WATT: THE POOR MAN

Speaker of the House of 

Representatives, Sir Gerald 

Watt, QC, said access 

to justice should mean that 

justice is accessible to all 

irrespective of financial circumstances. 

Speaking at the consultation 

on Wednesday for members 

of the clergy, Sir Gerald 

said justice is not readily 

available to all as only a very 

few can afford to access justice 

at the Privy Council due 

to the high costs involved. 

He noted that over the 

past ten years, just under fifteen 

cases from Antigua and 

Barbuda went to the Privy 

Council for resolution. He 

said he firmly believes that 

this small number of cases 

is a reflection of the fact that 

most people are unable to 

pay the high costs associated 

with appeals to the Privy 

Council. 

“Going to the Privy 

Council is not cheap and if 

you look at the cases brought 

NEEDS JUSTICE TOO 

before the Law Lords (Privy 

Council) there are mainly 

capital punishment cases 

where the government pays 

and those cases where parties 

have deep pockets and 

can afford the expense,” he 

explained. 

According to the Queen’s 

Counsel anyone appealing 

to the Privy Council has to 

cough up large sums of money 

that include hiring a British 

barrister to file the case 

on their behalf.

Also speaking at the consultation 

was the chairman 

of the CCJ Trust Fund, Dr. 

Linton Lewis. He provided 

insights into the operations 

of thee fund. He said the 

Fund was established to ensure 

the financial independence 

of the CCJ into ‘perpetuity’. 

He disclosed that up 

to December 31 2015, the 

Trust Fund had paid out over 

US$69 million to finance the 

operations of the court and 

the Regional Judicial and 

Legal Services Commission.

Weeks, who said it was time 

for the Caribbean to have a 

final court of appeal that understands 

the cultural milieu 

from which the cases come. 

The visit of Dr. Lewis and 

Weekes to Antigua was facilitated 

by the National Coordinating 

Committee, the 

body responsible for undertaking 

the public education 

campaign. NCC Chairman, 

Ambassador Dr. Clarence 

Henry, said other such consultations 

are planned with 

other groups in the not too 

distant future.

Farmers Network) recent Meet the 

Farmer on the Farm Campaign 2016.

Thomas engaged the minister to have a 

hands on experience in the field to see the 

conditions and challenges facing farmers 

within Antigua & Barbuda. 

At the end of the tour, Minister Marshall 

pledged financial support ($4,200 

USD) for two young and upcoming farmers 

to travel for IICA training in Barbados 

later this year.



Dangerous drivers fined, licenses suspended

Ronnie James age 33 of Long Street 

was convicted and fined $1,000 and has 

his driver’s license suspended when he 

appeared before Magistrate Wason at 

the District A Magistrates Court. The 

defendant was in court on a charge for 

dangerous driving. 

On February 3 rd 2016 Officers from 

the traffic department were conducting a 

traffic check at the junction of American 

and All Saints Road when at about 9:45

stand trial at High Court

Saralee Green of Marble Hill 

facing charges under the Misuse of 

Drugs Act has been committed to 

stand trial in the High Court during 

the September’s assizes. 

Concerned in the supply of cannabis, 

unlawful possession of cannabis, 

unlawful possession with intent 

to transfer and drug trafficking were 

the charges incurred after a large 

quantity of cannabis were found in 

her possession. 

Reports are that on December 

3, 2015 officers from the ONDCP 

intercepted the vehicle Green was 

driving, a search was executed thereafter 

and a number of tightly packed 

marijuana in brick form were found 

secured in bags hidden in the vehicle. 

The drugs were seized and 

weighted 489.8Lbs with estimated 

wholesale value of $1,959,200.00EC. 

Green appeared before Chief 

Magistrate Jo-Anne Walsh yesterday 

at the District ‘A’ Court where the 

charges were read to her; however 

she was not required to plead to the 

charges until trial in the High Court 

am the defendant who was the driver of 

motor car A2446, was seen running the 

red traffic light long after it would’ve 

turned red and vehicles were already 

travelling from West to East through the 

junction. 

The defendant was stopped and cautioned 

about the offence and was subsequently 

taken to the Police Headquarters 

where he was charge. He was given until 

March 3 rd to pay the fine and drivers 

license suspended for one week.

Vernon Braithwaite of Sutherlands 

yesterday appeared at the St. John’s Magistrates 

Court having been charged of two 

traffic offences. 

The court heard that on April 20, last 

week while on St. John’s Street Officers 

observed Braithwaite, the driver of vehicle 

A26175, driving in a suspicious manner. 

As a result, he was stopped and asked 

to present his drivers licence, but the defendant 

told officers that he does not own 

a driver’s licence. In addition, inspection 

of the vehicle revealed that it does not have

The charge against the 

duo was brought in February. 

A man accused of sexually 

molesting a relative of 

the two mentioned people 

had reported to the police 

that he was battered at their 

hands. 

The complainant however 

refused medical attention 

and also refused 

to give a statement to the 

police. 

Officers on the same date did also arrest 

and charge Verlinda Roberts age 63 

of Picadilly for dangerous driving as she 

too ran the red traffic light; she appeared 

before Magistrates Wason to answer to 

the charge. 

The defendant was the driver of motor 

car A9594 and was travelling from 

East to West through the said junction. 

The defendant was fined $1,000 to be 

paid by March 3, 2016 and driver’s license 

suspended for one month. 

Braithwaite convicted of traffic offences 

a valid registration tag on the wind screen. 

He was arrested and taken into custody and 

given a set of charges. 

Charged with driving an unlicensed 

vehicle, in court he pleaded guilty to this 

charge and he was convicted reprimanded 

and discharged; for driving without a licence 

he also plead guilty and he was fined 

$500 to be paid by June 9,2016. 

In default of this payment he will serve 

one month in prison. Braithwaite was also 

ordered to pay a fine of $2,500 to the court 

for driving without vehicle insurance, 

which must be paid by April 26, 2016. 

Battery charge against mother and son dismissed 

On those grounds the 

police prosecution threw 

the matter out. 

Teen gets 48-hour stay at ‘1735’

A teenage boy was sent on a 48-hour stay at Her 

Majesty’s prison for the repeated breach of his probation. 

The troubled teen allegedly battered another youth 

last month, and was charged. 

Against the advice of his guardian he also went to a 

recently held event and returned home during the wee 

hours of the morning. 

When he appeared before Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel 

in District B this week, the court ordered him remanded. 

He is expected to return to court this morning.

Port workers excel in health and safety training

mention for 

their outstanding 

performance Manager, Curtis Dennie 

The port’s Operations 

in a recently 

concluded workshop on health and 

safety hosted by APA and facilitated 

by health and safety expert, Wycliffe 

Frater. 

Alfred Dyer, Errol Samuel, Larry 

Noel, Austin Russell and Clair Martin 

were the individuals singled out from 

the ten day course. 

The port’s Operations Manager, 

Curtis Dennie, congratulated the outstanding 

performers as well as the 

over two hundred other employees 

who participated in the training, which 

took place at the Antigua and Barbuda 

International Institute of Technology 

(ABIIT). 

Speaking to Caribbean Times, Dennie 

went further to describe the workshop 

as a success. 

“This training achieved the strategic 

objectives of the Port. It was designed 

to contribute towards the improvement 

in the management of risks in the Port’s 

environment and also to contribute towards 

increasing the level of awareness 

among the staff about health and safety 

issues in their work environment”, explained 

the Operations Manager. 

He added that the employees have 

already been practicing some of the 

training that they have received. 

“There is now improved knowledge 

and understanding about safety 

procedures and practices in the work 

environment. We can safely say that 

this training was justified. The safety 

and welfare of our staff here at the port 

continues to be a top priority among 

management. We also believes that the 

recent training will enhance the overall 

operations of the port as well”, indicated 

Dennie. 

Among the topics that are being 

covered in the workshop to include-fire 

prevention, wearing protective gear, 

handling dangerous and heavy cargo 

and how to store and lift various types 

of equipment. 

The month of April, has been designated 

as a month of training at APA.

the Juvenile Justice Reform 

Project in grand style, as the 

country is among six other 

OECS countries to house the 

first ever-family courtroom, 

which will deal exclusively 

with juvenile matters.

Jules said the country should 

be proud of this accomplishment 

as the other countries 

look forward to follow the 

precedent that the twin island 

state has already set. 

Jules noted that it should

room, but the country will 

now need to take it a step 

further in ensuring that it is 

operational and is viewed by 

members of the public as a 

real hall of justice.

to process island’s youth 

quickly and in the best interest 

of the child, we at the 

OECS expect court will be a 

model facility for all of the

The United States Ambassador 

to Barbados and 

the Eastern Caribbean Sates 

Linda Talialatela, congratulated 

officials for the positive 

strides made in the Juvenile 

Justice Reform project 

and the level of commitment 

shown throughout the region. 

Talialatela believes that 

the youth is indeed the future 

and is pleased that the program 

has yielded so much 

success not only in Antigua 

and Barbuda but throughout 

the region. 

She added that the $5.8 

million initiative had set 

juvenile justice reform on 

an upward trajectory in the 

region and commended the 

twin island state for being 

one among three OECS 

countries to pass a model 

Child Justice Bill into law, 

signaling a true commitment 

to juvenile justice reform. 

“We congratulate you on 

this development and remain 

hopeful that the necessary 

amendment will be made in 

the near to change the age 

of criminal responsibility 

from 8 years to 12 years, as 

is recognized internationally. 

We are also mindful of 

the steps that juvenile justice 

authorizes here are taking to 

ensure youth in conflict with 

law are eventually housed in 

spate facilities from adults,” 

the Ambassador pointed out. 

The US Ambassador 

pledged her governments 

continued support through 

the USAID to strengthening 

diversion approaches 

and helping at-risk youth 

successfully reintegrate into 

their communities and that 

given the requisite support, 

such youth could and would 

meaningfully contribute to 

Antigua and Barbuda Development.

Ministry of Works holds vehicle auction 

On Tuesday 3rd May, 

2016 the Ministry of Works 

and Housing will hold a 

vehicle auction. 

The auction of vehicles 

located at the Antigua and 

Barbuda Defense Force 

Headquarters, Camp Blizard, 

Coolidge, will begin at 9:00 

a.m. 

The upcoming auction 

will have eighteen (18) vehicles 

for sale, all of which fit 

into the categories of uneconomical 

or derelict and are 

at the Defense Force compound.

Thomas says: 

“As in prior auctions, the 

sale of any vehicle in the 

auction will be awarded to the 

highest bidder adding that the 

buyer will not be required to 

pay any administrative fees.” 

He said “this feature has 

been decided upon to facilitate 

a seamless process and 

streamline the purchase of the 

items for buyers.” 

An Auctioneer has been 

commissioned to facilitate 

the auction of the vehicles 

formerly attached to the Antigua 

and Barbuda Defense

LIAT statement regarding 

an employee in Barbados 

The management of LIAT (1974) Ltd 

confirms that one of its employees is in police 

custody in Barbados assisting law enforcement 

officers with their investigations 

into a drug-related matter. 

The employee in question was taken 

into custody on Tuesday shortly after arrival 

at the Grantley Adams International Airport 

on a flight from St. Lucia. 

The management of LIAT wishes to indicate 

its full support for, and cooperation 

with, law enforcement authorities in relation 

to any investigations where its cooperation 

is required.

Benjamin further pledged his government’s continued 

support in ensuring that programs are developed to make 

sure that the youths of the nation are rehabilitated and are 

able to make meaningful contributions to society. 

He stressed that the Gaston Brown led administration believes 

that youths are the future and will continue to invest 

in them. 

The Minister further noted that he will further look at the 

legislation and have further discussions on the age of criminal 

responsibility. 

Permanent Secretary within the Ministry of Public Safety 

and Labour Sharon Peters said the journey has just began as 

the team will be moving towards phase two of the Juvenile 

Justice Reform Project, and she looks forward to the further 

collaboration of even one involved.



Making a difference with Adult and Teen Challenge 

Farrell Lavallee of Winnipeg, Manitoba, 

was in the prime of his time when 

he won a million United States dollars, 

spent it all in 13 months and almost lost 

his life. 

He came to Antigua last year (2015) 

and he shared with a group of pastors 

and other church leaders the powerful 

and life-changing impact of the prominent 

organization Adult and Teen Challenge 

(Central Canada) upon him as he 

made a determination to better negotiate 

life’s many challenges. 

Adult and Teen Challenge of Central 

Canada Inc. is a registered charity 

that provides yearlong residential 

recovery programs for individuals 

struggling with addiction. 

They are also part of the Global 

Teen Challenge network around 

the world. Having visited the island 

and fulfilling the requirements of an 

Awareness Tour in June 2015, it was 

determined that it was immediately 

necessary to establish an arm of the 

work in Antigua. 

Global Teen Challenge in now 

keen on following through with the 

offer of training and necessary support 

for our local church leaders 

through Teen Challenge of Central 

Canada to take founding initiatives 

among us. 

This comes in the form of an invitation 

for local leaders to attend 

the Fellowship of Christian Assemblies 

Conference in Grand Prairie, 

Alabama, where our vast vision for 

the work will be shared, then on to 

Winnipeg to observe the Teen Challenge 

movements there subsequently 

returning to help people with addiction 

in our home country of Antigua 

& Barbuda. 

Two local pastors, with the principled 

support of the Advisory Board, 

have personally welcomed the opportunity 

to further equip themselves for this 

kind of work with a critical investment 

of their time and money. 

Pastor Casca Etienne, Program Director 

(Elect) shares the conviction 

that “Our response to the invitation … 

will be of tremendous benefit to Antigua 

and Barbuda – indeed to the Eastern 

Caribbean as we embrace this new 

and promising venture of breaking all 

forms of addiction”. 

In an effort to raise funds for this 

most necessary engagement an activity 

in the form of a Walk-A-Thon and 

Hike has been planned for Saturday, 

30 th April. Participants will walk from 

Pensioners’ Corner, starting at 5:30am 

- hiking all the way to Fort Barrington. 

Supporters are asked to contribute 

$10.00 to the endeavor. 

Organizers posit that other generous 

donations will be welcomed and 

acknowledged. 

Adult & Teen Challenge of the Eastern 

Caribbean States will serve to help 

individuals struggling with addiction 

through a model of Christian discipleship 

via residential and non-residential 

programming. 

This is the same successful model 

used in Adult & Teen Challenge 

Centers throughout the world that has 

helped to see thousands of individuals 

find freedom from addiction and positively 

change their lives. 

The first Teen Challenge Center began 

in Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A., in 

1958 and was founded by David Wilkerson, 

author of “THE CROSS AND 

THE SWITCHBLADE.” 

The work originated as a ministry to 

teenage street gangs and evolved into 

a residential program for drug addicts, 

alcoholics, and other troubled youth 

and adults. 

The name “Teen Challenge” was 

chosen because the original work was 

directed primarily to teenage street 

gangs. When teen gangs turned to 

drugs, Teen Challenge focused on that 

need as well. There are now approximately 

1,100 programmes in more 

than 110 countries with approximately 

35,000 students in residence globally.

Venezuela enforces public 

sector leave on three weekdays 

CARACAS - Venezuela’s Government 

Tuesday announced enforced 

leave for public sector workers three 

days a week, meaning they will only 

work just two days, in a bid to tackle an 

electricity shortage. 

“There will be no work in the public 

sector on Wednesdays, Thursdays 

and Fridays, except for fundamental 

and necwessary tasks,” Vice President 

Aristobulo Isturiz said on television. 

It is the latest drastic measure by the 

government as it also grapples with an 

economic crisis that has Venezuelans 

queuing for hours to buy scarce supplies 

in shops. 

President Nicolas Maduro’s government 

had already cut the workday for

Dominican Republic’s banana 

industry earns US$420 

million per year and accounts 

for more than 32,000 

jobs, 44% of them fixed and 

of which 12% are women. 

HAVANA - Foot amputations in people 

with diabetes decreased in Cuba due to the 

use of Heberprot-P, a specialist said yesterday. 

Lianet Rodriguez, national promoter of 

the Comprehensive Care Program for patients 

with diabetic foot ulcers, told reporters 

that Ciego de Avila ranks as the most prominent 

province of the island using the Cuban 

medicine, which is unique in the world for 

treating the ailment. 

Some 200,000 patients from the province 

have benefited from the injected medicine. 

Yanet Gonzalez, a first-degree specialist in 

Angiology and Vascular Surgery in the territory, 

stated that there is at least one health 

the country’s two million public sector 

employees to six hours and put them on 

paid leave on Fridays until June 6. 

His vice president on Tuesday said 

the measure would now be extended by 

two days, apart from the weekend, so 

they will only work on Mondays and 

Tuesdays. He added that primary and 

high schools would also now be closed 

to pupils on Fridays. 

The government blames the power 

shortage on a drought caused by the 

El Nino weather phenomenon, which 

has caused the country’s hydroelectric 

dams to run low. Venezuela is hoping 

for a lot of rain over the coming weeks 

to replenish the reservoirs while the restrictions 

are in place.

Two new Zika cases confirmed in USVI 

ST THOMAS - The US 

Virgin Islands Department 

of Health on Tuesday confirmed 

one additional case 

of the Zika virus on St Croix 

and one in St Thomas. 

The total confirmed Zika

Paris attacks suspect 

charged with 

terrorist murders 

PARIS - Paris attacks suspect Salah Abdeslam 

was charged Wednesday with terrorist murders 

and using bombs and weapons for the deadly 

November assaults that killed 130 people, his 

lawyer said. The preliminary charges were filed 

in Paris after Abdeslam, 26, was extradited from 

Belgium to the French capital Wednesday. 

After the court hearing, he was sent to Fleury-Merogis, 

a high-security prison 19 miles 

south of Paris, attorney Frank Berton said. Abdeslam, 

the last known survivor of those known 

to carry out the Nov. 13 attacks, will be held in 

isolation in a special camera-equipped cell until 

his next hearing May 20. Berton said his client 

has “volunteered that he would explain himself 

at some later date,” the Associated Press reported. 

The Belgium Federal Prosecutor’s Office 

said Abdeslam was delivered to the French authorities 

under a European arrest warrant accusing 

him of helping plan and execute the Paris 

attacks at restaurants, a music hall and a sports 

stadium outside city. 

The Islamic State claimed responsibility. 

Abdeslam, a Belgian citizen, was on the run for 

months before being captured in the Brussels 

neighborhood of Molenbeek on March 18 four 

days before terrorist attacks there killed 32 people 

at the Brussels Airport and at a subway stop. 

A note found on a computer abandoned 

by one of the terrorists in the Brussels attacks 

suggested that the arrest of Abdeslam, who had 

links to the Belgian extremists, led them to move 

ahead the date of the attacks. 

Abdeslam told Belgian authorities he was 

supposed to kill himself during the Paris attacks 

but abandoned his suicide vest and fled the 

country, entering Belgium the same night. Sven 

Mary, Abdeslam’s Belgian lawyer, described his 

client as having “the intelligence of an empty 

ashtray” and as “a little jerk among Molenbeek’s 

little delinquents, more a follower than a leader” 

in a profile published Wednesday by the Liberation

JetBlue pilot accused 

of flying plane drunk 

NEW YORK - A JetBlue pilot 

has been charged with flying under 

the influence of alcohol. A federal 

complaint made public Wednesday 

says that Dennis Murphy Jr. was 

selected for a random alcohol test 

last year after piloting a flight from 

Orlando, Florida, to New York on 

April 21, 2015. 

Murphy, who was only hired 

January 7 of 2015, was behind the 

controls of flight 583 with 119 passengers 

to Orlando. Later that day, 

he flew flight 584 with 151 passengers 

back to New York City, CBS

ANKARA - A female suicide bomber 

wounded at least 13 people when she 

blew herself up near the main mosque 

in the northwestern Turkish city of Bursa 

on Wednesday, officials said, the fifth 

suicide bombing in a major urban center 

this year. 

Photographs from the scene showed 

the severed torso of what appeared to 

be the bomber lying at the side of the 

mosque. Police ushered dazed passers-by 

out of surrounding streets as ambulances 

and forensics teams arrived. 

The local governor’s office said the 

woman was thought to have detonated 

a device she was wearing at 5:26 pm 

near the western gate of Bursa’s Grand 

Mosque. Health Minister Mehmet Muezzinoglu 

said 13 people were injured, none 

critically. There was no immediate claim 

of responsibility. “The attack was carried 

out by a suicide bomber. It is a woman,” 

a senior government official told Reuters. 

Many of the wounded had light injuries 

such as cuts from shattered windows and 

some have already been discharged from 

hospital. 

Turkey has been hit by a series of suicide 

bombings this year, including two 

in its largest city Istanbul blamed on Islamic 

State, and two in the capital Ankara 

that were claimed by a Kurdish militant 

group. It has also faced attacks from far 

leftist groups, mostly on police and security 

forces. The Bursa attack happened a 

day after the United States warned American 

citizens in Turkey about credible terrorist 

threats to tourist areas. 

Bursa is Turkey’s fourth-largest city, 

an industrial hub directly south of Istanbul 

across the Marmara Sea. While not 

one of the country’s biggest tourist destinations, 

it draws some foreign visitors

Several Egyptians killed in clashes with smugglers in Libya 

CAIRO - Egypt’s Foreign Ministry says 

at least a dozen Egyptians have been killed 

in clashes with smugglers in central Libya. 

Spokesman Ahmed Abu-Zeid said in a statement 

Wednesday that 12 to 16 Egyptian illegal 

migrants were killed in clashes in the town of 

Beni Walid. 

He says Egyptian officials are communicating 

with Libyan authorities in the area to 

identify those who were killed and repatriate 

their bodies. 

Libya has become a major conduit for migration 

from Africa and the Middle East toward 

Europe as smugglers have exploited the 

country’s chaos. 

Militias have mostly ruled Libya since the 

2011 uprising that toppled Moammar Gadhafi.

Zika-proof uniforms complete 

with mosquito repellent it

the virus at this year’s games in Rio 

de Janeiro. 

Mosquito-repellent chemicals 

were added to the outfits, which all 

include long pants, long-sleeved 

shirts and jackets. Athletes will 

wear the uniforms during ceremonies, 

training and at the athletes’ 

village, the Korean Olympic Committee 

said. 

The committee said it couldn’t 

make changes to the uniforms 

worn during competition because 

of strict rules and performance 

concerns, although athletes will be 

allowed to use anti-mosquito spray 

during competition 

Dawnalee Loney and junior 

Tiffanny James look to be 

the likely candidates for the 

4x400m team. 

On the male side, national 

400m record holder Rusheen 

McDonald, as well as Javon 

Francis and Julian Forte are 

expected to lead the 4x400m 

and 4x100m teams that will 

seek to atone after failing to 

win any of their events last 

year. 

Nathon Allen and Ricardo 

Chambers should join 

McDonald and Francis, 

while Oshane Bailey, Jermaine

Olympics changes uniforms to 

protect athletes from Zika virus 

The threat of Zika has emerged 

as a major concern in the buildup 

to this year’s Olympics along with 

construction delays and the political 

turmoil in Brazil. 

A team of South Korean government 

and Olympic officials 

visited Rio de Janeiro earlier this 

month to inspect Olympic venues 

and local hospitals 

The Korean Olympic Committee 

said it expects to soon provide 

guidelines to Olympic athletes 

and others travelling to the games 

about how to protect themselves 

from Zika. 

The U.S. team also revealed 

its Ralph Lauren-designed closing-ceremony 

outfits Wednesday, 

and the Americans don’t seem as 

worried. The men and women will

Gujarat Lions survive Morris 82* 

DELHI - It was IPL in a 

nutshell. A big name - Brendon 

McCullum - bossed the 

start, so much that Gujarat 

Lions recorded the fastest 

hundred of the season. A 

helpless collapse then killed 

the prospect of a one-sided 

game and Delhi Daredevils 

would have fancied chasing 

173 with dew gathering at 

Feroz Shah Kotla. However, 

they slipped to 16 for 3 and 

the home fans despaired. 

The game, though, wasn’t 

done playing with everyone’s 

emotions. 

Out walked the million-dollar 

man Chris Morris 

with 116 needed off 56, and 

walloped the third fastest 

fifty in the IPL, off 17 balls. 

When the match ended, he 

was unbeaten on 82 off 32, 

but there was no smile on 

his face. It was stolen by 

Praveen Kumar and Dwayne 

Bravo, who gave away only 

16 off the final two overs to 

pull off a one-run win for Lions. 

Morris had come in at 

No. 6 and launched his second 

ball into the second tier 

of the stands behind longoff. 

Very few of his eight 

sixes and four fours were 

mistimed, but a lot of them 

came as a result of his being 

able to get under the ball. 

Praveen prevented that in 

the penultimate over of the 

chase, conceding only four 

to leave Daredevils needing 

14 off six balls. Bravo, 

bowling from around the 

stumps, then hit the blockhole 

repeatedly to deny 

Morris’ sublime innings the 

status of match-winning. 

Suresh Raina gave his 

frontline spinners - Ravindra 

Jadeja and Pravin Tambe - 

only one over each and they 

cost a combined 31 runs. 

Bowling with the wet ball, 

they stood very little chance 

against Morris, armed with a 

crowd that was bellowing his 

name. His reach was handy, 

his balance at the crease was 

pristine and his clarity of 

thought handling a required 

rate that was above 12 was 

downright chilling. 

Morris’ first two sixes 

dragged the equation down 

from 101 off 48 to 85 off 42. 

Two against Tambe in the 

15 th over brought it to 57 off 

30. A hat-trick of them in the 

17 th over bowled by Dwayne 

Smith sealed his fifty and 

left Daredevils needing 29 

off 18. 

But JP Duminy, who had 

begun Daredevils’ revival, 

was undone by a Bravo 

slower ball for 48 which 

provided just enough of an 

opening for Lions to sneak 

through. 

Their victory had almost 

seemed a formality when 

McCullum smashed Lions’ 

fastest fifty, and Smith 

usurped him a few minutes 

later. Along the way Lions 

had reached 100 for 0 in a 

mere nine overs. 

This batting line-up had 

beaten perhaps the best one 

in the IPL on Sunday, when 

a Virat Kohli century had

not been enough. Daredevils 

were looking at a target of 

220, as a best-case scenario. 

But Morris did what Royal 

Challengers Bangalore’s 

bowlers couldn’t; he had 

set plans and executed them 

very well. He dismissed Mc- 

Cullum and Raina in the 12 th 

over; Lions were short-circuited 

and could only manage 

55 runs in the remaining 

48 balls. 

Morris knew McCullum 

thrived on fast bowling, so 

he produced an offcutter that 

dipped under the bat swing 

and broke the stumps. He 

targeted Raina’s body and 

had leg gully in place to 

take the catch. That gave the 

Daredevils spinners some 

freedom. 

Imran Tahir added to 

his reputation of being one 

of the best bowlers in T20 

cricket with a spell of 3 for 

24, the hallmark of which 

was his ability to vary the 

pace and time the googlies 

and flippers that surprised 

the batsmen. Where his 

slow-bowling partners Amit 

Mishra and Shahbaz Nadeem 

bowled flat in the 

hopes of containing the batsmen, 

Tahir backed his skill 

to confound them. He had 

Smith lbw with a ball that 

skidded through off the pitch 

and removed Ishan Kishan 

and Dinesh Karthik off successive 

balls in the 17 th over. 

Much like Tahir, Dhawal 

Kulkarni relied on his 

strength - swing - to topple 

Sanju Samson, an in-form 

Quinton de Kock and Karun 

Nair to lift Lions in the chase 

but his 3 for 19 wouldn’t 

have mattered much until 

his new-ball partner Praveen 

bowled an excellent final 

over to strangle Morris and 

finish with 4-0-13-0.
