18 c a r i b b e a n t i m e s . a g Thursday 28th April 2016 Youth female basketball squad in training By Carlena Knight A 21-member female basketball squad has been in training in preparation for the Caribbean Basketball Confederation Youth Championships which will be held at the Cliff Anderson Sports hall in Guyana from July 2 nd - July 9 th . The event will have 8 female teams from around the Caribbean with the top three teams advancing to the 2017 Centrobasket Under 17 Championships. The training squad is coached by Cedric ‘Supa’ David and assisted by Carol By Vanroy Burnes Harney Motors Mahico leads the point standings in the ACB, Parish League, Sir Curtly Ambrose Limited overs competition with 32 points. They are closely followed by Roberts Industry Ltd Piggott’s Crushers with 24 points. Stingray City/ Nature tours Seaton’s and National Parks St. Paul’s both are on By Carlena Knight The Antigua Barbuda Basketball Association is set to host a Family Fun day On May 22 nd at the JSC Sports complex at 2pm. The event will feature a bounce castle and horseback riding for the children and a Cornelius with the manager being Oleno Knight. The squad comprises of: Karel Knight Britnay Gore Timna Phillip MaryJane Grant Athalia Ralph Laumeca Charles Kahtalia Valentine Nzola Pryce Harmony Edwards Marsha Joseph 20 points each, Diamonds International Police are on 16 points each, while Urlings and John Hughes are both on 8 points each. Freetown is the only team yet to come off the mark. In the meantime, after all the matches were postponed last weekend, play will resumed this weekend April 30 th and May 01 st . Roberts Industry Ltd ABBA to host Family Fun Day 3x3 basketball game (legends vs celebrities vs mas troupes) for the basketball lovers. Admission is $20 with a complementary food. Drinks will be on sale. Funds are in aid of basketball development. Thursday 28th April 2016 c a r i b b e a n t i m e s . a g 19 Fraser-Pryce heads Jamaica’s team to Penn KINGSTON - World and Olympic champion Shelly- Ann Fraser-Pryce and two members of the World Championships women’s 4x400m relay team have been named in a 22-member team by the JAAA to compete in the USA vs. The World relays at this weekend’s 122nd staging of the Penn Relays in Philadelphia. The Jamaican women won two of three relays last year, retaining the 4x100m and winning the 4x400m, while coming up just short in the 4x200m. Elaine Thompson, the World Championships outdoor 200m silver medallist and World Indoor 60m bronze medal winner, Olympic silver medallist Kerron Stewart and Audra Segree could join Fraser-Pryce on the 4x100m team. Christine Day and Stephenie Ann McPherson, members of the team that won the Mile Relay at the World Championships in Beijing, China, last year, as well as Verone Chambers, Atletico coach banned Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone has received a touchline ban for the final three La Liga games of the season. The Argentine, 45, appeared to instruct a ball boy to throw a ball on to the pitch to disrupt a Malaga attack during Atletico’s 1-0 win on Saturday. SEOUL - South Korea’s Olympic committee on Wednesday unveiled Zika-proof uniforms complete with mosquito repellent it says will help protect athletes from the virus at this year’s games in Rio de Janeiro. Mosquito-repellent chemicals were added to the outfits, which all include long pants, long-sleeved shirts and jackets. Athletes will wear the uniforms during ceremonies, training and at the athletes’ village, the Korean Olympic Committee said. The committee said it couldn’t make changes to the uniforms worn during competition because of strict rules and performance concerns, although athletes will be allowed to use anti-mosquito spray during competition Dawnalee Loney and junior Tiffanny James look to be the likely candidates for the 4x400m team. On the male side, national 400m record holder Rusheen McDonald, as well as Javon Francis and Julian Forte are expected to lead the 4x400m and 4x100m teams that will seek to atone after failing to win any of their events last year. Nathon Allen and Ricardo Chambers should join McDonald and Francis, while Oshane Bailey, Jermaine Hamilton and Dwight Jones will join Forte on the sprint team. The national teams will race on Saturday’s final day of the threeday carnival. (Jamaica Observer). Olympics changes uniforms to protect athletes from Zika virus The threat of Zika has emerged as a major concern in the buildup to this year’s Olympics along with construction delays and the political turmoil in Brazil. A team of South Korean government and Olympic officials visited Rio de Janeiro earlier this month to inspect Olympic venues and local hospitals The Korean Olympic Committee said it expects to soon provide guidelines to Olympic athletes and others travelling to the games about how to protect themselves from Zika. The U.S. team also revealed its Ralph Lauren-designed closing-ceremony outfits Wednesday, and the Americans don’t seem as worried. The men and women will wear shorts. (CBS News).
