Two new Zika cases confirmed in USVI
ST THOMAS - The US
Virgin Islands Department
of Health on Tuesday confirmed
one additional case
of the Zika virus on St Croix
and one in St Thomas.
The total confirmed Zika
cases are now 16; 14 of
which are on St Croix and
two on St. Thomas.
“Today’s report shows
that we must continue to
protect ourselves from
mosquito-borne illnesses,”
Commissioner Nominee, Dr
Michelle Davis stated in response
to the updated report.
“With Carnival, Jump
Up, Ironman Triathalon,
and so many other outdoor
events this week, it is important
to wear repellent and
PORT OF SPAIN - 80-year-old
woman in Trinidad and Tobago died
Tuesday night, just over 24 hours after
being hit by a policeman’s stray bullet
while in the bathroom of her home.
Sona Lalloo sustained the gunshot
wound on Monday night, when
the 21-year-old officer’s gun was discharged
as he chased two suspects near
her house.
The shooting occurred around 7:45
that night, as members of the South
Western Division Task Force responded
to a report that a group of gunmen
were seen walking along the road in
Johnson Trace, Rancho Quemado in
the south of the twin-island republic.
When they arrived on the scene
they saw two men, one of whom was
protective clothing.”
This advice is especially
true for pregnant women, as
Zika can be passed to her
unborn baby and can cause
serious birth defects in babies
of women who had
Zika virus while pregnant.
The Department of
Health will also inspect the
homes of pregnant women
for mosquitoes and mosquito
larvae and provide
treatment, as needed in the
homes of those pregnant
women who receive testing.
Elderly woman accidentally
killed by police in Trinidad
holding an object that resembled a gun.
The men ran when they saw the police
approaching and the officer in question
attempted to climb over a chain-link
fence in his pursuit of one of the men.
According to police reports, the
fence collapsed and the officer fell and
as his gun, which was drawn, hit the
ground, it discharged two bullets. It
was subsequently discovered that one
of them went through the wall of Lalloo’s
bathroom and hit her in the head.
President of the Police Social Welfare
Association president, Inspector
Anand Ramesar, told the Trinidad
Guardian that the officer was shaken
up by the “most unfortunate” incident.
“From the information the association
has received, we are inclined to
Pregnant women are also
eligible to receive a free
Zika prevention kit from 14
healthcare clinics across the
US Virgin Islands.
The US Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention
recently delivered 750 kits
to St Croix, St John, and St
Thomas.
Each kit includes educational
materials in English
and Spanish, EPA-registered
insect repellent, permethrin
spray repellent for
treating clothing, condoms
to avoid sexual transmission
of zika, treatment tabs for
preventing mosquitoes from
breeding in standing water,
and a bed net. (Caribbean
believe that the circumstance of the officer
having operational possession of
his firearm was justifiable.
The circumstances of the firearm
being discharged was most unfortunate
and we are advised that the officer himself
is quite shaken up by the accident,”
he said. (Caribbean360).
