved on.
Obviously, people were talking about
it this week because it’s the one-year
anniversary of the whole fiasco, but you
move on and forget about things.
“You’re supposed to forgive and
forget and that goes both ways, so we
both knew what we had to do and I feel
like we’ve moved on and we’re going
from there.”
In terms of his health, Hamlin said
he is not only fully healed from the back
injury but, “I’m better than I was before
the wreck.”
“Physically I feel really, really good,
actually,” Hamlin said. “The best I’ve felt
back-wise in a really long time, years and
years.” •
Crete Carrier Corporation
Offer Pay Increase
Crete Carrier Corporation is pleased to
announce a two-cent increase in pay for all
national over the road drivers and owner operators
at Crete Carrier, Shaffer Trucking, and
Hunt Transportation.
The pay increase took effect on April 1,
2014 and made starting pay for national Crete
Carrier drivers
range from
$.43 to $.47 and
starting pay for
national Shaffer Trucking drivers range from
$.44 to $.48 depending on experience.
“As a company, we have tremendous opportunities
to grow. Our customers want and
need our trucks. The only thing limiting our
ability to grow is enough high quality drivers.
Our customers deserve and expect safe and
reliable service, and that starts with having the
best drivers,” says President and CEO, Tonn
Ostergard.
Schneider Rolls Out New Logo
The calling card of North America’s
premier provider of truckload, intermodal
and logistics services is getting a new look.
The Schneider
logo has been
refreshed and
has a more
contemporary design that accurately reflects
the broad geographies it serves.
The company’s previous logo had been in
existence since 1985, which positioned the
organization well at the time based on its leading
role and expertise in moving over-the-road
truckload freight nationwide. In addition to
changing the logo to one that is more befitting
a company operating in multiple transportation
modes beyond U.S. borders, through
the years the company became more widely
referred to as Schneider.
“Although we are not changing the name
of our legal entities,” said CEO and President
Chris Lofgren, “to our associates, our customers
and the communities we serve, we are, and
have long been known as Schneider.”
Transition to the new logo will occur over
time, including on the 10,000 trucks and
45,000 trailers/containers rolling down the
highway. Implementation will take place
as trucks, trailers, containers and other
equipment and materials are lifecycled and
replaced.
“Our logo may be changing,” Lofgren
noted, “but the core values and enduring
commitment to excellence delivered over our
last 78 years remain the same. Customers can
continue to count on Schneider’s safe, courteous,
hustling associates to deliver superior
experiences that will excite them.”
As for changing the company’s hallmark
orange color?
“It wasn’t even on the radar,” Lofgren
noted. “We are Schneider and we are the Big
Orange. And we couldn’t be more proud.”
Prime Inc. Drivers Featured in Men’s
Health Magazine
Prime Inc. is pleased to have drivers Rodney
McCloud and Justin Boschee featured in
the April issue of Men’s Health magazine.
The issue features McCloud, Boschee and
the company’s Driver Health and Fitness
(DHF) Coach Siphiwe Baleka. The eight-page
spread titled, “Hit The Road Jacked” written
by Joe Kita with photographs by Andrew
Hetherington, asks readers what can truckers
teach them about fitness.
‘Plenty,” says Kita. “If they can stay in
shape despite 300 days on the road a year,
then you have no excuses. Get ready to lose
that trailer and gain some horsepower.”
The article continues by citing recent statistics
on the health
of drivers. “A 2014
survey of long-haul
truck drivers by the
National Institute for Occupational Safety
and Health found that 69 percent are obese,
17 percent morbidly so. A recent Gallup-
Healthways analysis revealed that transportation
workers, including truckers, are the fattest
and have the highest risk for chronic health
problems of any occupational group.”
McCould and Boschee share their stories
about what inspires them to stay healthy on
the road, while Baleka offers nutrition tips, his
7 Rules of On-the Road Fitness, and a menu
of 32 body-weight exercises.
“We are very proud of Rodney and Justin’s
accomplishments as safe and healthy drivers,”
said Baleka. “And we are honored that Men’s
Health took an interest in learning about how
our drivers are taking proactive steps to lead
healthy lifestyles. Hopefully, this will help
change the stereotype image about truck drivers.”
McCloud claimed the title of “Fittest of
the Fleet” last August at Prime’s inaugural
competition, and Boschee was runner-up.
Boschee also lost 40 pounds through the
company’s award-winning 13 Week Basic
DHF program. •
HUNTER’S
WORLD
The Top Four Hunting
Rifles For 2014
By Keith Cantelmo
Whether or not you are disappointed in the
performance of the rifle that you used for deer
hunting last fall, or are just looking for something
new to add to your gun cabinet, finding
the best firearm on the market today can be a
bit of a frustration.
This is not because there are so few top tier
deer hunting rifles available right now, but precisely
because there are so many!
For that very reason, we’ve broken down
four of the very best deer hunting rifles available
for 2014.
YOU CAN’T BEAT THE REMINGTON
700 LINE OF RIFLES
When you get right down to it, there is a
very real reason why so many deer hunters all
over America choose a Remington 700 rifle
when asked to name their favorite firearm.
Potent, powerful and offered in a number of
different chambers, this is a relatively lightweight
but highly engineered piece of American
firearms engineering that is prized for its amazing
accuracy and knockout power.
MG ARMS ULTRALIGHT TOPS THE
LIST IN THIS PRICE RANGE
Though you can slide into a Remington 700
rifle for right around $600 or $700, this deer
rifle is going to set you back anywhere between
$3,700 and $4,000 - or more - depending upon
just how aggressive you get with accessories.
At 4 ¾ pounds it definitely lives up to its
ultralight name thanks in large part to the stainless
steel and Kevlar frame. This is another
“otherworldly” accurate deer rifle, and will
make your hunting buddies jealous.
START YOUR KIDS OUT RIGHT-
THE MARLIN 336 YOUTH
Marlin Arms have been making amazing
rifles for decades and decades now and the 336
Youth is likely the best gun for a young deer
hunter to use their first few times in the woods.
Though it doesn’t have the kind of punch, pop
or power that some of its larger cousins do, it
is lightweight and deadly accurate at ranges
between 150-200 yards and by the way, it
doesn’t kick like a mule. It’s price tag is inexpensive
which helps to make this the perfect
starter rifle.
THE RUGER AMERICAN IS WAITING
TO BE CUSTOMIZED BY YOU
Hands down one of the best “barebones”
deer rifles money can buy today is the Ruger
American. It is offered in a number of chambers
(including.308 and.270 Winchester) and is
the perfect platform rifle for you to customize
to your hearts content. With a ton of different
accessories and add-ons designed specifically
for this rifle, this can be a deer rifle that serves
you well for years and years to come.
Each of the rifles outlined above have proven
themselves time and time again out in the
woods and all of them are more than capable of
dropping a buck with precision accuracy.
Keith is an avid outdoorsman with a passion
for hunting whitetail deer. Trophy Deer Hunting
Secrets is a site which helps hunters of all levels
better their skills and share their experiences with
fellow outdoorsmen. Visit our site to learn more
about hunting rifles.
your hunting style, experience or knowledge, any
one of the crossbows highlighted above can fit the
bill when you are looking to invest.
