measure.” 211 <strong>Thomas</strong> did not advocate Christian withdrawal from the world, but<br />

called for direct involvement in the struggle for a just <strong>and</strong> equal community within<br />

society. Significantly for <strong>Thomas</strong>, the ‘three-fold activity of God’, namely Creation,<br />

Judgment <strong>and</strong> Redemption, motivated by God’s love <strong>and</strong> directed towards the<br />

establishment of the Kingdom of God, continue today through the ferment of<br />

development, justice <strong>and</strong> love within the world: 212<br />

God calls human beings to participate with God in all these three levels of<br />

Divine mission, namely to participate in programmes of creative development, to be<br />

involved in fighting injustice <strong>and</strong> establishing social justice through the rule of law<br />

<strong>and</strong> other checks to oppressive power <strong>and</strong> along with it all to participate in the<br />

redemptive mission of love. 213<br />

Within the dynamic nucleus of <strong>Thomas</strong>’s theology significant theological signposts<br />

for the emergence of Dalit theology may be identified. In the subsequent Chapters<br />

<strong>Thomas</strong>’s theology is brought into critical engagement with Dalit theologians in order to<br />

assess <strong>Thomas</strong>’s theological contribution for the emergence of Dalit theology.<br />
